Book excerpt: Results are presented for height growth and survival at 10 and 15years from seed for 76 provenances of black spruce planted atfive test sites in Ontario. The best provenance overall was fromNipissing, Ont., but several western Ontario and Quebec sourcesalso performed well. Based on these results, it is suggestedthat early selection is not effective in black spruce, that localand regional sources are not necessarily superior to distantsources, but that specific provenances can be selected at age 15for use in improvement programmes.

The workshop included presentations highlighting the current status of conservation efforts and ideas and strategies for optimal in-situ and ex-situ conservation of forest genetic resources. Working group discussions were a major component of the workshop and were aimed at identifying gaps in current conservation efforts, conservation priorities, research initiatives to support conservation priorities, and promoting opportunities for increased collaborative efforts. A major output of the workshop was the development of a framework for a national strategy to focus on the sound management of Canada's forest genetic resources. This report presents the workshop proceedings, including the contributed papers on forest genetic conservation.

Book excerpt: Assisted migration of tree species populations, or seed sources, is one of few adaptive strategies available to mitigate the projected effects of climate change on the structure, productivity, and distribution of forest ecosystems. In this report, the authors present the goals and objectives of a study intiated in 2008 to assess the potential of assisted migration as an adaptation strategy to manage for climate change in Ontario. In support of this study, they conducted a literature search on assisted migration and genetic variation in climatic response of forest tree species, through which were identified several hundred related scientific and technical publications. Citations and keywords for publications of greatest significance to using assisted migration as a climate change adaptation strategy are presented in the accompanying bibliography.--Document.
