Book Regional Labor Market Adjustments in the United States

Download or read book Regional Labor Market Adjustments in the United States written by Mai Dao and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2014-11-25 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We examine patterns of regional adjustments to shocks in the US during the past four decades. We find that the response of interstate migration to relative labor market conditions has decreased, while the role of the unemployment rate as absorber of regional shocks has increased. However, the response of net migration to regional shocks is stronger during aggregate downturns and increased particularly during the Great Recession. We offer a potential explanation for the cyclical pattern of migration response based on the variation in consumption risk sharing.

Book Permanently Displaced Increasingly Disconnected Labor Force Participation in U S States and Metropolitan Areas

Download or read book Permanently Displaced Increasingly Disconnected Labor Force Participation in U S States and Metropolitan Areas written by Benjamin Hilgenstock and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2018-05-21 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States stands out among advanced economies with marked declines in labor force participation. National averages furthermore conceal considerable within-country heterogeneity. This paper explores regional differences to shed light on drivers of participation rates at the state and metropolitan area levels. It documents a broad-based decline, especially pronounced outside metropolitan areas. Using novel measures of local vulnerability to trade and technology it finds that metropolitan areas with higher exposures to routinization and offshoring experienced larger drops in participation in 2000-2016. Thus, areas with different occupational mixes can experience divergent labor market trajectories as a result of trade and technology.

Book Regional unemployment disparities in Germany

Download or read book Regional unemployment disparities in Germany written by Marcus Kunz and published by wbv Media GmbH & Company KG. This book was released on 2012-01-10 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book Perspectives on Regional Unemployment in Europe

Download or read book Perspectives on Regional Unemployment in Europe written by Mr.Paolo Mauro and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1999-05-17 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third stage of European Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) was implemented in January 1999 against the specter of persistently high unemployment in many of the participating countries. While the high European unemployment has received considerable attention, this new IMF staff study analyzes an equally important issue: the extent of regional unemployment disparities in certain countries. The paper focuses on large and persistent differences in regional unemployment rates within several European countries. The paper includes detailed case studies of two euro area countries where regional disparities in unemployment are striking- Italy and Spain. The studies emphasize that wages are unresponsive to local labor market conditions.

Book The evolution of regional labor market disparities

Download or read book The evolution of regional labor market disparities written by Daniel Werner and published by wbv Media GmbH & Company KG. This book was released on 2013-08-15 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
