Book Carrots Sticks and Sermons

Download or read book Carrots Sticks and Sermons written by John McCormick and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature on policy strategies, instruments, and styles is impressive. Still, a complex variety of theoretical and conceptual approaches and analytical tools hamper a good overview. Carrots, Sticks, and Sermons proposes such a framework for the field and clearly shows how public policy instruments are classified, packaged, and chosen, while highlighting the role evaluation plays in the instruments-choice process.Carrots, Sticks, and Sermons offers a comprehensive analysis of categories and typologies of policy instruments. It classifies sticks, carrots, and sermons - or, more specifically, regulation, economic means, and information. Readers are offered a comparative perspective of evaluation practice in foreign contexts. Special attention is paid to the examples of Sweden, the Netherlands, Belgium, England, Canada, the United States, and the Republic of Korea. As such, this volume crosses language barriers that stand in the way of dispersing research results among the international community of theoreticians and practitioners. As nations become increasingly interdependent, problems of implementation and evaluation of policy choices will become issues of increasing gravity.Carrots, Sticks, and Sermons provides insights into the traditional and current practice of policy and program evaluation in various contexts. The book's theory of comparative public policy will produce understanding and guidance in designing better policies. It will be of wide interest to those in the fields of public policy, particularly policy design, policy implementation, policy evaluation, comparative politics, and economics.

Book Educational Planning and Social Change

Download or read book Educational Planning and Social Change written by International Institute for Educational Planning and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of the assumptions on which earlier models and approaches in educational planning were predicated have turned out to be over-simplistic, limited, or altogether not appropriate for the complex nature of the development process in many developed and, especially, underdeveloped societies. Recognizing these problems, the International Institute for Educational Planning (IIEP) brought together a number of researchers, policy-makers, and planners from all parts of the world for a week of reflection and discussion on the past, present, and future of educational planning. This volume is a synthesis of the main results of this international forum, and it attempts to delineate the tasks for educational planning in the coming years. Chapters contain the texts of five background papers, with comments by IIEP staff members; the edited versions of the reports of the three working groups; and a synthesis of the seminar discussions divided into five broad topics that reflect the convergence of discussion. The last chapter reviews some of the observations made at the seminar on research and training needs in educational planning. A paper, "Schooling and Future Society" by Johan Galtung, is included as an appendix. Seminar participants are listed. (Author/MLF)

Book Re reading the past

Download or read book Re reading the past written by J.R. Martin and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2003-11-17 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Re/reading the Past is concerned with the discourses of history, from the complementary perspectives of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). The papers in the book stress the discursive construction of the past, focussing on the different social narratives which compete for official acknowledgement. Issues of collective and cultural memory are addressed, reflecting the "linguistic turn" in the Social Sciences. The book covers a range of discourses, interpreting texts from popular culture to academic discourse including the construction and evaluation of past events in a variety of places around the world. It is especially timely in its focus on the construction of time and value in a post-colonial world where history discourses are central to on-going processes of reconciliation, debates on war crimes, and the issues of amnesty and restitution. As such the book fills a significant gap in interdisciplinary debates as well as in register and genre analysis, and will be of general interest to historians, political scientists and discourse analysts as well as students and teachers of ESP (English for Specific Purposes) and EAP (English for Academic Purposes).

Book The Real Ebonics Debate

Download or read book The Real Ebonics Debate written by Theresa Perry and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 1998-06-17 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the winter of 1996, the Oakland school board's resolution recognizing Ebonics as a valid linguistic system generated a brief firestorm of hostile criticism and misinformation, then faded from public consciousness. But in the classrooms of America, the question of how to engage the distinctive language of many African-American children remains urgent. In The Real Ebonics Debate some of our most important educators, linguists, and writers, as well as teachers and students reporting from the field, examine the lessons of the Ebonics controversy and unravel the complex issues at the heart of how America educates its children.
