Book Education Policy for the 21st Century

Download or read book Education Policy for the 21st Century written by Lawrence B. Joseph and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Amid widespread concern that schools are failing to prepare students for workforce participation, higher education, and the economic and technological challenges of the twenty-first century, public school reform efforts across the nation have focused increasingly on standards, performance, and accountability. A particularly critical question involves improving educational opportunities for children in poverty and for other ""at-risk"" students who represent an increasing proportion of public school enrollment.Education Policy for the 21st Century examines a range of key issues in standards-based education reform. Contributors focus on educational trends and issues in metropolitan Chicago, state education policy in Illinois, lessons of Chicago school reform, and standards-based, systemic reform in other states. The volume also includes chapters on standards and assessment in school accountability systems, effects of school spending on student achievement, and ""building-level"" obstacles to urban school reform.Presenting valuable data and a variety of perspectives, this book illuminates both the challenges and opportunities presented by standards-based education reform."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of creating safe spaces for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) students in the school environment cannot be overstated. Drawing on the expertise of researchers and practitioners, Creating Safe and Supportive Learning Environments provides a comprehensive examination of the topics most relevant for school professionals. The first section lays out the theoretical foundation and background school professionals need to understand the social and political trends that impact LGBTQ individuals, the development of sexual orientation and gender identity, risk and resilience factors, and the intersection of LGBTQ identity with other aspects of diversity. The second section explores topics critical for the development of safe, supportive school environments, including understanding legal and ethical mandates, training school personnel, addressing bullying and harassment, and developing inclusive classrooms. Special topics related to counseling LGBTQ students, supporting families of LGBTQ students, becoming an ally and advocate in the schools, and connecting with community resources are also covered. Book Classroom Killers Hallway Hostages

Download or read book Classroom Killers Hallway Hostages written by Kenneth S. Trump and published by Corwin Press. This book was released on 2000-06-23 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tragic school violence rocked the United States in the late 1990s and sent Americans scurrying to understand why these incidents occurred, how to prevent future incidents, and how to prepare to better manage those incidents which cannot be prevented. If there is anything positive that came out of these tragedies, it is unquestionably the placement of school safety at the top of the educational agenda and discussion list for school and community leaders nationwide. This book attempts to help sort out the political, administrative, and other dynamics so that readers can get to the "bottom line" of what really has been learned from these violent incidents This book, following Trump's successful first book, guides schools in being proactive in school security, and in handling the crisis and the media when events that cannot be anticipated do occur. These steps include being aware of early warning signs, educating the staff about the best responses, working with emergency personnel, handling the injured, handling with family members of the injured, and proactive strategies for the media spotlight.

Book Teacher Induction and Mentoring

Download or read book Teacher Induction and Mentoring written by Juanjo Mena and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-01 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book draws together various theoretical and research-based perspectives to examine the institutionalization of mentoring processes for beginning teachers. Teacher induction, defined as the guidance provided to new teachers, is increasingly gaining traction as a key stage in promoting quality education. Major efforts have been put into reducing transitional challenges from being a student teacher to a practicing teacher; optimizing professional relationships and socialization into school dynamics; and increasing teacher retention. Mentoring has been proven to add benefits in assisting beginning teachers during the early years of their teaching career, because it provides the required knowledge and skills to face uncertain school scenarios and the complexities of practice. However, teacher induction programs are not part of regular instruction in many countries. The lack of teacher training during the induction phase might result in lower levels of commitment, professional isolation, or even attrition. This book calls for more concrete mentoring processes for early career teachers, and questions how this can be put into practice.
