Il termine "Metempsicosi" è spesso impiegato nello stesso senso, la definizione di quest'ultimo termine è "Il passaggio dell'anima, come essenza immortale, alla morte del corpo, in un altro corpo vivente". A volte viene impiegato il termine "Trasmigrazione delle anime", termine usato nel senso di "passaggio da un corpo a un altro". Ma il termine "Trasmigrazione" è spesso usato in connessione con la convinzione di alcune razze sottosviluppate che sostenevano che l'anima degli uomini a volte passasse nei corpi degli animali inferiori, come punizione per i loro peccati commessi durante la vita umana. Ma questa credenza è tenuta in discredito dagli aderenti alla Reincarnazione o alla Metempsicosi, e non ha alcun collegamento con la loro filosofia o convinzioni, poiché le idee sono scaturite da una fonte completamente diversa e non hanno nulla in comune. Ci sono molte forme di credenza - molti gradi di dottrina - riguardo alla Reincarnazione, come vedremo mentre procediamo, ma c'è un principio fondamentale alla base di tutte le varie sfumature di opinione e divisioni delle scuole. Questa convinzione fondamentale può essere espressa come la dottrina che esiste nell'uomo un qualcosa di immateriale (chiamato anima, spirito, sé interiore o molti altri nomi) che non perisce alla morte o alla disintegrazione del corpo, ma che persiste come un'entità, e dopo un intervallo di riposo, più o meno breve, si reincarna. In relazione a ciò, la concezione del Karma si rifiuta di usare i termini "ricompensa e punizione", o anche di intrattenere quelle idee, ma invece vede in ogni cosa l'elaborazione di un grande Piano Cosmico in base al quale tutto sale dal basso verso alto, e ancora più in alto. Il Karma non è che una fase della grande Legge operante in tutti i piani e le forme della Vita e dell'Universo. Per esso l'idea che "L'Universo è governato dalla Legge" è un assioma. E poiché in esso la Giustizia è anche implicita, non vede sanzioni e ricompense - meriti e demeriti - ma solo la prova di quella Giustizia Ultima; lo cerca e lo trova nella concezione e nella realizzazione che Tutto funziona per il Bene. Tutto tende verso l'alto - che tutto è giustificato e giusto, perché il fine è il Bene Assoluto, e che ogni minuscolo lavoro del grande macchinario cosmico sta volgendo nella giusta direzione e a tal fine. Di conseguenza, ognuno di noi è esattamente dove dovrebbe essere in questo momento - e la nostra condizione è esattamente la migliore per condurci a quel Compimento e Scopo Divino. E per tali pensatori, infatti, non c'è Diavolo se non Paura e Infedeltà, e tutti gli altri diavoli sono illusioni, siano essi chiamati Belzebù, Mente Mortale o Karma, se producono Paura e Infedeltà nel Bene. E tali pensatori ritengono che il modo per vivere secondo la Luce Superiore, e senza paura di un Karma Malevolo, è sentire la propria relazione con il Bene Universale, e poi "Vivere un giorno alla volta, facendo il meglio. Essere gentili nella Vita - e soprattutto che non c'è nulla di cui avere paura - e che tutto è bene con Dio, con l'Universo, e con te!

The term "Metempsychosis" is frequently employed in the same sense, the definition of the latter term being: "The passage of the soul, as an immortal essence, at the death of the body, into another living body." The term "Transmigration of Souls" is sometimes employed, the term being used in the sense of "passing from one body into another." But the term "Transmigration" is often used in connection with the belief of certain undeveloped races who held that the soul of men sometimes passed into the bodies of the lower animals, as a punishment for their sins committed during the human life. But this belief is held in disrepute by the adherents of Reincarnation or Metempsychosis, and has no connection with their philosophy or beliefs, the ideas having sprung from an entirely different source, and having nothing in common. There are many forms of belief--many degrees of doctrine--regarding Reincarnation, as we shall see as we proceed, but there is a fundamental and basic principle underlying all of the various shades of opinion, and divisions of the schools. This fundamental belief may be expressed as the doctrine that there is in man an immaterial Something (called the soul, spirit, inner self, or many other names) which does not perish at the death or disintegration of the body, but which persists as an entity, and after a shorter or longer interval of rest reincarnates, or is re-born, into a new body--that of an unborn infant--from whence it proceeds to live a new life in the body, more or less unconscious of its past existences, but containing within itself the "essence" or results of its past lives, which experiences go to make up its new "character," or "personality." It is usually held that the rebirth is governed by the law of attraction, under one name or another, and which law operates in accordance with strict justice, in the direction of attracting the reincarnating soul to a body, and conditions, in accordance with the tendencies of the past life, the parents also attracting to them a soul bound to them by some ties in the past, the law being universal, uniform, and equitable to all concerned in the matter. This is a general statement of the doctrine as it is generally held by the most intelligent of its adherents.
