Book Register of Freemen in the City of London in the Reigns of Henry VIII and Edward Vi

Download or read book Register of Freemen in the City of London in the Reigns of Henry VIII and Edward Vi written by Charles Welch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-03 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Register of Freemen in the City of London in the Reigns of Henry VIII and Edward Vi: Translated and Edited, With an Introduction and Index The book contains a record of admissions to the Freedom of the City, with the fees and fines paid to the Chamber, the total for each page being entered at its foot. The entries are in Latin, and the great bulk of them follow three different forms, of ancient use, corres ponding with the usual method of obtaining the Freedom, viz., by apprenticeship, patrimony, and redemption. No instance occurs of the grant of an Honorary Freedom, but John Taylar (page 30) was admitted without payment at the request of the Lord Treasurer. Another class of entry, of which there are but five examples, is the Translation of a Freeman from one Company to another. N o advantage would have been gained by reproducing each entry at full length, either in the original Latin orin a translation. The plan I have adopted is to give a concise abstract of each, in English, embodying all the facts. But to explain the exact nature of the record, a typical example of each of the four different kinds of entries has been reproduced in full, with a translation. These typical entries have been made up by a comparison of various examples, as owing to the defective condition of the manuscripts, no single entry is complete in itself. The entries in these records refer to another set of official books denoted by the letters of the alphabet, and following each other in chronological sequence. Two volumes of this series, M and N, cover the whole period over which the entries extend This period may be roughly put down as from I 524 to 1553, but a glance at any page will show how difficult, if not impossible, it is to arrive at an exact conclusion on this point. The absence of chronological order, or of any perceivable system, in the arrangement of the entries, together with the fragmentary character of the entries themselves, makes it impossible to determine the exact age of the manuscript. The great bulk of the entries belong to the last twelve years of Henry VIII and the first five years of Edward VI, but there are many of earlier and later date. Three earlier volumes in the above series appear in entries of Freedom by Patrimony, the reference being to the date of the father's admission. Books H and I belong to the reigns of Edward IV and Henry VII respectively (p. And Book L to the early part of Henry viii's reign. Book Five Parishes in Late Medieval and Tudor London

Download or read book Five Parishes in Late Medieval and Tudor London written by Gary G Gibbs and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-18 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five Parishes in Late Medieval and Tudor London presents linked microhistorical studies of five London parishes, using their own parish records to reconstruct their individual operations, religious practices, and societies. The parish was a foundational institution in Tudor London. Every layperson inhabited one and they interacted with their neighbors in a variety of parochial activities and events. Each chapter in this book explores a different parish in a different part of the city, revealing their unique cultures, societies,, and economies against the backdrop of presiding themes and developments of the age. Through detailed microhistorical analysis, patterns of collective behavior, parishioner relationships, and parish leadership are highlighted, providing a new perspective on the period. The reader is drawn into the local neighborhoods and able to trace how people living in the Tudor era experienced the tumultuous changes of their time. This book is ideal for scholars and students of early modern history, microhistory, parish studies, the history of the English reformation, and those with an interest in administrative history of the late medieval and early modern periods.

Book The Oxford Handbook of the Age of Shakespeare

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of the Age of Shakespeare written by Robert Malcolm Smuts and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 849 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rather than seeking to survey the historical 'background' to Shakespeare, the essays in the collection display a variety of perspectives, insights and methodologies found in current historical work that may also inform literary studies. In addition to Elizabethan and early seventeenth century polities, they examine such topics as the characteristics of the early modern political imagination; the growth of public controversy over religion and other issues duringthe period and ways in which this can be related to drama; attitudes about honour and shame and their relation to concepts of gender; histories of crime and murder; and ways in which changing attitudeswere expressed through architecture, printed images and the layout of Tudor gardens.

  • Author : John Harley
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2017-07-05

  • Pages : 332 pages

Download or read book William Byrd written by John Harley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive study of William Byrds life (1540-1623) and works to appear for sixty years, and fully takes into consideration recent scholarship. The biographical section includes many newly discovered facts about Byrd and his family, while in the chapters dealing with his music an attempt is made for the first time to outline the chronology of all his compositions. The book begins with a detailed account of Byrd's life, based on a completely fresh examination of original documents, which are quoted extensively. Several previously known documents have now been identified as being in Byrds hand, and some fresh holographs have been discovered. A number of questions such as his parentage and date of birth have been conclusively settled. The book continues with a survey of Byrds music which pays particular attention to its chronological development, and links it where possible to the events and background of his life. A series of appendices includes additional texts of important documents, and a summary catalogue of works. A bibliography and index complete the book. Besides musical illustrations there is a series of plates illustrating documents and places associated with Byrd.
