Download or read book Transgenic Fish written by Choy Leong Hew and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1992-06-16 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies on transgenic fish, in contrast to mammals, are still in their infancy. However, it is evident that such fish will not only be of considerable economic benefit to aquaculture but will enable scientists to make quantum leaps in their understanding of the physiological and biochemical mechanisms unique to fish, and of the developmental biology of vertebrates in general. The potential of transgenic fish for research and industrial development is beginning to be widely recognized. This timely volume encompasses the full spectrum of current research on transgenic fish. It will be valuable to many scientists who intend to explore the merits of the technology for the first time.

Book Circulation Respiration and Metabolism

Download or read book Circulation Respiration and Metabolism written by Raymond Gilles and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 579 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is one of those published from the proceedings of the invited lectures to the First International Congress of Comparative Physiology and Biochemistry I organized at Liege (Belgium) in August 1984 under the auspices of the Section of Comparative Physiology and Biochemistry of the International Union of Biological Sciences. In a general foreword to these different volumes, it seems to me appropriate to consider briefly what may be the comparative approach. Living organisms, beyond the diversity of their morphological forms, have evolved a widespread range of basic solutions to cope with the different problems, both organisma1 and environmenta1 with which they are faced. Soon after the turn of the century, some biologists realized that these solutions can be best comprehended in the frame work of a comparative approach integrating results of physiologica1 and biochemica1 studies done at the organismic, cellular and molecular levels. The development of this approach amongst both physiologists and biochemists remained, however, extremely slow until recently.

Book Fish Antifreeze Proteins

    Book Details:
  • Author : Kathryn Vanya Ewart
  • Publisher : World Scientific
  • Release : 2002
  • ISBN : 9812706534
  • Pages : 249 pages

Download or read book Fish Antifreeze Proteins written by Kathryn Vanya Ewart and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2002 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Antifreeze proteins enable organisms to avoid freezing under extreme conditions. The greatest diversity of known antifreeze proteins is in teleost fish and much work has gone into the understanding of these proteins and their applications. Antifreeze proteins are an exciting model system for the study of protein-surface (ice) interaction. They have served as unique model structures in protein science and they are also useful tools in the study of fish physiology and behaviour. Their emergence in some fish species has even provided a rare glimpse of de novo protein evolution in action. To cover the diverse aspects of fish antifreeze study, a wide spectrum of researchers was selected to write comprehensive articles on different areas of antifreeze research. This text should be a very useful and informative resource for life science researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume in the series covers such topics as DNA fingerprinting of fishes, the cytochromes P450 in fish, the molecular biology of bacterial fish diseases, and new insights into the origins of the diversity and distribution of fish antifreeze proteins. The book will be of great value to fisheries scientists, animal biochemists, physiologists and endocrinologists, and aquaculturists. It will provide researchers and students alike with a pertinent information source from theoretical and experimental angles.

Book Life Under Extreme Conditions

    Book Details:
  • Author : Guido di Prisco
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 3642760562
  • Pages : 146 pages

Download or read book Life Under Extreme Conditions written by Guido di Prisco and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In their very first lecture biochemists learn that biomolecules, namely nucleic acids, proteins and lipids, are extremely temperature sensitive and will denature and lose their function easily. Then how do Archaebacteria survive in hot springs or Antarctic fishes which live in ice-cold water? The way nature engineered subcellular structures, lipid membranes or proteins to meet the biochemical requirements of extreme conditions - like extreme temperature or salt concentrations - is described in Life Under Extreme Conditions.

Book Survival Strategies in Extreme Cold and Desiccation

Download or read book Survival Strategies in Extreme Cold and Desiccation written by Mari Iwaya-Inoue and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-04 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comprehensively describes biological phenomena, adaptation mechanisms, and strategies of living organisms to survive under extremely cold or desiccated conditions at molecular, cellular, and organ levels. It also provides tremendous potential for applications of the findings to a wide variety of industries. The volume consists of three parts: Part 1, Adaptation Mechanisms of Cold, and Part 2, Adaptation Mechanisms of Desiccation, collect up-to-date research on mechanisms and strategies of living organisms such as sleeping chironomids, polar marine fishes, hibernating mammals, bryophytes, dormant seeds, and boreal plants to survive under extreme cold and desiccated conditions at molecular, cellular, and organ levels. Part 3, Application Technologies from Laboratory to Society, covers various applications to a wide variety of industries such as the medical, food, and agricultural and life science industries. For example, biological knowledge of how plants and animals survive under cold, drought, and desiccated conditions may provide a hint on how we can improve crop production in a very fragile environment in global climate change. Unique molecules that protect cells during desiccation and freezing such as trehalose and antifreeze protein (AFP) have potential for use to preserve cells, tissues, and organs for the long term under very stable conditions. In addition, the current progress of supercooling technology of cells may lead us to solve problems of cellular high sensitivity to freezing injury, which will dramatically improve the usability of these cells. Furthermore, knowledge of water substitution and glass formation as major mechanisms for formulation designs and new drying technologies will contribute to the development of food preservation and drug delivery systems under dry conditions. Written by contributors who have been conducting cutting-edge science in related fields, this title is recommended to a wide variety of readers who are interested in learning from such organisms their strategies, mechanisms, and applications, and it will inspire researchers in various disciplines.

Book Molecular Approaches to Gene Expression and Protein Structure

Download or read book Molecular Approaches to Gene Expression and Protein Structure written by M Siddiqui and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecular Approaches to Gene Expression and Protein Structure documents the proceedings of the international symposium ""Gene and Protein Structure"" held in conjunction with the 22nd annual meeting of the Chilean Society of Biology at the campus of the Universidad Austral de Chile in Valdivia, Chile, December 1979. Organized by the Chilean Society of Biology, the symposium was designed not only to explore the concepts involved in the evolution of genes and protein structure but to bring together scientists from the United States and their counterparts from the Chilean academic institutions. The subject matter presented in this book reflects the research interests and experiences of the participating authors. The emphasis, in general, is on molecular and regulatory processes and cellular control mechanisms. The chapters include reviews on selected areas of interest written in a manner intelligible to newcomers to biological research, and present an in-depth analysis of the work with a balanced presentation of facts, concepts, and projections.
