Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The numerical model documented here, RCPWAVE, can be used to solve wave propagation problems over arbitrary bathymetry. The governing equations solved in the model are the mild slope equation for linear, monochromatic waves, and the equation specifying irrotationality of the wave phase function gradient. Finite difference approximations of these equations are solved to predict wave propagation outside the surf zone. Inside the breaker zone, an empirical method is used to predict wave transformation. This method is based on a hydraulic jump representation of the entire surf zone. The model is verified using laboratory and field data. A user's manual section is provided to aid potential users. This documentation describes job control language files, job submission procedures, sample input and output files, and execution costs.

Book Coastal and Inlet Processes Numerical Modeling System for Oregon Inlet North Carolina

Download or read book Coastal and Inlet Processes Numerical Modeling System for Oregon Inlet North Carolina written by S. Rao Vemulakonda and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oregon Inlet is a large tidal inlet through the barrier island system of North Carolina. In 1970, Congress authorized the Manteo (Shallowbag) Bay project which had provisions to stabilize Oregon Inlet with two jetties, deepen the ocean bar channel to 20 ft, and bypass across the inlet sand intercepted by the jetties. This report describes the results of a numerical study to consider coastal and inlet processes in the region surrounding the inlet under existing and planned project conditions. To accomplish the objectives of the study, a system of numerical models called Coastal and Inlet Processes (CIP) Numerical Modeling System was developed. It included models for wave propagation, wave-induced currents and setup, sediment transport within and beyond the surf zone, and profile response (onshore-offshore transport). Results from a separate study on numerical simulation of tides and storm surge for Oregon Inlet were utilized in the present investigation. Originator-supplied keywords: Coastal processes, Dredge disposal Hydraulic structures--evaluation, Hydrodynamics-mathematical models, Inlets, Numerical models, Numerical simulation, Oregon Inlet (North Carolina), Sediment transport, Storm surge, Tides, Waves, Wave-induced currents.

Book Coastal and Inlet Processes Numerical Modeling System

Download or read book Coastal and Inlet Processes Numerical Modeling System written by S. R. Vemulakonda and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the improved understanding of coastal processes and the availability of very high speed computers and efficient computation techniques, it is now economically feasible to use numerical modeling systems to study the impact of large-scale engineering works on coastal processes. Such systems have the advantage that, unlike physical hydraulic and movable-bed models, once the systems are built and tested, they can be applied to different prototype sites with much less additional effort and cost. Also, they can be used to examine several different problems such as the effects of coastal structures, disposal of dredged material, modification of navigation channels, and estimating maintenance dredging requirements. In this paper, the development of one such modeling system at the US Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station (WES), Coastal Engineering Research Center (CERC), is described. The system, known as the Coastal and Inlet Processes (CIP) Modeling System, was developed in response to the long-term needs of the Corps of engineers.

Book Guide to Process Based Modeling of Lakes and Coastal Seas

Download or read book Guide to Process Based Modeling of Lakes and Coastal Seas written by Anders Omstedt and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of Guide to Process Based Modeling of Lakes and Coastal Seas brings the modeling up to date, taking into account multiple stressors acting on aquatic systems. The combination of acidification and increasing amounts of anoxic waters associated with eutrophication puts severe stress on the marine environment. The detection and attribution of anthropogenic changes in coastal seas are therefore crucial and transparent modeling tools are increasingly important. Modeling the marine CO2–O2 system makes systematic studies on climate change and eutrophication possible and is fundamental for understanding the Earth system. This second edition also includes new sections on detection and attribution and on modeling future changes, as well as improved exercises, updated software, and datasets. This unique book will stimulate students and researchers to develop their modeling skills and make model codes and data transparent to other research groups. It uses the general equation solver PROBE to introduce process-oriented numerical modeling and to build understanding of the subject step by step. The equation solver has been used in many applications, particularly in Sweden and Finland with their numerous lakes, archipelago seas, fjords, and coastal zones. It has also been used for process studies in the Polar Seas and the Mediterranean Sea and the approach is suitable for applications in many other environmental applications. Guide to Process Based Modeling of Lakes and Coastal Seas: • is a unique teaching tool for systematic learning of aquatic modeling; • approaches lake and ocean modeling from a new angle; • introduces aquatic numerical modeling using a process-based approach; • enables the thorough understanding of the physics and biogeochemistry of lakes and coastal seas; • provides software, datasets, and algorithms needed to reproduce all calculations and results in the book; • provides a number of creative and stimulating exercises with solutions; • addresses the interaction between climate change and eutrophication and is a good basis for learning Earth System Sciences.

Book Advances in Coastal Modeling

Download or read book Advances in Coastal Modeling written by V.C. Lakhan and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2003-10-24 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book unifies and enhances the accessibility of contemporary scholarly research on advances in coastal modeling. A comprehensive spectrum of innovative models addresses the wide diversity and multifaceted aspects of coastal research on the complex natural processes, dynamics, interactions and responses of the coastal supersystem and its associated subsystems. The twenty-one chapters, contributed by internationally recognized coastal experts from fourteen countries, provide invaluable insights on the recent advances and present state-of-the-art knowledge on coastal models which are essential for not only illuminating the governing coastal process and various characteristics, but also for understanding and predicting the dynamics at work in the coastal system. One of the unique strengths of the book is the impressive and encompassing presentation of current functional and operational coastal models for all those concerned with and interested in the modeling of seas, oceans and coasts. In addition to chapters modeling the dynamic natural processes of waves, currents, circulatory flows and sediment transport there are also chapters that focus on the modeling of beaches, shorelines, tidal basins and shore platforms. The substantial scope of the book is further strengthened with chapters concentrating on the effects of coastal structures on nearshore flows, coastal water quality, coastal pollution, coastal ecological modeling, statistical data modeling, and coupling of coastal models with geographical information systems.
