Book excerpt: The sadness flashed across her face, and she married someone for her. How many lovesick tears. How much love and hate have you experienced? The morning and evening were all for this beauty. The one who loves is destined to be a king, the one who misses is after all true love. The Demon Witch was red in color, like a blooming flower under the moon. That melody, "The Serene Maiden," had caused him to grieve for several lifetimes, and he had even recited it for several lifetimes.Perhaps, all of this was just a mistake, a mistake that no one could regret. He only saw the silk handkerchief that was handed over by a woman. The butterfly on the silk handkerchief flew out with tears in its eyes. The butterfly on the silk handkerchief danced in the air! I hated and I loved."It's just that all of this is so upbeat."

Download or read book The State of Race written by Sze Wei Ang and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An innovative comparative study of the role racial stereotypes play in expressing state power under globalization. Contemporary ideas about race are often assumed to be products of specific locales and histories, yet we find versions of the same ideas about race across countries and cultures. How can we account for this paradox? In The State of Race, Sze Wei Ang argues that globalization has led to new ways of using racial stereotypes as shorthand for complex social relations in disparate national contexts. Literature then provides a key to understanding these labels and the role that race has played in shoring up state power since World War II. Ang contends that in an era marked by global economic dependence, the nation-state has only become more rather than less central to organizing social life via tropes of race that cast human and cultural differences in morally charged terms. Focusing on a series of Asian American and Malaysian texts, Ang tracks the significance of two figures in particular—the model minority and the communist spy. Appearing in novels, politics, and popular culture, these stereotypes anchor powerful narratives about race, global capital, and state sovereignty. In exploring the United States and Malaysia, two countries that seem to not have much in common, Ang reveals how they share very similar ways of conceptualizing race and sheds light on an emerging global story of value. “This book is an innovative and transnational study that demonstrates a rigorous and revelatory comprehension of Malaysian racial formation in a global context. The literary readings and their framing, as well as the incisive movement through key racial projects in Malaysia’s postcolonial history, are all exceptional.” — Josephine Nock-Hee Park, author of Cold War Friendships: Korea, Vietnam, and Asian American Literature

Download or read book When the One You Love Is Gone written by Dr. Rebekah L. Miles and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2012-05-01 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a loved one dies, you don’t get over it, but you can move on. The bad news is that we never fully “get over” the loss of those we hold most dear; we bear those scars to the grave. The good news is that God is at work in us turning our loss and pain into something beautiful. God can take the scars and the mess and the heartache of our lives-- yours and mine-- and use it to give new life, new life to us and new life to others. God is not in the business of zapping our loved ones and stealing them away from us. But in a world where death waits for every person, God stands ready. God stands ready to receive our beloved dead as they cross over; and God stands ready to guide us through the saddest days, to walk with us through our grief, and to take us into places we never could have imagined places of hope and renewal. If God could take a cross and broken body and make of them redemption, God can take your pain and heartache and fashion them into new life. This book is composed of the reflections that point to broader lessons that will help those who find themselves passing through grief, as well as the pastors, counselors, and friends whose job is to accompany the traveler.

Download or read book Reading Shakespeare in the Movies written by Eric S. Mallin and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-31 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading Shakespeare in the Movies: Non-Adaptations and Their Meaning analyzes the unacknowledged, covert presence of Shakespearean themes, structures, characters, and symbolism in selected films. Writers and directors who forge an unconscious, unintentional connection to Shakespeare’s work create non-adaptations, cinema that is unexpectedly similar to certain Shakespeare plays while remaining independent as art. These films can illuminate core semantic issues in those plays in ways that direct adaptations cannot. Eric S. Mallin explores how Shakespeare illuminates these movies, analyzing the ways that The Godfather, Memento, Titanic, Birdman, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre take on new life in dialogue with the famous playwright. In addition to challenging our ideas about adaptation, Mallin works to inspire new awareness of the meanings of Shakespearean stories in the contemporary world.
Download or read book I know she loves me written by Prashant Singh and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2019-06-25 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The story which has a perfect beginning might end happily, but some stories also have fatal and painful endings.” ‘I Know She Loves Me’ is such an amalgamation. It’s a story of unending and undying love, affection, inspiration, desirable dreams and also hatred. Arpit, a half-wit boy, met with an intelligent and a half-Muslim girl, Aayat, who is very obsessed with books and in chasing her dreams. Arpit falls in love with Aayat at their first meet. As time moved on, Aayat liked him too. Apparently, she loved him too, but she did not express her love to him, neither did Arpit confess his love to her. However, apart from their unconfessed love, life had made another plan for them. Something goes unexpectedly wrong, and Arpit has to fight with many unexpected things in life’s situations. Finally, on Valentine’s Day when Arpit gathered some courage and proposed to her, Aayat’s reply was unexpected to him. She refused to accept his love unreasonably. Arpit was shocked and disappointed with her answer. Gradually, Aayat stopped talking to him after that Valentine’s Day; she even created a distance from Arpit’s life. Well, what would Arpit do now? Will he forget her and move on with his life, or will he find the reason, why Aayat left him? Will he get his Aayat back in his life? It is not any simple love story. It is actually the story of eternal faith of true love.
