Book International Conference on River Regime

Download or read book International Conference on River Regime written by W. R. White and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprises the proceedings of the International Conference on River Regime held at Wallingford, England, May 1988. Describes recent advances in river regime theory, including full discussion of the newly-developed analytical approach. This new approach employs a theoretical description of the dominant fluvial process rather than a purely empirical approach. Also gives an account of the increasing range of application of regime theory, from canals to sand bed streams and rivers, and, more recently, to gravel bed rivers (the latter application still being refined). Provides the latest laboratory data and field data, addresses both empirical and analytical approaches, and looks at channel form, meandering, and many additional factors in the growing science of river regime theory.

Book Handbook of Hydraulic Geometry

Download or read book Handbook of Hydraulic Geometry written by Vijay Singh and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-12-08 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydraulic geometry describes the relations between stable channel characteristics and discharge and adjustments made by a stream in response to changes in river discharge and sediment load. This book introduces hydraulic geometry and discusses different theories and their applications in river engineering, thus providing a comprehensive summary for hydraulic engineers, as well as graduate students and researchers in fluvial geomorphology and hydraulic and environmental engineering. Topics covered include the basis of power form of hydraulic geometry relations, validity and stability of power relations, state and assumption of equilibrium, variability of exponents, variation of channel width and velocity, and the effect of stream size and river channel patterns.

Book Agrarian Landscapes in Transition

Download or read book Agrarian Landscapes in Transition written by Charles Redman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-07-18 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agrarian Landscapes in Transition researches human interaction with the earth. With hundreds of acres of agricultural land going out of production every day, the introduction, spread, and abandonment of agriculture represents the most pervasive alteration of the Earth's environment for several thousand years. What happens when humans impose their spatial and temporal signatures on ecological regimes, and how does this manipulation affect the earth and nature's desire for equilibrium? Studies were conducted at six Long Term Ecological Research sites within the US, including New England, the Appalachian Mountains, Colorado, Michigan, Kansas, and Arizona. While each site has its own unique agricultural history, patterns emerge that help make sense of how our actions have affected the earth, and how the earth pushes back. The book addresses how human activities influence the spatial and temporal structures of agrarian landscapes, and how this varies over time and across biogeographic regions. It also looks at the ecological and environmental consequences of the resulting structural changes, the human responses to these changes, and how these responses drive further changes in agrarian landscapes. The time frames studied include the ecology of the earth before human interaction, pre-European human interaction during the rise and fall of agricultural land use, and finally the biological and cultural response to the abandonment of farming, due to complete abandonment or a land-use change such as urbanization.

Book River Mechanics

Download or read book River Mechanics written by M.S. Yalin and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the mechanism and behaviour of rivers flowing in alluvium is a most challenging subject. The conditions presented by a natural river are far from simple: the flow varies with location and time, and the granular structure and cohesive properties of the alluvium are rarely homogeneous. River Mechanics addresses this subject and aims to improve the understanding and formulation of the fluvial processes which occur in rivers. Topics covered include the interpretation of turbulence in the light of recent advances in the field, and current thinking on the regime concept.
