Book Psychological Determinants of Pro environmental Behavior

Download or read book Psychological Determinants of Pro environmental Behavior written by Aita Ammann and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2022-09-22 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2022 in the subject Psychology - Personality Psychology, grade: 1.0 (6.0 Schweiz), University of Zurich (Psychologisches Institut), language: English, abstract: This paper aims at providing a comprehensive overview of all the psychological constructs relevant for pro-environmental behavior by integrating the findings of existing literature on the topic. It is organized into three main categories, being personality, judgment and guiding principles for action. These categories were chosen to distinguish between the enduring dispositional traits and qualities a person brings to tackling a problem – being broad, general individual differences that manifest across situations and are relatively stable over time (personality traits), how they perceive, evaluate and judge the problem (individual differences in cognitive schemes) and ultimately what drives them to take action and what guides them towards what actions they take. Climate change is one of the greatest global challenges of our time and most of the damage done to the natural environment is a direct consequence of human behavior. Although large-scale actions in the form of governmental policies, international agreements and technological inventions are needed, part of the solution to the problem are significant changes in individual’s daily behaviors. Any behavior that aims at minimizing harm or benefitting the natural environment can be described as a pro- environmental behavior. Human behavior is very dynamic and influenced by a vast number of psychological and environmental factors, which makes it hard to understand and even harder to predict. Research on pro-environmental behavior has identified various psychological constructs as being related to pro-environmental behavior, such as problem awareness, personality traits, identity processes, personal and social norms, attitudes, intentions, behavioral control, values and there may be even more. However, primary studies typically only focus on a select few of the relevant psychological constructs and meta-analysis thus far have mainly focused on identifying the strengths of associations of different variables to pro-environmental behaviors. There is no existing framework that integrates all these variables and how they are connected into one comprehensive framework. A more holistic perspective on the individual and its behavior may thus provide a better understanding of what drives or impedes actions under what conditions.

Book Monitoring Simulation and Management of Visitor Landscapes

Download or read book Monitoring Simulation and Management of Visitor Landscapes written by Howard Randal Gimblett and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Conventional methods used in the planning and management of human-landscape interactions fall far short of the needs of today s land management professionals. Monitoring, Simulation, and Management of Visitor Landscapes presents a growing body of applied research that provides decision makers with tools to maintain the ecological integrity of public places by evaluating the impacts of humans in various landscapes across space and time." "This will help land managers and policy makers construct strategies for evaluating interactions between humans and the environment and expand the model of land management to include social and geographic, as well as environmental, factors."--Jacket.

Book Social Ecological Context of Restorative Environments

Download or read book Social Ecological Context of Restorative Environments written by James Aaron Hipp and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research investigates the influence of environmental change on psychological and physical health benefits of restorative environment visitation. Restorative environments, primarily natural environments, alleviate directed attention fatigue, assuage psychophysiological stress, and provide environments for passive and exercise activities. This study aims to fill the knowledge gap regarding influences of environmental gradients on the nature experience and health outcomes relationship. This is an opportune time to address this gap due to climate change vulnerabilities and the WHO's study revealing neuropsychiatric diseases the number one burden of disease. The objectives of the study were: (1) survey visitors at coastal parks where there are current, measurable environmental gradients; (2) elucidate the relationship between perceived restorativeness of coastal environments and gradients in environmental health and (3) elucidate the relationship between activity choices and gradients in environmental parameters; (4) determine whether participants would alter their visitation behaviors given a set of hypothetical weather and environmental conditions; and (5) determine if visitor abundance within coastal parks significantly affects experience. Visitors (n = 1,153) to three California State Beaches were surveyed on 75 dates in 2008. Participants completed a questionnaire on (1) park visitation, (2) perceived weather, environmental quality, and crowd, (3) stress and perceived restorativeness, and (4) demographic characteristics. Visitors perceived a greater psychological restorativeness when temperatures were at/below monthly maximum temperatures, mean sea level was below average, and air quality was rated 'Good' (compared to 'Moderate' or worse). Visitors' environmental quality perceptions were positively correlated with perceived restorativeness. When presented with warmer temperatures scenarios, those visiting on days with temperatures above average were significantly more likely to select 'Visit for a shorter time' and/or 'Definitely not visit'. Given results, projected global climate change will constrain the psychological health benefits associated with beach visitation. Activity participation, conversely, increased as ambient temperature rose above monthly average. Lastly, visitors significantly preferred less crowded beaches. Overall, the results advance the understanding of how environmental quality contributes to human - environment experience and explicates the need for further research to ascertain thresholds within parametric environmental gradients beyond which public participation in psychologically restorative activities is significantly impaired.

Book Occupational Therapy Practice Framework Domain and Process

Download or read book Occupational Therapy Practice Framework Domain and Process written by Aota and published by AOTA Press. This book was released on 2014 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As occupational therapy celebrates its centennial in 2017, attention returns to the profession's founding belief in the value of therapeutic occupations as a way to remediate illness and maintain health. The founders emphasized the importance of establishing a therapeutic relationship with each client and designing an intervention plan based on the knowledge about a client's context and environment, values, goals, and needs. Using today's lexicon, the profession's founders proposed a vision for the profession that was occupation based, client centered, and evidence based--the vision articulated in the third edition of the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework: Domain and Process. The Framework is a must-have official document from the American Occupational Therapy Association. Intended for occupational therapy practitioners and students, other health care professionals, educators, researchers, payers, and consumers, the Framework summarizes the interrelated constructs that describe occupational therapy practice. In addition to the creation of a new preface to set the tone for the work, this new edition includes the following highlights: a redefinition of the overarching statement describing occupational therapy's domain; a new definition of clients that includes persons, groups, and populations; further delineation of the profession's relationship to organizations; inclusion of activity demands as part of the process; and even more up-to-date analysis and guidance for today's occupational therapy practitioners. Achieving health, well-being, and participation in life through engagement in occupation is the overarching statement that describes the domain and process of occupational therapy in the fullest sense. The Framework can provide the structure and guidance that practitioners can use to meet this important goal.

Book Measuring Connection to Nature and Exploring Connections to Childhood Activities Environmental Concern and Behavior

Download or read book Measuring Connection to Nature and Exploring Connections to Childhood Activities Environmental Concern and Behavior written by Jed Brensinger and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The human-nature relationship is a topic of increasing interest among the fields of psychology, environment and natural resources, landscape architecture, conservation biology, and parks and recreation studies. These fields, each with their preferred conceptions of the topic and methods of inquiry and investigation have produced a body of literature as diverse as the fields themselves. As a result, there remains confusion over exactly what the human-nature relationship entails, how to quantify it, and the best method for measuring it. Other research has found many of these scales to be highly correlated, an indicator that they are likely measuring the same concept, but the characterization of connection to nature given with each of these scales can differ significantly. Scales can be characterized as cognitive, affective, or experiential, or some combination of the three. Of current interest is developing both a better definition of connection to nature as well as appropriate and valid measurement tools. The studies presented here make comparisons between three measures of connection to nature, the Implicit Association with Nature Test, the Inclusion of Nature in Self, and the Connectedness to Nature Scale. In examining both the demographic variables that impact connection to nature as well as the explanatory power of these measures, this work attempts to situate these measures within the larger fields of research concerned with interactions between humans and nature. This work brings together measures of connection to nature, environmental concern, environmental behaviors, and outdoor recreational experiences to better understand the relationships between each of them. These studies made use of survey data which was collected online from 199 undergraduate university students. Chapter 2 analyzes the data via multiple comparisons between groups based on college major, gender, childhood community, and political ideology. The comparisons are made in reference to three measures of connection to nature and environmental concern and behaviors. Chapter 3 further builds upon the findings of Chapter 2 and other literature in using multiple regression models to explain the variance in levels of connection to nature, environmental concerns, and environmental behaviors. The results of these studies indicate that there are significant differences on measures of connection to nature based on college major and political ideology, but not as a result of gender or childhood community. Measures of connection to nature were found to be significant in explaining levels of environmental concern and environmental behaviors. These results provide a starting place for developing recommendations for future research to explore at a more in-depth level those variables that can explain increased levels of connection to nature and the role that the concept may play in the development of environmental concern and behaviors.
