Book Concrete Structures Subjected to Impact and Blast Loadings and Their Combinations

Download or read book Concrete Structures Subjected to Impact and Blast Loadings and Their Combinations written by Chunwei Zhang and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-05-08 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although much research focuses on investigating the responses of reinforced concrete (RC) structures under sole impact or blast loads, the responses of RC structures under a combination of impact and blast loads currently represent a gap in our knowledge. The combined actions of impact and blast loadings may be applied to RC structures during accidental or intentional collision of vessels, vehicles, etc., carrying explosive materials. A comprehensive study on the vulnerability of various structural members is carried out using finite element (FE) simulations under combination of impact and blast loads with the variations of various loading- and structural-related parameters and key parameters. This book introduces various structural analysis approaches for concrete structures when subjected to extreme loads such as impact and blast loadings. The theory of the combinations of impact and blast loads is proposed that can provide primary insights to the specific readers to develop new ideas in impact and blast engineering, including combined actions of extreme loads arising from real-world intentional or accidental events. This book will be of value to students (undergraduate or postgraduate), engineers, and researchers in structural and civil engineering, and specifically, those who are studying and investigating the performances of concrete structures under extreme loads.

Book Reinforced Concrete Slabs Under Impact Loading

Download or read book Reinforced Concrete Slabs Under Impact Loading written by Faham Tahmasebinia and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-04 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many older structures were designed for static loads but more recently there has been a growing awareness that some must be designed to resist both dynamic impact and static loads. An accidental impact load can be caused by mishaps in industry as well as accidents stemming from transportation or man-made disasters. Structural components can be subjected to a range of deliberate impact loads such as military activity or terrorist attacks. A large proportion of the surfaces of concrete structures are covered by reinforced concrete slabs. Slabs are often slender elements, which means they are vulnerable to flexural, shear, or a combination of both modes of failure when subjected to impact loading. There are a number of ways of predicting how an impact load will affect a concrete slab, some of which may be impractical or expensive but because there have been significant developments in technology, numerical techniques rather than experimental approaches have become popular methods for developing detailed responses.

Book Behaviour and Modelling of Reinforced Concrete Structures Subjected to Impact Loads

Download or read book Behaviour and Modelling of Reinforced Concrete Structures Subjected to Impact Loads written by Selcuk Saatci and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis and design of reinforced concrete (RC) structures against extreme loads, such as earthquakes, blasts, and impacts, has been an objective of many researchers and designers. As a result of recently elevated terror threat levels in the world, demand for the impact resistant design of buildings has increased. Numerous studies have been conducted to-date toward understanding and developing methodologies predicting the behaviour of RC structures under impact loads. However, the lack of a complete understanding of shear behaviour under high dynamic conditions hindered the efforts for accurate prediction of impact behaviour, since severe shear mechanisms may dominate the behaviour of RC structures when subjected to impact loads. This current study aimed to apply one of the more successful methods of static reinforced concrete shear analysis, the Modified Compression Field Theory (MCFT), to the analysis of dynamic loads, and thus, develop an efficient and reliable tool for impact analysis of RC structures. A two-dimensional nonlinear finite element analysis program for reinforced concrete, VecTor2, developed previously at the University of Toronto for static loads, was modified to include the consideration of dynamic loads, including impacts. VecTor2 uses the MCFT for its computational methodology, along with a wide array of material and behavioural models for reinforced concrete. To verify the performance of VecTor2 and its computational methodology under impact loads, an experimental program was also undertaken to provide data for corroboration. Eight reinforced concrete beam specimens, four pairs, were tested under free falling drop-weights, impacting the specimens at the mid-span. All specimens had identical longitudinal reinforcement, but varying shear reinforcement ratio, intended to investigate the effects of shear capacity on the impact behaviour. A total of 20 tests were conducted, including multiple tests on each specimen. The test results showed that the shear characteristics of the specimens played an important role in their overall behaviour. All specimens, regardless of their shear capacity, developed severe diagonal shear cracks, forming a shear-plug under the impact point. The VecTor2 analyses of the test specimens were satisfactory in predicting damage levels, and maximum and residual displacements. The methodology employed by VecTor2, based on the MCFT, proved to be successful in predicting the shear-dominant behaviour of the specimens under impact.

Book Strengthening of Reinforced Concrete Structures

Download or read book Strengthening of Reinforced Concrete Structures written by L C Hollaway and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1999-03-05 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The in situ rehabilitation or upgrading of reinforced concrete members using bonded steel plates is an effective, convenient and economic method of improving structural performance. However, disadvantages inherent in the use of steel have stimulated research into the possibility of using fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) materials in its place, providing a non-corrosive, more versatile strengthening system. This book presents a detailed study of the flexural strengthening of reinforced and prestressed concrete members using fibre reinforces polymer composite plates. It is based to a large extent on material developed or provided by the consortium which studied the technology of plate bonding to upgrade structural units using carbon fibre / polymer composite materials. The research and trial tests were undertaken as part of the ROBUST project, one of several ventures in the UK Government's DTI-LINK Structural Composites Programme. The book has been designed for practising structural and civil engineers seeking to understand the principles and design technology of plate bonding, and for final year undergraduate and postgraduate engineers studying the principles of highway and bridge engineering and structural engineering. Detailed study of the flexural strengthening of reinforced and prestressed concrete members using fibre reinforced polymer composites Contains in-depth case histories

Book Structures Under Shock and Impact XII

Download or read book Structures Under Shock and Impact XII written by G. Schleyer and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of interest to engineers from civil, military, nuclear, offshore, aeronautical, transportation and other backgrounds, this book contains the proceedings of a well-established conference on the subject that was first held in 1989. Topics covered include: Impact and Blast Loading Characteristics; Protection of Structures from Blast Loads; Energy Absorbing Issues; Structural Crashworthiness; Hazard Mitigation and Assessment; Behaviour of Steel Structures; Behaviour of Structural Concrete; Material Response to High Rate Loading; Seismic Engineering Applications; Interaction Between Computational and Experimental Results; Innovative Materials and Material Systems; Fluid Structure Interaction. The shock and impact behaviour of structures presents challenges to researchers not only because it has obvious time-dependent aspects, but also because it is difficult to specify the external dynamic loading characteristics and to obtain the full dynamic properties of materials. It is crucial that we find ways to share the contributions and understanding that are developing from various theoretical, numerical and experimental studies, as well as investigations into material properties under dynamic loading conditions. This book helps to meet that need.

Book Reinforced Concrete Structures under Cyclic Loading

Download or read book Reinforced Concrete Structures under Cyclic Loading written by Farhad Aslani and published by Trans Tech Publications Ltd. This book was released on 2015-03-14 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental programs in laboratories give real results to identify nonlinear behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) structures but they are limited to knowledge of particular cases under restricted structural dimensions, sizes, shapes, loading and boundary conditions but the computational simulation approach has no limit to its application. Constitutive models are developed to simulate the dynamic nonlinear response of concrete and steel reinforcement subjected to cyclic loading varying randomly in magnitude. The behavior of structural concrete under monotonic loading is affected by important material aspects including cracking, crushing, tension stiffening, compression softening and bond slip. Reversed cyclic loading introduces further complexities such as stiffness degradation in concrete and the Bauschinger effect in reinforcing steel. In this research the validity and reliability of some proposed constitutive models for concrete considering general loading i.e. cyclic, monotonic, partial, common point and transition loading are evaluated. Amongst many existing constitutive models, because of their simplicity and common usage in the finite element analysis of RC structures, only some common proposed models based on nonlinear elasticity-based approach are investigated. These models are verified against experimental data available in the literature and the results are discussed. In this study, also, a hysteretic stress–strain model is developed for unconfined concrete with the intention of providing efficient modeling for the structural behavior of concrete in seismic regions. The proposed model is based on the findings of previous experimental and analytical studies. The model for concrete subjected to monotonic and cyclic loading, comprises four components in compression and tension; an envelope curve (for monotonic and cyclic loading), an unloading curve, a reloading curve, and transition curve. Also presented are formulations for partial unloading and partial reloading curves. The proposed Constitutive model reliability is investigated by RC members non-linear finite element analysis (FEM) using by finite element software ABAQUS. Comparisons with test results showed that the proposed model provides a good fit to a wide range of experimentally established hysteresis loops.
