This book was released on 2019-03-18 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a semiotic study of the re-elaboration of Christian narratives and values in a corpus of Italian novels published after the Second Vatican Council (1960s). It tackles the complex set of ideas expressed by Italian writers about the biblical narration of human origins and traditional religious language and ritual, the perceived clash between the immanent and transcendent nature and role of the Church, and the problematic notion of sanctity emerging from contemporary narrative.

Download or read book Resurrection of the Dead written by Athenagoras and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2015-12-06 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Athenagoras (circa 133 - 190) was a Father of the Church, a Proto-orthodox Christian apologist who lived during the second half of the 2nd century of whom little is known for certain, besides that he was Athenian (though possibly not originally from Athens), a philosopher, and a convert to Christianity. In his writings he styles himself as "Athenagoras, the Athenian, Philosopher, and Christian". There is some evidence that he was a Platonist before his conversion, but this is not certain. His writings bear witness to his erudition and culture, his power as a philosopher and rhetorician, his keen appreciation of the intellectual temper of his age, and his tact and delicacy in dealing with the powerful opponents of his religion. Thus his writings are credited by some later scholars as having had a more significant impact on their intended audience than the now better-known writings of his more polemical and religiously-grounded contemporaries. The treatise on the Resurrection of the Dead, the first complete exposition of the doctrine in Christian literature, was written later than the Apology, to which it may be considered as an appendix.

Book The Flame Trees of Thika

Download or read book The Flame Trees of Thika written by Elspeth Huxley and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2000-02-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an open cart Elspeth Huxley set off with her parents to travel to Thika in Kenya. As pioneering settlers, they built a house of grass, ate off a damask cloth spread over packing cases, and discovered—the hard way—the world of the African. With an extraordinary gift for detail and a keen sense of humor, Huxley recalls her childhood on the small farm at a time when Europeans waged their fortunes on a land that was as harsh as it was beautiful. For a young girl, it was a time of adventure and freedom, and Huxley paints an unforgettable portrait of growing up among the Masai and Kikuyu people, discovering both the beauty and the terrors of the jungle, and enduring the rugged realities of the pioneer life.

Book Ges il figlio dell uomo

Download or read book Ges il figlio dell uomo written by Arrigo Pareschi and published by Booksprint. This book was released on 2019-08-28 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book The Life of God as Told by Himself

Download or read book The Life of God as Told by Himself written by Franco Ferrucci and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013-04-26 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Blessed are the readers, for this tale of God’s long insomnia will keep them happily awake . . . An extraordinary story.” —Umberto Eco, international bestselling, award-winning author At the center of Franco Ferrucci’s inspired novel is a tender, troubled God. In the beginning is God’s solitude, and because God is lonely he creates the world. He falls in love with earth, plunges into the oceans, lives as plant and reptile and bird. His every thought and mood serve to populate the planet, with consequences that run away from him—sometimes delightfully, sometimes unfortunately. When a new arrival emerges from the apes, God believes he has finally found the companion he needs to help him make sense of his unruly creation. Yet, as the centuries pass, God feels more and more out of place in the world he has created; by the close of his memoir, he is packing his bags. Highly praised and widely reviewed, The Life of God is a playful, wondrous, and irresistible book, recounting thousands of years of religious and philosophical thought. “‘God’s only excuse is that he does not exist,’ wrote Stendhal, but now Franco Ferrucci has provided the Supreme Being with another sort of alibi.” —James Morrow, The Washington Post Book World “The Life of God is, in truth, the synthesis of a charming writer’s . . . expression of his boundless hopes for, and poignant disappointments in, his own human kind.” —Jack Miles, The New York Times Book Review “Rather endearing . . . This exceedingly amusing novel . . . is a continuous provocation and delight; there isn’t a dull page in it.” —Kirkus Reviews

  • Pages : 177 pages

Download or read book God s Mountain written by Erri De Luca and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2002-12-03 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a story told by a boy in his thirteenth year, recorded in his secret diary. His life is about to change; his world, about to open. He lives in Montedidio—God’s Mountain—a cluster of alleys in the heart of Naples. He brings a paycheck home every Saturday from Mast’Errico’s carpentry workshop where he sweeps the floor. He is on his way to becoming a man—his boy’s voice is abandoning him. His wooden boomerang is neither toy nor tool, but something in between. Then there is Maria, the thirteen-year-old girl who lives above him and, like so many girls, is wiser than he. She carries the burden of a secret life herself. She’ll speak to him for the first time this summer. There is also his friendship with a cobbler named Rafaniello, a Jewish refugee who has escaped the horrors of the Holocaust, who has no idea how long he’s been on this earth, and who is said to sprout wings for a blessed few. It is 1963, a young man’s summer of discovery. A time for a boy with innocent hands and a pure heart to look beyond the ordinary in everyday things to see the far-reaching landscape, and all of its possibilities, from a rooftop terrace on God’s Mountain.
