Book Flexible Automation in Developing Countries

Download or read book Flexible Automation in Developing Countries written by Ludovico Alcorta and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the extent of, and motives for, the diffusion of flexible automation (FA) at global level and then turns to the local and firm level, bringing together in-depth studies of sixty-two firms in Brazil, India, Mexico, Thailand, Turkey and Venezuela. Research focuses on the impact of computer-numerically-controlled machine tools on scale and scope by exploring changes in lot sizes and product variety (product scale and scope), total plant output (plant scale) and total firm output (firm scale). Barriers to setting up FA-based operations are discussed, as are factors which may affect a decision to locate in a developing country. The contributed studies reveal a relatively slow diffusion of FA in developing countries and it is demonstrated that while FA possibly increases scope, it also requires that plant output be increased in order to maintain efficiency. Alcorta concludes that the location in developing countries will probably only be viable for large domestic firms, multinationals seeking to relocate simple but labour intensive assembly processes and firms in countries with significant domestic markets. This work is unique in addressing the scale and scope issues in developing countries and in the wealth of information regarding machine tools which it provides. The data provided in the appendix includes official United Nations data, previously unpublished. This will be of use for all research into trends in the use of machine tools.

Book Economic Integration in NAFTA and the EU

Download or read book Economic Integration in NAFTA and the EU written by Kirsten Appendini and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-20 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The institutions of the EU and NAFTA are critically analysed by leading American and European scholars. The book covers both the general problems of building new and integrated markets, and several policy areas that are related to economic integration. The institutions established in both Europe and America are seen as deficient in several respects. Without offering adequate replacements, the economic integration projects are actually undermining some of the core institutions that serve the needs of the market economies - institutions on which the integration process itself depends.

Book The State and Globalization

Download or read book The State and Globalization written by Martin Upchurch and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-22 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of country studies explores changing relationships between the state, employers and labour in an increasingly internationalized world economy. It covers ten countries and examines the tensions and contradictions caused by neo-liberal market agendas. The authors express concern at the potentially ravaging effects of market deregulation on organized labour and present a critical account of state efforts to emulate desired models of national economic development. While the central core of the book concerns itself with changing labour relations, this is placed within the wider context of state and employer strategy, and covers issues such as labour market segmentation, welfare and taxation regimes and varying approaches to corporatism.
