Book Water Management A View from Multidisciplinary Perspectives

Download or read book Water Management A View from Multidisciplinary Perspectives written by G. M. Tarekul Islam and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-03-25 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together a selection of best papers from The International Conference on Water and Flood Management, Bangladesh, 2021. The book chapters are based on contributions from multidisciplinary fields, such as nature-based solutions, hydro-meteorological forecasting, river restoration, coastal risk, episodic natural hazards, water risk and resilience, climate-resilient infrastructure, blue economy, and water management during the COVID-19 pandemic. With changing physical and socioeconomic risks due to changes in climate and anthropogenic interventions, integrated approaches to analyzing these processes and their interactions, along with integrating nature-based solutions, are gaining traction. With this special focus on science, policy, and practice to ensure sustainability in the water sector, the conference provided a platform for researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to exchange their knowledge and experience.

Book Governance issues for sustainable management of village irrigation in the Dry Zone of Sri Lanka

Download or read book Governance issues for sustainable management of village irrigation in the Dry Zone of Sri Lanka written by Imbulana, Upali and published by IWMI. This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Village irrigation systems (ViSs) are vital in rural livelihood, food, and water security. VISs include small (minor) tanks and diversions (anicuts). The hydrologically linked tanks with natural drainage patterns form cascades, and beyond food and water security, they play a significant role in mitigating flood and drought impacts on communities in river basins. With anthropogenic changes, many cascades are in depilated states now. This paper finds that policy support with legal recognition to cascade-based community-level institutions promote bottom-up water and natural resources management approaches. They also facilitate investigations of ill-defined subject areas in cascade management and complex socio-political and economic issues and challenges constraining sustainable cascade based VISs operations.

Book Predicting Water Availability in Irrigation Tank Cascade Systems

Download or read book Predicting Water Availability in Irrigation Tank Cascade Systems written by C. J. Jayatilaka and published by IWMI. This book was released on 2001 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Better water management in irrigation tank cascade systems is vital in achieving higher productive use of available water. To develop and implement management practices aimed at improving effective use of water, studies leading to the development of models that can predict available tank water in irrigation tank cascade systems are invaluable. This report presents a simple water balance model, Cascade, developed to predict tank water availability in the Thirappane tank cascade system in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. The report includes calibration of the model and its application to predict tank water availability for rice crops over a 10-year period.

Book Proceedings of International Conference on Remote Sensing for Disaster Management

Download or read book Proceedings of International Conference on Remote Sensing for Disaster Management written by Peddada Jagadeeswara Rao and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-23 with total page 851 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The natural disasters are the killer agents which can/can't be predicted even though we have modern technology. Every year, in one place or another, disasters striking which is devastating the area and surroundings, leading to ecological disruption besides huge loss of life and property. India is vulnerable to cyclones, landslides/avalanches, earthquakes, floods, droughts, forest fires, epidemics, etc. The 5700-km long coast of India, with its dense population is vulnerable to cyclones/low depressions, tsunamis, etc. The 2400-km long rugged Himalayan terrain is vulnerable to landslides, avalanches and earthquakes. India is not only vulnerable to natural disasters, it is also experiencing industrial accidents. The Bhopal Gas tragedy is one of the major man-made disasters in the world. The state of Andhra Pradesh has 970-km long coastline with two major rivers, etc. The conference is conducted in Visakhapatnam, is famous for industries and tourism. Recently, several industrial accidents took place, besides major natural disasters like Hud-Hud, etc. Disaster management shall be implemented from the grass root level in vulnerable areas to improve the capacity building, so as to minimize the losses. The capacity building coupled with technology results in reduction of loss of life and property.
