Book Regions and Powers

Download or read book Regions and Powers written by Barry Buzan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-12-04 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops the idea that since decolonisation, regional patterns of security have become more prominent in international politics. The authors combine an operational theory of regional security with an empirical application across the whole of the international system. Individual chapters cover Africa, the Balkans, CIS Europe, East Asia, EU Europe, the Middle East, North America, South America, and South Asia. The main focus is on the post-Cold War period, but the history of each regional security complex is traced back to its beginnings. By relating the regional dynamics of security to current debates about the global power structure, the authors unfold a distinctive interpretation of post-Cold War international security, avoiding both the extreme oversimplifications of the unipolar view, and the extreme deterritorialisations of many globalist visions of a new world disorder. Their framework brings out the radical diversity of security dynamics in different parts of the world.

Book Atlas of Regional and Free Flaps for Head and Neck Reconstruction

Download or read book Atlas of Regional and Free Flaps for Head and Neck Reconstruction written by Mark L. Urken and published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. This book was released on 2012-01-05 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Atlas depicts in a clear manner the use of regional skin, muscle and musculocutaneous flaps as well as donor sites from distant regions of the body where vascularized skin, muscle, bone, and nerves can be harvested and transferred to the head and neck. Otolaryngologists, plastic surgeons and general surgeons use both regional and free flaps to reconstruct damage to the head and neck caused by cancer and trauma. This Atlas provides the surgeon with techniques for mastering different donor sites needed to find solutions to virtually every reconstruction problem. It provides detailed descriptions of the anatomy and harvesting techniques of the major regional and free-flap donor sites currently employed in head and neck reconstruction.

Book Peace Security and Post conflict Reconstruction in the Great Lakes Region of Africa

Download or read book Peace Security and Post conflict Reconstruction in the Great Lakes Region of Africa written by Lumumba-Kasongo, Tukumbi and published by CODESRIA. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Lakes region of Africa is characterized by protest politics, partial democratization, political illegitimacy and unstable economic growth. Many of the countries that are members of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) which are: Burundi, Angola, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Zambia, have experienced political violence and bloodshed at one time or another. While a few states have been advancing electoral democracy, environmental protection and peaceful state building, the overall intensity of violence in the region has led to civil wars, invasion, genocide, dictatorships, political instability, and underdevelopment. Efforts to establish sustainable peace, meaningful socio-economic development and participatory democracy have not been quite successful. Using various methodologies and paradigms, this book interrogates the complexity of the causes of these conflicts; and examines their impact and implications for socio-economic development of the region. The non-consensual actions related to these conflicts and imperatives of power struggles supported by the agents of ‘savage’ capitalism have paralysed efforts toward progress. The book therefore recommends new policy frameworks within regionalist lenses and neo-realist politics to bring about sustainable peace in the region.

Book Restructuring Networks in Post socialism

Download or read book Restructuring Networks in Post socialism written by Gernot Grabher and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about change in Central and Eastern Europe, and about how we think about social and economic change more generally. In contrast to the dominant 'transition framework' that examines organizational forms in Eastern Europe according to the degree to which they conform to, or depart from, the blueprints of already existing capitalist systems, this book examines the innovative character, born of necessity, in which actors in the post-socialist setting are restructuring organizations and institutions by redefining and recombining resources. Instead of thinking of these recombinations as accidental aberrations, the book explores their evolutionary potentials. The starting premise of Restructuring Networks in Post-Socialist Societies is that the actual unit of entrepreneurship is not the isolated individual personality but the social network that links firms and the actors within them. Drawing insight from evolutionary economics and from the new methods of network analysis, leading sociologists, economists, and political scientists report on changes in organizational forms in Hungary, Poland, Eastern Germany, Russia, and the Czech Republic.

Book Japan and the Reconstruction of East Asia

Download or read book Japan and the Reconstruction of East Asia written by D. Kelly and published by Springer. This book was released on 2001-12-17 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dominic Kelly has written a fascinating study of Japanese policies designed to lead to the reconstruction of East Asia. He presents a detailed picture of Japanese activity in East Asia in the areas of production, finance, security and 'knowledge', and maps out the historical context upon which this activity rests. In doing so, Kelly sheds light on the increasingly powerful but imperfectly understood phenomenon of regionalism. He goes on to identity the major fault line situated beneath both theoretical accounts of Japanese regionalism and 'real world' predictions of its success or failure.

Book Innovation Networks and Learning Regions

Download or read book Innovation Networks and Learning Regions written by James Simme and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-08-02 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Innovation, Networks and Learning Regions? address key issues of understanding in contemporary economic geography and local economic policy making in cities and regions in the advanced economies. Developing the idea that innovation is the primary driving force behind economic change and growth, the international range of contributors stress the importance of knowledge and information as the 'raw materials' of innovation. They examine the ways in which these elements may be acquired and linked through networks, and demonstrate that there are empirical examples of innovative areas which do not have highly developed networks yet appear to be relatively successful in terms of local economic growth. In so doing, they raise crucial questions about the ways in which regions or localities might be described as truly 'learning' areas, and about the sustainability of future economic and quality of life success based on innovation and high-technology.

Book Landscape Disturbance and Biodiversity in Mediterranean Type Ecosystems

Download or read book Landscape Disturbance and Biodiversity in Mediterranean Type Ecosystems written by Philip W. Rundel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human impact on natural landscapes through urbanization and agricultural expansion are becoming more and more dramatic and are the cause of serious environmental problems. This volume examines the effect of landscape disturbance on plant and animal diversity in the five mediterranean-climate regions of the world. It begins with three introductory chapters broadly reviewing the issues of landscape degradation. Further contributions describe regional land use conflicts in each of the five regions. Landscape disturbance and plant diversity, and landscape disturbance and animal diversity are treated in separate chapters. Four contributions deal with demography and ecophysiology in vegetation succession following disturbance. The volume closes with a consideration of the future addressing aspects of environmental politics.
