Book Regulation of the Hedgehog Signaling Effector Cubitus Interruptus by Slimb Dependent Partial Proteolysis and Control of Specific Activity

Download or read book Regulation of the Hedgehog Signaling Effector Cubitus Interruptus by Slimb Dependent Partial Proteolysis and Control of Specific Activity written by Margery G. Smelkinson and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hh also regulates the specific activity of Ci-155. Prior evidence supported a role for phosphorylation as a suppressor of Ci-155 activation independent of proteolysis. However, we show flaws in these previous data and determine that neither phosphorylation nor the cytoplasmic tethering function of Cos2 significantly restricts the activity of a Ci-155 variant that cannot be proteolyzed. We further provide evidence that Su(fu) is the key silencer of specific activity and Fused kinase activity is required to counter this inhibition to activate Ci.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1 Kevin Moses It is now 25 years since the study of the development of the compound eye in Drosophila really began with a classic paper (Ready et al. 1976). In 1864, August Weismann published a monograph on the development of Diptera and included some beautiful drawings of the developing imaginal discs (Weismann 1864). One of these is the first description of the third instar eye disc in which Weismann drew a vertical line separating a posterior domain that included a regular pattern of clustered cells from an anterior domain without such a pattern. Weismann suggested that these clusters were the precursors of the adult ommatidia and that the line marks the anterior edge of the eye. In his first suggestion he was absolutely correct - in his second he was wrong. The vertical line shown was not the anterior edge of the eye, but the anterior edge of a moving wave of patterning and cell type specification that 112 years later (1976) Ready, Hansen and Benzer would name the "morphogenetic furrow". While it is too late to hear from August Weismann, it is a particular pleasure to be able to include a chapter in this Volume from the first author of that 1976 paper: Don Ready! These past 25 years have seen an astonishing explosion in the study of the fly eye (see Fig.

Book Developmental Biology of Neoplastic Growth

Download or read book Developmental Biology of Neoplastic Growth written by Alvaro Macieira-Coelho and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-11-04 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, tumour growth is perceived as a deviation from the normal development of the human organism. The molecular, cellular, and tissue determinants of different tumours are discussed showing that each is a different disease, often corresponding to a particular developmental stage. The natural history of several cancers illustrates how clinical incidence can be just the visible part of the iceberg, while the first changes at the tissue level sometimes occur several years before tumour growth becomes manifest. Several mechanisms are proposed to explain the distribution of cancers during the human life span and the decline of the incidence of cancers during human senescence.

Book Reduction and Mechanism

    Book Details:
  • Author : Alex Rosenberg
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2020-06-04
  • ISBN : 1108605117
  • Pages : 140 pages

Download or read book Reduction and Mechanism written by Alex Rosenberg and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-04 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reductionism is a widely endorsed methodology among biologists, a metaphysical theory advanced to vindicate the biologist's methodology, and an epistemic thesis those opposed to reductionism have been eager to refute. While the methodology has gone from strength to strength in its history of achievements, the metaphysical thesis grounding it remained controversial despite its significant changes over the last 75 years of the philosophy of science. Meanwhile, antireductionism about biology, and especially Darwinian natural selection, became orthodoxy in philosophy of mind, philosophy of science, and philosophy of biology. This Element expounds the debate about reductionism in biology, from the work of the post-positivists to the end of the century debates about supervenience, multiple realizability, and explanatory exclusion. It shows how the more widely accepted 21st century doctrine of 'mechanism' - reductionism with a human face - inherits both the strengths and the challenges of the view it has largely supplanted.

Book Molecular Genetics of Axial Patterning Growth and Disease in Drosophila Eye

Download or read book Molecular Genetics of Axial Patterning Growth and Disease in Drosophila Eye written by Amit Singh and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-05-18 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drosophila melanogaster (fruit fly) is a highly versatile model with a genetic legacy of more than a century. It provides powerful genetic, cellular, biochemical and molecular biology tools to address many questions extending from basic biology to human diseases. One of the most important questions in biology is how a multi-cellular organism develops from a single-celled embryo. The discovery of the genes responsible for pattern formation has helped refine this question and has led to other questions, such as the role of various genetic and cell biological pathways in regulating the process of pattern formation and growth during organogenesis. The Drosophila eye model has been extensively used to study molecular genetic mechanisms involved in patterning and growth. Since the genetic machinery involved in the Drosophila eye is similar to humans, it has been used to model human diseases and homology to eyes in other taxa. This updated second edition covers current progress in the study of molecular genetic mechanisms of pattern formation, mutations in axial patterning, genetic regulation of growth, and more using the Drosophila eye as a model.
