Book Extreme Values Regular Variation and Point Processes

Download or read book Extreme Values Regular Variation and Point Processes written by Sidney I. Resnick and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-20 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the fundamental mathematical and stochastic process techniques needed to study the behavior of extreme values of phenomena based on independent and identically distributed random variables and vectors. It emphasizes the core primacy of three topics necessary for understanding extremes: the analytical theory of regularly varying functions; the probabilistic theory of point processes and random measures; and the link to asymptotic distribution approximations provided by the theory of weak convergence of probability measures in metric spaces.

Book Regular Variation and Differential Equations

Download or read book Regular Variation and Differential Equations written by Vojislav Maric and published by Springer. This book was released on 2007-05-06 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book offering an application of regular variation to the qualitative theory of differential equations. The notion of regular variation, introduced by Karamata (1930), extended by several scientists, most significantly de Haan (1970), is a powerful tool in studying asymptotics in various branches of analysis and in probability theory. Here, some asymptotic properties (including non-oscillation) of solutions of second order linear and of some non-linear equations are proved by means of a new method that the well-developed theory of regular variation has yielded. A good graduate course both in real analysis and in differential equations suffices for understanding the book.

Book Geometry and Analysis on Complex Manifolds

Download or read book Geometry and Analysis on Complex Manifolds written by Toshiki Mabuchi and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1994 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents papers dedicated to Professor Shoshichi Kobayashi, commemorating the occasion of his sixtieth birthday on January 4, 1992.The principal theme of this volume is “Geometry and Analysis on Complex Manifolds”. It emphasizes the wide mathematical influence that Professor Kobayashi has on areas ranging from differential geometry to complex analysis and algebraic geometry. It covers various materials including holomorphic vector bundles on complex manifolds, Kähler metrics and Einstein–Hermitian metrics, geometric function theory in several complex variables, and symplectic or non-Kähler geometry on complex manifolds. These are areas in which Professor Kobayashi has made strong impact and is continuing to make many deep invaluable contributions.

Book Linguistic Variation and Change

Download or read book Linguistic Variation and Change written by Scott F. Kiesling and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2011-04-29 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of variation and change is at the heart of the sociolinguistics. Providing a wide survey of the field, this textbook is organised around three constraints on variation: linguistic structure, social structure and identity, and social and linguistic perception. By considering both structure and meaning, Scott F. Kiesling examines the most important issues surrounding variation theory, including canonical studies and terms as well as challenges to them.

Book Dynamic Variation in Second Language Acquisition

Download or read book Dynamic Variation in Second Language Acquisition written by Bronwen Patricia Dyson and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2021-08-15 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamic Variation in Second Language Acquisition makes a cutting-edge contribution to knowledge about how second language learners develop their second language. Drawing comprehensively on Processability Theory’s theoretical understanding that individual variation dynamically interacts with ordered stages of language acquisition, the book provides an informative, critical analysis of historical and contemporary debates about the role of variation in linguistic variation, particularly second language variation. Richly illustrated with a forensic year-long study of how eight adolescent learners of English vary in their acquisition of syntax and morphology, this monograph shows that learners vary in their timing of development between two distinct learner types along a continuum and without skipping stages. The book uncovers how learner variation is dynamic and quite (although not entirely) systematic and how this variation contributes to change in the second language. It will be essential reading for researchers, students, and practitioners.
