Book Regularity of Old Faithful Geyser Yellowstone National Park Wyoming

Download or read book Regularity of Old Faithful Geyser Yellowstone National Park Wyoming written by Philip Forsyth Fix and published by . This book was released on 1949 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It is common belief that Old Faithful Geyser, the most celebrated geyser in the world, 1) has become irregular and even erratic, 2) does not erupt in winter, 3) erupts to heights much less than formerly, 4) discharges much less water than formerly, and 5) is the only regular large geyser. These popular legends are false, the record for 1870-1947 shows a degree of relative regularity in behavior that is amazing for a geyser of such great size and complexity of function."-Opening.

The most famous geyser is Old Faithful, named in 1870 during the Washburn-Langford-Doane Expedition. In 1871, the US Geological and Geographical Survey, led by Dr. F.V. Hayden, reached the Upper Geyser Basin. In just over a day, the explorers witnessed eruptions of many geysers still seen today, including Giantess, Beehive, Grotto, Castle, and Old Faithful. Yellowstone became the first National Park in 1872. Since then, visitors have come in increasing numbers to witness the unique geysers, numerous wildlife, and spectacular scenery.

Book Flow and Fracture of Rocks

Download or read book Flow and Fracture of Rocks written by Hugh Corey Heard and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 1972 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 16 (The Griggs Volume). David Tressel Griggs was born October 6, 1911, in Columbus, Ohio. His parents were Robert Fiske and Laura Amelia Tressel Griggs. His father was a widely known professor of botany and a leading ecologist and environmental conservationist at a time when these viewpoints were less familiar than they are today. David was an undergraduate at Ohio State University in 1930 when he participated in a National Geographic Society expedition, led by his father, to the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes. This Alaskan experience and the encouragement he received from a gifted and enthusiastic teacher, Professor Edmund M. Spieker, led him to choose for his life work the application of physics to the problems of the earth. After a year of graduate studies in geology at Ohio State, David moved on in 1933 to Harvard, where a new progTam of high-pressure studies devoted to geophysical problems had just been initiated under the inspired guidance of Percy W. Bridgman, pre-eminent leader in the experimental exploration of the physics of very high pressures and in the philosophical analysis of the logical processes of scientific thinking.
