Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection examines the evolution of regional inequality in Latin America in the long run. The authors support the hypothesis that the current regional disparities are principally the result of a long and complex process in which historical, geographical, economic, institutional, and political factors have all worked together. Lessons from the past can aid current debates on regional inequalities, territorial cohesion, and public policies in developing and also developed countries. In contrast with European countries, Latin American economies largely specialized in commodity exports, showed high levels of urbanization and high transports costs (both domestic and international). This new research provides a new perspective on the economic history of Latin American regions and offers new insights on how such forces interact in peripheral countries. In that sense, natural resources, differences in climatic conditions, industrial backwardness and low population density areas leads us to a new set of questions and tentative answers. This book brings together a group of leading American and European economic historians in order to build a new set of data on historical regional GDPs for nine Latin American countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. This transnational perspective on Latin American economic development process is of interest to researchers, students and policy makers.

Book Industrialization and Urbanization in Latin America

Download or read book Industrialization and Urbanization in Latin America written by Robert N Gwynne and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1985, Industrialization and Urbanization in Latin America focuses on the process of industrialisation in Latin America. The book links together the distinctive process of industrialisation to wider issues of urban and regional development in Latin America. The book looks in detail at the process of industrialisation in Latin America and the spatial ramifications in Latin American industrialisation; it argues that industrial growth and its geographical distribution is a principal cause of increasing disparities in income between regions within Latin American countries. This book will appeal to academics working in the field of urbanization and geography.

Book Struggle Against Dependence

Download or read book Struggle Against Dependence written by Eva Paus and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, most of the countries in Central America and the Caribbean share a common set of problems and structural characteristics that are the result of a similar history of economic development. The specific articulation of these characteristics and the severity of the economic problems in any particular country, of course, vary. In general, the economies of the region are small, agricultural export economies. Sugar, bananas, coffee, and meat have been the main export items for most countries, but natural resource exports-bauxite and oil-have played a key role for a few Caribbean countries.

Book Fragile Governance and Local Economic Development

Download or read book Fragile Governance and Local Economic Development written by Sergio Montero and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-17 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of our understanding of local economic development is based on large urban agglomerations as nodes of innovation and competitive advantage, connecting territories to global value chains. However, this framework cannot so easily be applied to peripheral regions and secondary cities in either the Global South or the North. This book proposes an alternative way of looking at local economic development based on the idea of fragile governance and three variables: associations and networks; learning processes; and leadership and conflict management in six Latin American peripheral regions. The case studies illustrate the challenges of governance in small and intermediate cities in Latin America, and showcase strategies that are being used to achieve a more resilient and territorial vision of local economic development. This book will be of interest to students and researchers of local economic development, urban and regional studies, and political economy in Latin America as well as to policy-makers and practitioners interested in local and regional economic development policy.
