Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The City at Stake tells the dramatic story of how the nation's second-largest city completed a major reform of its government in the face of a deeply threatening movement for secession by the San Fernando Valley. How did Los Angeles, a diverse city with an image of unstructured politics and fragmented government, find a way to unify itself around a controversial set of reforms? Los Angeles government nearly collapsed in political bickering over charter reform, which generated the remarkable phenomenon of two competing charter reform commissions. Out of this nearly impossible tangle, reformers managed to knit a new city charter that greatly expanded institutions for citizen participation and addressed long-standing weaknesses in the role of the mayor. The new charter, pursued by a Republican mayor, won its greatest support from liberal whites who had long favored reform measures. Written by an urban scholar who played a key role in the charter reform process, the book offers both a theoretical perspective on the process of institutional reform in an age of diversity, and a firsthand, inside-the-box look at how major reform works. The new afterword by the author analyzes the 2005 election of Los Angeles's first modern Latino mayor, Antonio Villaraigosa, a milestone in the development of urban reform coalitions in an age of immigration and ethnic diversity.

You'll learn about: • Collection and steering—condensing your horse's frame and getting his feet to follow his nose • Lead departures, circles, and spins—preparing for the lope, "hunting the circle," and driving into the spin • Stops, back-ups, and rollbacks—perfecting the slide, moving backward with cadence, and swinging around 180 degrees over the hocks • Lead changes—getting it right and preventing anticipation

Book In Search of Running Rein

Download or read book In Search of Running Rein written by Tony Byles and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2011-04-07 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Epsom Derby, established back in 1780 for three-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies, is today considered to be the most prestigious of the five Classics of the racing calendar, but there was nothing noble about the notorious Derby held in 1844. Marred by horse switching allegations, false age declarations, devious ownership transferrals and nobbling, it was set to become the most scandalous event in the history of the Turf. Drawing on a wide range of publications, newspaper articles, Jockey Club inquiry documentation and court evidence records, this book traces the web of deceit surrounding the original but subsequently disqualified 1844 Derby winner, Running Rein, and the audacious plan orchestrated by a certain Abraham Levi Goodman to ensure, by any underhand means at his disposal, that the Derby victory would be his, not for the glory of winning but as a monstrous betting coup. Twists and turns abound in the claims, counter-claims and conflicting witness statements when the case goes to trial, as attempts are made to determine the age and identity of the horse purported to be Running Rein, and this intriguing story provides a fascinating insight into the world of horse racing and betting, where the stakes are high and the unscrupulous are prepared to do anything to protect their own interests, with little regard for the impact of their actions on the reputation of the sport.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Those in recovery learn to “rein in their brain,” ending compulsive behaviors while fostering a more thoughtful lifestyle that ensures long term emotional sobriety. Addiction—whether to mood-altering substances, gambling, sex, or food— stems in part from an over-reliance on the reward system of a primitive part of the brain that can push us to make poor choices based on an expectation of immediate gratification. Those of us in recovery often struggle with the compulsive thoughts and behaviors that are still programmed in our addictive brains well after the drinking and drugging has stopped. These often play out thoughtlessly in our interactions with others, damaging our relationships and growth as balanced human beings. Rein in Your Brain, by addiction expert Cynthia Moreno Tuohy, offers ten tools for breaking the cycle of impulsivity. These time-tested self-interventions include standing still in the moment, giving up control, not assuming the other person’s intent, tolerating differences, accepting emotions without giving them free reign, and differentiating between immediate fear-driven reactions and measured thoughts. By incorporating these tools in your daily interactions, your relationships can move from those of conflict to mutual respect and understanding.

Book FORTY MINUTES TO BATON ROUGE The Story of Robert Bo Rein

Download or read book FORTY MINUTES TO BATON ROUGE The Story of Robert Bo Rein written by A. Zach Williams and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-08-03 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FORTY MINUTES TO BATON ROUGE examines the life and tragic death of LSU head football coach Robert "Bo" Rein at age 34. The fact that Rein never actually coached a day at LSU muddies the emotional waters and creates an unfortunate chasm between those who knew him and those who never got the chance. Sadly, after only 42 days at the helm, the evening of January 10, 1980 took a tragic and unfathomable turn. While returning to Baton Rouge from a Shreveport recruiting trip, Rein and his pilot Lewis S. Benscotter turned a 40 minute junket into a three hour 1,000 mile odyssey, that 40 years later still has us scratching our heads. Rein's twin engine Cessna 441 would plunge 40,000 feet into the Atlantic Ocean 100 miles off Cape Charles, VA. For LSU, the sadness resembled a new friend they had just met and abruptly lost. For NC State, the loss was devastation and utter disbelief. And for Ohioans...they had lost a beloved son.

Book Free Rein to Kill

Download or read book Free Rein to Kill written by Madeline Kisha and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005-06 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Free Rein to Kill chronicles the heart-wrenching true story of an elderly patient who was admitted to the hospital with an impacted bowel and involuntarily euthanized after being incorrectly diagnosed with end-stage cancer. Coauthors Maddie Kisha and Paula Andrasko allege that the Florida doctors caring for their father, Paul Joseph Vertucci, Sr., neglected his impacted bowel and inaccurately diagnosed end-stage cancer, claiming that the disease had metastasized and was therefore incurable. Released with in-home hospice care, his daughters' determination and love were not enough to save him-Vertucci eventually died from morphine-related complications. Kisha and Andrasko contend that their father was involuntarily euthanized due to the ramifications of the Florida Wrongful Death Act-alleging that the state legislation gives doctors, hospitals and insurance companies free rein to kill. The authors bring the controversial subject of euthanasia to the forefront as they recount the rich and loving relationship they shared with their beloved father.
