Book Characteristics of the Weak Rock at Regional Connector Project in Los Angeles

Download or read book Characteristics of the Weak Rock at Regional Connector Project in Los Angeles written by H. Yang and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Regional Connector Transit Corridor project provides a 3.0 km long connection for existing light rail transit lines in downtown Los Angeles, California. The project involves twin bored tunnels, cut-and-cover tunnels, three deep stations and one sequential excavation cavern that will encounter the Fernando Formation bedrock, which underlines the alluvium. The Fernando Formation consists of a poorly bedded to massive clayey siltstone to silty claystone that is poorly cemented and extremely weak to very weak per ISRM (1978). This paper presents the geotechnical engineering characteristics of the formation based on field investigation and laboratory testing.

Book From Fundamentals to Applications in Geotechnics

Download or read book From Fundamentals to Applications in Geotechnics written by D. Manzanal and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2015-12-11 with total page 3344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work of geotechnical engineers contributes to the creation of safe, economic and pleasant spaces to live, work and relax all over the world. Advances are constantly being made, and the expertise of the profession becomes ever more important with the increased pressure on space and resources. This book presents the proceedings of the 15th Pan-American Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (XV PCSMGE), held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in November 2015. This conference, held every four years, is an important opportunity for international experts, researchers, academics, professionals and geo-engineering companies to meet and exchange ideas and research findings in the areas of soil mechanics, rock mechanics, and their applications in civil, mining and environmental engineering. The articles are divided into nine sections: transportation geotechnics; in-situ testing; geo-engineering for energy and sustainability; numerical modeling in geotechnics; foundations and ground improvement; unsaturated soil behavior; embankments, dams and tailings; excavations and tunnels; and geo-risks, and cover a wide spectrum of issues from fundamentals to applications in geotechnics. This book will undoubtedly represent an essential reference for academics, researchers and practitioners in the field of soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering. In this proceedings, approximately 65% of the contributions are in English, and 35% of the contributions are in Spanish or Portuguese.

Book Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference 2021 Proceedings

Download or read book Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference 2021 Proceedings written by Jarrett E. Carlson and published by Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration. This book was released on 2021-06-06 with total page 1250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every two years, industry leaders and practitioners from around the world gather at the Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC), the authoritative program for the tunneling profession, to learn about the most recent advances and breakthroughs in this unique field. The information presented helps professionals keep pace with the ever-changing and growing tunneling industry. This book includes the full text of 106 papers presented at the 2021 conference. Though the tunneling industry continues to develop both technically and contractually, one notable adaptation of the last two years has been the onset and management of COVID-19. The hallmarks of tunneling professionals include adaptability, resiliency, optimism, and management of change. These are traits that have been recently put to an entirely new challenge over the last year or so. We have truly witnessed why what we do is deemed “essential” infrastructure. The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted each of us, personally and professionally, and while times have been hard, we are fortunate to work in a field that is able to meet the challenge and thrive thereafter. Congratulations are in order to everyone in our industry for keeping the planning and development of projects moving forward and for maintaining safe and productive worksites in these challenging times.

Book Trains Buses People

Download or read book Trains Buses People written by Christof Spieler and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2018-10-23 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the best transit cities in the US? The best Bus Rapid Transit lines? The most useless rail transit lines? The missed opportunities? In the US, the 25 largest metropolitan areas and many smaller cities have fixed guideway transit—rail or bus rapid transit. Nearly all of them are talking about expanding. Yet discussions about transit are still remarkably unsophisticated. To build good transit, the discussion needs to focus on what matters—quality of service (not the technology that delivers it), all kinds of transit riders, the role of buildings, streets and sidewalks, and, above all, getting transit in the right places. Christof Spieler has spent over a decade advocating for transit as a writer, community leader, urban planner, transit board member, and enthusiast. He strongly believes that just about anyone—regardless of training or experience—can identify what makes good transit with the right information. In the fun and accessible Trains, Buses, People: An Opinionated Atlas of US Transit, Spieler shows how cities can build successful transit. He profiles the 47 metropolitan areas in the US that have rail transit or BRT, using data, photos, and maps for easy comparison. The best and worst systems are ranked and Spieler offers analysis of how geography, politics, and history complicate transit planning. He shows how the unique circumstances of every city have resulted in very different transit systems. Using appealing visuals, Trains, Buses, People is intended for non-experts—it will help any citizen, professional, or policymaker with a vested interest evaluate a transit proposal and understand what makes transit effective. While the book is built on data, it has a strong point of view. Spieler takes an honest look at what makes good and bad transit and is not afraid to look at what went wrong. He explains broad concepts, but recognizes all of the technical, geographical, and political difficulties of building transit in the real world. In the end,Trains, Buses, People shows that it is possible with the right tools to build good transit.
