Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity (SCCOC) is one of the most prevalent tumors of the head and neck region. Despite improvements in treatment, the survival of patients with SCCOC has not significantly improved over the past several decades. Most frequently, treatment failure takes the form of local and regional recurrences, but as disease control in these areas improves, SCCOC treatment failures more commonly occur as distant metastasis. The presence of cervical lymph node metastasis is the most reliable adverse prognostic factor in patients with SCCOC, and extracapsular spread (ECS) of cervical lymph nodes metastasis is a particularly reliable predictor of regional and distant recurrence and death from disease. Decisions regarding elective and therapeutic management of cervical lymph node metastases are made mainly on clinical grounds as we cannot always predict cervical lymph node metastasis from the size and extent of invasion of the primary tumors. Therefore the treatment of the neck disease in the management of SCCOC remains controversial. The promise of using biomarker-based treatment decisions has yet to be fully realized due to our poor understanding of the mechanisms of regional and distant metastases of SCCOC. We will summarize the current status of investigations into SCCOC metastases and potential of these studies to impact basic research investigators and clinicians confronting SCCOC in the future.

Book Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma Cervical Lymphnode Metastasis

Download or read book Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma Cervical Lymphnode Metastasis written by Geetha N. T. and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-08 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The presence or absence of nodal metastasis has a great impact on the prognosis and survival of patients with head and neck cancer. The risk of occult metastasis is related to the method by which the lymph nodes are evaluated. It is possible to reduce the risk of undiagnosed metastasis with accurate imaging techniques and thus probably reduce the number of elective neck treatments. The aim of this study was to assess the accuracy of clinical palpation, CT Scan, Ultrasound and Ultrasound guided FNAC in prediction of lymph node metastasis in oral squamous cell carcinoma. our study came with the conclusion that the palpation, CT Scan and US are equally accurate but the US-FNAC is the most accurate technique in assessing the cervical lymphnode metastasis in oral squamous cell carcinoma.

Book Histological Typing of Cancer and Precancer of the Oral Mucosa

Download or read book Histological Typing of Cancer and Precancer of the Oral Mucosa written by J.J. Pindborg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book includes more clinical aspects and concentrates on cancer and precancer of the oral mucosa rather than attempting to cover all benign and malignant tumours of the oral and oropharyngeal tissue. One main emphasis is the significance of the clinical features of the various lesions discussed. Attention is also drawn to those conditions particular to the oral mucosa that may give rise to appearances which are important in differential diagnoses but can be misleading to those who do not have detailed knowledge of the tissue involved. The TNM-classification for malignant tumours of the lip and oral cavity is also included.

Book Metastatic Spread of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma to Level 2b A Retrospective Study

Download or read book Metastatic Spread of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma to Level 2b A Retrospective Study written by David Walker and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the high levels of occult lymph node metastasis in oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma, the vast majority of patients undergo selective neck dissection levels 1-4. Level 2b nodal metastasis, however, is uncommon. The current standard of treatment is dissection of level 2b as part of treatment for cancer but this has comorbidity associated with it which includes spinal accessory nerve dysfunction and related shoulder pain and disability. We aim to: 1.tTo describe the rate of metastasis to 2b from oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma2.tIdentify specific subsites, features of the primary and patient factors leading to higher metastasis rate3.tReview recommendations for 2b dissection in all oral cavity carcinoma.

Book excerpt: Oral cancer is frequently diagnosed late, when the disease has advanced with lesions that are large and deeply invasive and with metastasis to regional lymph nodes, leading to increased mortality. Moreover, late diagnosis and treatment often result in considerable morbidity of oral and maxillofacial structures and poor appearance and function following therapy. This book provides head and neck oncologists, oral oncologists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, medical oncologists, dentists and other members of dental teams furnishing supportive care with a systematic review of recent diagnostic and therapeutic advances in oral cancer. The various authoritative chapters are prepared by specialists who are active leaders in each basic and clinical field. All chapters address individual and collective issues that arise in managing oral cancer patients with difficult treatment problems and provide insight into the multiple valid management approaches available. The authors offer an extensive source of information about oral cancers and encourage the clinician to be flexible and innovative, giving physicians and medical personnel the background information to make the best, educated, responsible decisions for individual patients.

Download or read book TNM Atlas written by Bernd Spiessl and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confronted with myriads ofTs, N's and M's in the VICC TNM booklet, classifying a malignancy may seem to many cancer clini cians a tedious, dull and pedantic task. But then when he looks into the TNM-Atlas all of a sudden lifeless categories become vi vid images, challenging his know-how and his investigational skills. Prof. Dr. Brigit van der Werf-Messing, Chairman of the International TNM-Committee of the VICC. Preface In 1938 the League of Nations Health Organization published an "Atlas illustrating the division of cancer of the uterine cervix into four stages according to the anatomo-clinical extent of the growth". Since this work appeared, the idea of visual representation of the anatomical extent of malignant tumours at the different stages of their development has been repeatedly discussed. At its meeting in Copenhagen in July 1954, the VICC adopted as part of its programme "the realization of a clinical atlas". However, the time to do the planned illustration work was not ripe until the National Committees and international organiza tions had officially recognized the 28 classifications of malignant tumours at various sites as presented in the 3rd edition of the "TNM Booklet" (1978) edited by M. Harmer. This was all the more important since in 1980, in addition to the "Booklet", a "Brochure of Checklists" edited by A.H. Sellers was made available as a further aid in the practical application of the TNMsystem

  • Pages : 342 pages

Download or read book PET MR Imaging written by Rajesh Gupta and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an overview of the clinical applications of PET/MR imaging through a case-based format. Hybrid PET/MRI provides functional and anatomical information via one setting offering superior imaging quality with lower radiation dose being administered to the patient. The cases in this book focus on the use of this technique in the diagnosis of oncologic, neurologic, cardiovascular, infectious and inflammatory, and pediatric diseases. Each case is presented with the patient history, protocols, interpretation of findings, and pearls and pitfalls accompanied by high quality PET/MR images. The major strength of this book is the discussion of both MRI and PET findings pertinent to each particular case. It expands the discussion of oncologic applications of this modality through a variety of cases that highlight staging, treatment response, and follow up. Illustrating a spectrum of PET/MRI clinical applications, PET/MR Imaging: A Case-Based Approach is a valuable resource for radiologists, nuclear medicine physicians, and residents.
