The results of cyclic combustion/regeneration experiments on three limestones are reported. The reactivity of a low-reactivity limestone, Germany Valley, did not change significantly during cyclic combustion/regeneration. Studies of a high-reactivity limestone, Greer, at lower regeneration temperatures (1050/sup 0/C) indicated an apparently better performance than at 1100/sup 0/C. The sorbent utilization of type 2203 limestone in a three-cycle experiment was similar to that of Greer. The results of studies of a process for the recovery of elemental sulfur from SO/sub 2/ involving reaction with fly ash or coal ash-coal combinations are reported. The residual carbon in the fly ash was found to be an effective reductant for the SO/sub 2/ and high-purity sulfur was obtained. Regeneration of spent limestone sorbent in externally fired rotary kilns was accomplished, but only under conditions that resulted in rapid attack of the kiln materials by SO/sub 2.

Book excerpt: The objectives of this program are to develop an economically and environmentally acceptable process for the regeneration of the partly sulfated product of a fluidized-bed coal combustor, to obtain the design data needed for the construction of larger regenerators, and to determine the possible corrosive effect on metallic alloys of sulfation acceleration agents added to the limestone sorbent. A regeneration process model has been developed; the model has been used to investigate the effects of the main variables on regenerator size and performance and to estimate the economic feasibility of regeneration. The results of an investigation of a regeneration process using a rotary kiln in place of a fluidized bed are reported. An atmospheric pressure FBC was placed into operation to study the corrosion of metallic alloys by limestone treated with various sulfation accelerators such as NaCl or CaCl/sub 2/. The results of corrosion studies carried out in a laboratory-scale facility are reported.

The results of a cyclic combustion (sulfation)--regeneration study of Germany Valley limestone are reported. A thermodynamic analysis was made of the reductive decomposition regeneration process to examine the interrelationship of: SO/sub 2/ concentration in the off-gas, temperature, pressure, oxidizing/reducing conditions, coal/sorbent ratio, feed gas oxygen concentration, and sorbent composition. A literature review was made on processes for the conversion of SO/sub 2/ to elemental sulfur. Operational characteristics are reported for a process development-scale atmospheric fluidized-bed combustor which has been put into use for corrosion studies, and the exposure conditions for the first three 100-h corrosion runs are reported. Limestone used in these runs included untreated limestone and limestone treated with 0.3 mol % CaCl/sub 2/ or 0.5 mol % NaCl.

This report presents information on: a thermodynamic analysis of the one-step reductive decomposition regeneration process, an evaluation of a regeneration process using a rotary kiln, and the use of fly ash for the reduction of gaseous SO/sub 2/ elemental sulfur. In the previous year, studies of the effect of limestone sulfation-enhancement agents (e.g., NaCl and CaCl/sub 2/) on corrosion of FBC structural materials were described. Results of these tests are reported here.
