Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fungi are sessile, highly sensitive organisms that actively compete for environmental resources both above and below the ground. They assess their surroundings, estimate how much energy they need for particular goals, and then realise the optimum variant. They take measures to control certain environmental resources. They perceive themselves and can distinguish between ‘self’ and ‘non-self’. They process and evaluate information and then modify their behaviour accordingly. These highly diverse competences show us that this is possible owing to sign(aling)-mediated communication processes within fungal cells (intraorganismic), between the same, related and different fungal species (interorganismic), and between fungi and non-fungal organisms (transorganismic). Intraorganismic communication involves sign-mediated interactions within cells (intracellular) and between cells (intercellular). This is crucial in coordinating growth and development, shape and dynamics. Such communication must function both on the local level and between widely separated mycelium parts. This allows fungi to coordinate appropriate response behaviors in a differentiated manner to their current developmental status and physiological influences.

Book Genetics of Adaptation

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rodney Mauricio
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2005-07-20
  • ISBN : 1402038364
  • Pages : 207 pages

Download or read book Genetics of Adaptation written by Rodney Mauricio and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-07-20 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An enduring controversy in evolutionary biology is the genetic basis of adaptation. Darwin emphasized "many slight differences" as the ultimate source of variation to be acted upon by natural selection. In the early 1900’s, this view was opposed by "Mendelian geneticists", who emphasized the importance of "macromutations" in evolution. The Modern Synthesis resolved this controversy, concluding that mutations in genes of very small effect were responsible for adaptive evolution. A decade ago, Allen Orr and Jerry Coyne reexamined the evidence for this neo-Darwinian view and found that both the theoretical and empirical basis for it were weak. Orr and Coyne encouraged evolutionary biologists to reexamine this neglected question: what is the genetic basis of adaptive evolution? In this volume, a new generation of biologists have taken up this challenge. Using advances in both molecular genetic and statistical techniques, evolutionary geneticists have made considerable progress in this emerging field. In this volume, a diversity of examples from plant and animal studies provides valuable information for those interested in the genetics and evolution of complex traits.

Book Gene Expression Systems in Fungi Advancements and Applications

Download or read book Gene Expression Systems in Fungi Advancements and Applications written by Monika Schmoll and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-04 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biotechnology has emerged as one of the key environmentally safe technologies for the future which enables use of biomass to develop novel smart materials and to replace oil derived products. Fungi are the most efficient producers of the enzymes needed for this purpose and in addition they produce a plethora of secondary metabolites, among which novel antibiotics can be found. Industrial application and exploitation of the metabolic capacities of fungi requires highly productive and robust gene expression systems, which can be achieved by selection of appropriate species and strain improvement. In this book we aim to summarize homologous and heterologous gene expression systems of fungi for production of enzymes and secondary metabolites. A broad overview on requirements, challenges and successful applications shall serve as a basis for further development of fungi as biotechnological workhorses in research and industry.

Book Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

Download or read book Biochemistry and Molecular Biology written by Robert Brambl and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-05-06 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biochemistry and molecular biology are among the most rapidly emerging areas in the life sciences. Indeed, a number of important advances have been made with fungi and yeasts since the first edition of this volume was published in 1996. Still further, the influence that genomics projects have had on the design and interpretation of experiments in almost all areas is truly impressive. The availability of large amounts of sequence data has quickly altered the scope and dimensions of genetics and biochemistry, leading to new insights into fungal biology. Earlier chapters on mitochondrial import of proteins, pH and regulation of gene expression, stress responses, signal transduction, polysaccharidases, trehalose metabolisms, polyamines, carbon metabolism, and acetamide metabolism have been extensively revised or rewritten. Completely new chapters have been prepared on gene ontogeny, peroxisomes, mitochondrial gene expression, chitin biosynthesis, iron metabolism, GATA transcription factors, carbon metabolism, and sulfur metabolism.

Book Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

Download or read book Biochemistry and Molecular Biology written by Dirk Hoffmeister and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-02-19 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition provides a comprehensive look at the molecular genetics and biochemical basis of fungal biology, covering important model organisms such as Aspergilli while also integrating advances made with zygomycetes and basidiomycetes.
