Book Economics of Carbon Sequestration in Forestry

Download or read book Economics of Carbon Sequestration in Forestry written by Terry J. Logan and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1997-12-29 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1992 Earth Summit, there have been increased efforts on an international scale to address global climate change. Reducing the increased levels of CO2 and other "greenhouse gases," which are believed to be contributing to this climatic change, will require major effort on the part of the world's governments. This means that the environmental, economic, social, and political consequences of climate change must be understood, and that strategies to mitigate climate change must also address these issues. The workshop detailed in this book concentrated on how economic principles and analysis could contribute to the planning of forestry projects aimed at affecting terrestrial carbon balances. More than 30 international scientists came together for one week near Stockholm, Sweden and divided into working groups charged with addressing a specific issue and preparing a paper within this time frame. This book contains the majority of papers presented at this meeting, and includes both the working group papers and the individually presented papers.

Book Economics of Forestry

Download or read book Economics of Forestry written by Roger A. Sedjo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2003. The 'Economics of Forestry' is a specialized subset of resource economics addressing a specific natural resource - the forest - which is usually a relatively long time period. Hence, forest economics has characteristics similar to nonrenewable resources but also has those of a renewable resource, in some cases approaching those of agriculture. This volume comprises some of the most significant journal essays in forest economics and forest policy. The International Library of Environmental Economics and Policy explores the influence of economics on the development of environmental and natural resource policy. In a series of twenty five volumes, the most significant journal essays in key areas of contemporary environmental and resource policy are collected. Scholars who are recognized for their expertise and contribution to the literature in the various research areas serve as volume editors and write essays that provides the context for the collection. Volumes in the series reflect three broad strands of economic research including 1) Natural and Environmental Resources, 2) Policy Instruments and Institutions and 3) Methodology. The editors, in their introduction to each volume, provide a state-of-the-art overview of the topic and explain the influence and relevance of the collected papers on the development of policy. This reference series provides access to the economic literature that has shaped contemporary perspectives on land use analysis and policy.

It identifies what can be done currently with impact assessments and suggests how to undertake such assessments. Impediments to linking biophysical and socioeconomic models into integrated assessments for policy purposes are identified, and recommendations for future research activities to improve the state of the art and remove these impediments to model integration are provided. This book is for natural and social scientists with an interest in the impacts of climate change on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and their socioeconomic impacts, and policy makers interested in understanding the status of current assessment capabilities and in identifying priority areas for future research.

Five critical questions summarize the focus of this work: - To what extent is the direct utilization of forests contributingto the decline of this vital resource, and how does the loss of globalforests affect essential components of our ecosystem? - How can we formulate and implement policies which will guaranteethe continued supply of adequate forest resources for this and futuregenerations, and, in particular, how critical are societal concepts ofownership and tenure to the achievement of this goal? - How crucial are technological change and international trade insustaining a healthy forest sector and dependent economy? - How can we remedy the negative social impacts of our foresteconomy and integrate the management of our forests with otherresources essential to human welfare? - What are the central issues that affect forest practice andutilization in the Third World?
