Book The Bellah Bellar Family Register Revisited

Download or read book The Bellah Bellar Family Register Revisited written by Kerry Scott Hayes and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2021-06-24 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was originally published as "The Bellah Family Register" by Lovick Pierce Bellah in 1945. When he sold his last hard copy he granted me permission to revise and update the book. In 1945 Lovick had 4 generations covered in his book. In "The Bellah/Bellar Family Register Revisited" we cover 12 generations. The following people were a major help in updating this book to the point it is right now: Connie Anderson (You are greatly missed) Tammie Chada Buck Lyons Ruby Lee Dryden Carolyn & Duke Livingston Dorothy Hoenhe Lurline Livingston White Everyone that's on the Bellah/Bellar ListServ And many more than I can't think of at the moment. There are still many family members missing from this revision. Even with those missing members this is still a treasure full of information and connections to many branches and many of the Bellah/Bellar family. With a total of 245 pages in small print there is sure to be some great connections in there for everyone. This book is indexed with most of the names in this book. The index alone takes up 38 pages that are double columns. We have included a number of pictures. Some of those date back to ca. 1890 and possibly older. There is also certified bible records including birth and death records dating back to the 1700's. Since I released this book in the 1990's there has not been but very minor revisions due to my health. On page 242 you will find contact information should you want to further this project and explore expanding the family register. When you decided to purchase you a copy, make sure to buy 2 copies, one for you and one for your public library. There is no better way to get more connections than to get this information out there so more people can join the project to keep updating this register for the family. Be blessed!

Book A Joyfully Serious Man

Download or read book A Joyfully Serious Man written by Matteo Bortolini and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-10-19 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The brilliant but turbulent life of a public intellectual who transformed the social sciences Robert Bellah (1927–2013) was one of the most influential social scientists of the twentieth century. Trained as a sociologist, he crossed disciplinary boundaries in pursuit of a greater comprehension of religion as both a cultural phenomenon and a way to fathom the depths of the human condition. A Joyfully Serious Man is the definitive biography of this towering figure in modern intellectual life, and a revelatory portrait of a man who led an adventurous yet turbulent life. Drawing on Bellah's personal papers as well as in-depth interviews with those who knew him, Matteo Bortolini tells the story of an extraordinary scholarly career and an eventful and tempestuous life. He describes Bellah's exile from the United States during the hysteria of the McCarthy years, his crushing personal tragedies, and his experiments with sexuality. Bellah understood religion as a mysterious human institution that brings together the scattered pieces of individual and collective experiences. Bortolini shows how Bellah championed intellectual openness and innovation through his relentless opposition to any notion of secularization as a decline of religion and his ideas about the enduring tensions between individualism and community in American society. Based on nearly two decades of research, A Joyfully Serious Man is a revelatory chronicle of a leading public intellectual who was both a transformative thinker and a restless, passionate seeker.

Book The Anthem Companion to Robert N Bellah

Download or read book The Anthem Companion to Robert N Bellah written by Matteo Bortolini and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2019-06-28 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Anthem Companion to Robert N. Bellah" is the first major collection of essays on the life and work of Robert N. Bellah (1927–2013), one of the foremost sociologists of religion of the twentieth century. Bellah’s work was central to many fields: the sociology of Japanese religion; the relationship between sociology and the humanities; the relationship between American religion and politics; the cultures of modern individualism; evolution and society. Bellah’s seminal work on “civil religion” in the early 1970s created a huge debate across the disciplines that continues into the present times; his coauthored book "Habits of the Heart" (1985) was a best seller and the object of sustained discussion in the general public sphere; his last magnum opus, Religion in Human Evolution, published at 84, was a monument to an extraordinary scholarly and intellectual career. The object of this collection of essays by top American and European scholars from the social sciences and humanities is to highlight the richness of Bellah’s work. Each essay has a double character: it introduces a single topic in an accessible and complete way and then presents a reflection on the viability and import of Bellah’s ideas for interpreting contemporary phenomena.

Book excerpt: The Question for Twentieth-Century China has been the integration of tradition and modernity. In this collection of essays written over a period of some twenty years (1987-2006), Chen Lai reflects on the question in an informative and original way. He reads behind the political slogans and engages with the thought both of Max Weber, Talcott Parsons and Western sociology, and representative Chinese thinkers, notably Feng Youlan and Liang Shuming. While the focus is on China, the book also appeals to anyone interested in this fascinating question of how to modernise whilst retaining the positive values of tradition. Chen Lai s unique and balanced grasp of society marks him out as the foremost thinker in China on this topic today.
