Book Economy Wide Assessment of Regional Policies in India

Download or read book Economy Wide Assessment of Regional Policies in India written by Kakali Mukhopadhyay and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 2022-10-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the fast-changing policy arena of a country as diverse as India, gauging regional implications of policy shifts is critical but challenging. E3-India is a policy evaluation tool based on the internationally recognized E3ME global model, that allows for iterative quantification of multiple policy options within an integrated economy-energy-environment framework to support wellinformed progressive policy choices at the regional level. This book provides comprehensive coverage of creating and using E3 modeling framework for regional policy analysis, which is available in public domain for the first time in India, addressing existing flagship Government of India policies, including but not limited to the Make in India initiative, Digital India initiative, Automotive Mission Plan, Nationally Determined Commitments under the Paris agreement, and the Atmanirbhar Bharat relief package. These studies have been designed to provide in-depth and lucid insights regarding choices for resource allocation by policymakers, thereby serving as a comprehensive guide for evidence-based policymaking in India.

Book Electrifying India

Download or read book Electrifying India written by Sunila S. Kale and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2014-04-09 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the 20th century, electricity was considered to be the primary vehicle of modernity, as well as its quintessential symbol. In India, electrification was central to how early nationalists and planners conceptualized Indian development, and huge sums were spent on the project from then until now. Yet despite all this, sixty-five years after independence nearly 400 million Indians have no access to electricity. Electrifying India explores the political and historical puzzle of uneven development in India's vital electricity sector. In some states, nearly all citizens have access to electricity, while in others fewer than half of households have reliable electricity. To help explain this variation, this book offers both a regional and a historical perspective on the politics of electrification of India as it unfolded in New Delhi and three Indian states: Maharashtra, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh. In those parts of the countryside that were successfully electrified in the decades after independence, the gains were due to neither nationalist idealism nor merely technocratic plans, but rather to the rising political influence and pressure of rural constituencies. In looking at variation in how public utilities expanded over a long period of time, this book argues that the earlier period of an advancing state apparatus from the 1950s to the 1980s conditioned in important ways the manner of the state's retreat during market reforms from the 1990s onward.

Book Liberalization Growth and Regional Disparities in India

Download or read book Liberalization Growth and Regional Disparities in India written by Madhusudan Ghosh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-01-18 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upon the backdrop of impressive progress made by the Indian economy during the last two decades after the large-scale economic reforms in the early 1990s, this book evaluates the performance of the economy on some income and non-income dimensions of development at the national, state and sectoral levels. It examines regional economic growth and inequality in income originating from agriculture, industry and services. In view of the importance of the agricultural sector, despite its declining share in gross domestic product, it evaluates the performance of agricultural production and the impact of agricultural reforms on spatial integration of food grain markets. It studies rural poverty, analyzing the trend in employment, the trickle-down process and the inclusiveness of growth in rural India. It also evaluates the impact of microfinance, as an instrument of financial inclusion, on the socio-economic conditions of rural households. Lastly, it examines the relative performance of fifteen major states of India in terms of education, health and human development. An important feature of the book is that it approaches these issues, applying rigorously advanced econometric methods, and focusing primarily on their regional disparities during the post-reform period vis-à-vis the pre-reform period. It offers important results to guide policies for future development.

This book was released on 2022-09-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is more conducive to economic development of a nation-specialisation or diversification? Are regions within a developing economy experiencing divergence or convergence as they embark on high growth path? The learnings from the India story has valuable lessons on such aspects for other developing countries and so this book is a deep dive into the regional economy of India. A region's ability to experience growth is to a large extent determined by its ability to attract either industry or people. This phenomenon is known as agglomeration and affects concentration of firms, development of industrial hubs, policies towards special economic zones, flows of labour and capital, formation and growth of cities. Given the size and diversity within each state in India there is an urgent case for going one step below to identify homogeneous units at a sub state level, viz., NSS regions, something which this book seeks to address.

Book Land Use Dynamics in a Developing Economy

Download or read book Land Use Dynamics in a Developing Economy written by Shahab Fazal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-10-11 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, India still remains a rural agricultural country although the share of urban population has also increased but these figures do not tell the whole story. There are evidences that urban growth is dispersed and urban sprawl promotes the spread of urban land use into the rural-urban fringe. Here the attempt is to investigate the land transformation and the driving forces which were influencing the land transformation. The present study was done on peri urban interface of Aligarh city, a relatively small city, but as other north Indian cities, it is also expanding rapidly. Moreover, it too is surrounded by a populous rural area with productive and rich agricultural hinterland. Such conditions give rise to many conflicts and mutually beneficial complementarities in the rural and urban spheres. The result shows that the demand for land is high which results in informal urban development fulfilling the requirements of many of the city’s residents. Every piece of land is a tradable commodity, and the pursuit of short-term profits is the predominant ethic. The actors in PUI are strong because it is characterized by intermixing of rural and urban activities and interests as well as the number of actors are greater than in any other area. .

Book Reintegrating India with the World Economy

Download or read book Reintegrating India with the World Economy written by T. N. Srinivasan and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2003-05-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After nearly five decades of insulation from world markets, state controls, and slow growth, India embarked in 1991 on a process of liberalization of controls and progressive integration with the global economy in an effort to put its economy on a path of rapid and sustained growth. Despite major changes in the government since then, the thrust on reforms has been maintained. According to the World Bank, only 10 out of 145 countries had more rapid growth than India at over 6 percent per year in the 1990s and two had the same as India's. In this study, T.N. Srinivasan and Suresh D. Tendulkar analyze the economics and politics of India's recent and growing integration with the world economy. They argue that this process has to be nurtured and accelerated if India is to eradicate its poverty and take its rightful place in the global economic system. The study covers the historical roots and the political economy of India's late integration; domestic and external constraints on integration; external capital inflows including foreign direct investment; and India's emerging comparative advantage in the information technology industry and services, particularly computer software. The final chapter offers policy recommendations including proposals that India could make at the ongoing Doha Round of multilateral trade negotiations.
