This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English novelist Anthony Trollope described the Western District squatters in the 1870s as 'plentiful, proud, prejudiced, given to hospitality, impatient of contradiction a thoughtful on the future, and above all, conscious-perhaps a little too conscious-of their own importance a forty thousand sheep cannot be shorn without a piano; twenty thousand is the lowest number that renders napkins at dinner imperative'. But these squatters were also speculators and investors, whose entrepreneuship built great wealth and elaborate mansions. Around their Georgian and Victorian homes they created an antipodean England, employing the best-known landscape architects of the day. The Western District today retains most of the renowned homesteads and gardens that date from these times. This fascinating and beautiful book-sequel to the bestselling Great Properties of Country Victoria-takes us into the private world of thirteen more notable properties. Through their histories we follow their fortunes-extraordinary tales of risk and reward-and through the photographs see the splendour of great homes that have been lovingly maintained and carefully restored. It is a tribute to the past and present owners who have so painstakingly preserved their properties' heritage.

Download or read book Country Houses of Tasmania written by Georgia Warner and published by Allen & Unwin. This book was released on 2009 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tucked into the folds of Tasmania's wild landscape is an array of beautiful historic homes from a time when life was simpler and grander - and perhaps more of an adventure. The early pastoral settlers of Tasmania were a hardy and eccentric bunch: young men out to make their fortunes; struggling families hoping for a fresh start; and feisty women wanting to make their own mark. From the landed gentry to convicts who'd won their freedom, these men and women created an antipodean England in the elaborate Georgian and Victorian mansions they built. Alice Bennett and Georgia Warner have collected together the stories of these houses, and of the people who have passed through them over the years. As the new colony thrived, fortunes were made and many of the homes featured in Country Houses of Tasmania signalled the New World's wealth with their sumptuous furnishings - from Carrara marble to Italian porcelain, Minton caustic tiles, the best Berlin metal and French moire wallpaper. In the twenty-first century these houses which have been largely lost on the Australian mainland - remain as brick-and-mortar reminders of the past. Many of today's owners are descendants of the original builders, and all are dedicated to the preservation of that hidden architectural heritage. 'The homes you enter in this book are private. Unless you are part of their inner circle you might not have even known they existed,' write Georgia Warner and Alice Bennett. So the next time you glimpse a Georgian chimneypot over the top of a high hedge in rural Tasmania, or view a stately pile off in the distance down a tree-lined drive, open Country Houses of Tasmania and you will know what rare treasures lie inside.
Download or read book Ernest Cole House of Bondage written by and published by Aperture. This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the frankest books ever done on South Africa. -Robert Cromie, Chicago Tribune First published in the US in 1967 and in Britain in 1968, House of Bondage presented images from South Africa that shocked the world. The young African photographer Ernest Cole had left his country at 26 to find an audience for his stunning exposure of the system of racial dominance known as apartheid. In 185 photographs, Cole's book showed from the vantage point of the oppressed how the system closely regulated and controlled the lives of the black majority. He saw every aspect of this oppression with a searching eye and a passionate heart. House of Bondage is a milestone in the history of documentary photography, even though it was immediately banned in South Africa. In a Chicago Tribune review, Robert Cromie described it as "one of the frankest books ever done on South Africa--with photographs by a native of that country who would be most unwise to attempt to return for some years." Cole died in exile in 1990 as the regime was collapsing, never knowing when his portrait of his homeland would finally find its way home. Not until the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg mounted enlarged pages of the book on its walls in 2001 were his people able to view these pictures, which are as powerful and provocative today as they were 50 years ago. Ernest Cole was born near Pretoria, South Africa, in 1940. Leaving school at 17 to become a photographer, he secured staff jobs and freelance assignments for newspapers and magazines for black people--honing his skills with a correspondence course from the New York Institute of Photography. Inspired by Henri Cartier-Bresson's book The People of Moscow, in 1960 Cole embarked on a project to document the lives of his people, which resulted in House of Bondage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deneys Reitz was 17 when the Anglo-Boer War broke out in 1899. Reitz describes that he had no hatred of the British people, but "as a South African, one had to fight for one's country." Reitz had learned to ride, shoot and swim almost as soon as he could walk, and the skills and endurance he had acquired during those years were to be made full use of during the war. He fought with different Boer Commandos, where each Commando consisted mainly of farmers on horseback, using their own horses and guns.Commando describes the tumult through the eyes of a warrior in the saddle. Reitz was fortunate to be present at nearly every one of the major battles of the war. Commando is a straightforward narrative that describes an extraordinary adventure and brings us a vivid, unforgettable picture of mobile guerrilla warfare, especially later in the war as General Smuts and men like Reitz fought on, braving heat, cold, rain, lack of food, clothing and boots, tiring horses.

Download or read book Alan I W Frank House written by and published by Rizzoli Publications. This book was released on 2019-11-12 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to feature this modernist masterpiece, one of Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer's most important residential commissions. Offering a rare opportunity to explore the largest and most luxurious house designed by Walter Gropius, founder of the Bauhaus, and Marcel Breuer, leading architect and furniture designer of the twentieth century, this beautifully designed volume celebrates the Alan I W Frank House in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Built in 1939-40, the house embodies the Bauhaus "total work of art" philosophy, with Gropius and Breuer having designed every aspect of the building and its site. Illustrations including new and archival images and the architects' plans and sketches highlight an exquisite balance of proportions and colors. Accompanying essays place this house firmly within the American modernist canon just as the Bauhaus celebrates its one-hundreth anniversary in 2019.
