Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the present volume, the first of two on the pharmacology, biochemistry, and physiology of cyclic nucleotides, is to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date anthology on the nature and role of these important chemical regulators. Each of the chapters is the work of internationally known researchers who present a lucid and detailed review of their subject and not merely a single laboratory's viewpoint. The chapters emphasize critical assessments of the field rather than mere listings of experimental findings. By so doing, the contributors present the role of cyclic nucleotides in relationship to other intracellular regulators. Each chapter begins with a detailed summary to allow the reader to obtain a rapid overview of subsequent material. In addition, there are extensive bibliographies and a detailed subject index. Wherever pertinent, the chapters contain sections on drug mechanisms, physiological relevance, and disease processes. The Volume is divided into two sections, each beginning with an overview written by Professors T. W. RALL and P. GREENGARD, respectively. The first section focuses on the detailed pharmacology and chemistry of cyclic nucleotides, including their formation, degradation, measurement, and interaction with various modulatory agents, such as receptors and calcium. The second section is concerned with the biochemistry of protein phosphorylation, a process which appears to be one of the most important mechanisms for the intracellular expression of cyclic nucleotide action in eukaryotic cells.

Book Biochemistry of Brain

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sudhir Kumar
  • Publisher : Elsevier
  • Release : 2013-10-22
  • ISBN : 1483153592
  • Pages : 634 pages

Download or read book Biochemistry of Brain written by Sudhir Kumar and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biochemistry of Brain is a collection of articles dealing with the developments in the biochemistry of the brain. This book gives a comprehensive and critical discussion of important developments in studies concerning the above subject. This text discusses the structure, function, and metabolism of glycosphingolipids, which are related to the study of sphingolipid storage diseases. Inborn defects of metabolism are found in Gaucher's and Fabry's disease, which are characterized by lipid accumulation in the brain. Another paper reviews the chemical and genetics of critically lysosomal hydrolase deficiencies that can cause the storage of sphingolipids. This book then explains the role of myelin basic protein in lipids in vivo that the weak bonding of the protein is not a major component of myelin stability. Another paper discusses the procedures for isolating subfractions of myelin and myelin-related membranes, with some attention given on the alterations in the subfractionation of myelin in pathological hypomyelinating and demyelinating conditions. Another article discusses the biochemical and enzymatic composition of lysosomes and the biosynthesis, intracellular transport, storage, and the degradation of lysosomal constituents. This collection of papers will benefit scientists doing research in microbiology, microchemistry, molecular genetics, and neurochemistry.

Book Calcium and Cell Function

Download or read book Calcium and Cell Function written by Wai Yiu Cheung and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calcium and Cell Function, Volume I: Calmodulin covers calmodulin-regulated functions. The book discusses the preparation, properties, structure, function, evolution, and structure-function relationships of calmodulin; and calmodulin-dependent adenylate cyclase. The text also describes the transport of calmodulin and plasma membrane calcium; the role of calmodulin and troponin in the regulation of phosphorylase kinase from mammalian skeletal muscle; and calcium-dependent protein phosphorylation in mammalian brain and other tissues. The role of calmodulin in dopaminergic transmission; the immunocytochemical localization of calmodulin in rat tissues; and the immunocytochemical studies of the localization of calmodulin and caM-BP80 in the brain are also considered. The book further tackles the mechanisms and pharmacological implications of altering calmodulin activity. Molecular cardiologists, biochemists, and pharmacologists will find the book invaluable.

Book Neural Control of Circulation

Download or read book Neural Control of Circulation written by Maysie Hurnes and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neural Control of Circulation presents an in-depth view of specialized areas in the neural regulation of the circulatory system that have been the subject of intensive research, the historical basis and theory from which those investigations evolved, and directions for future studies. Special emphasis is placed on critical evaluation of the experimental data in each field of research. This volume is comprised of seven chapters and begins with a synthesis of a large number of studies undertaken using conscious animals, particularly those that focuses on the behavioral and cerebral control of cardiovascular function. The second chapter explores the role of the brain stem and cerebellum in cardiovascular control. Next, specific research areas concerning bulbospinal control of sympathetic nerve discharge are discussed. This is followed by a chapter devoted to the nucleus tractus solitarii and experimental neurogenic hypertension. A concept in potential hypertensive mechanisms involving long-term transsynaptic regulation of adrenal medullary function is also described, and the neural control of the circulation during hypoxia is considered. Finally, aspects of central nervous system pharmacology and regulation of circulation are examined. This book is designed for individuals who are interested in the cardiovascular system and its function, and should also prove useful to students and researchers in physiology and individuals in other ancillary areas of bioscience.

Parts IV and V examine the concepts of synaptic dynamics of brain regulators and the isolation, characterization, methods of analysis, and mechanism of action of catecholamines. Part VI focuses on the complexities that surround the extrapolation of catecholamine function into the realms of electrophysiology and behavior. Part VII discusses the metabolism, behavioral, neurological, and physiological effects of amphetamine and other drugs of abuse. The concluding parts describe the role of catecholamine and its metabolism in neurologic diseases, such as schizophrenia.
