Book Local Music Scenes and Globalization

Download or read book Local Music Scenes and Globalization written by Thomas Burkhalter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-16 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers the first in-depth study of experimental and popular music scenes in Beirut, looking at musicians working towards a new understanding of musical creativity and music culture in a country that is dominated by mass-mediated pop music, and propaganda. Burkhalter studies the generation of musicians born at the beginning of the Civil War in the Lebanese capital, an urban and cosmopolitan center with a long tradition of cultural activities and exchanges with the Arab world, Europe, the US, and the former Soviet Union. These Lebanese rappers, rockers, death-metal, jazz, and electro-acoustic musicians and free improvisers choose local and transnational forms to express their connection to the broader musical, cultural, social, and political environment. Burkhalter explores how these musicians organize their own small concerts for ‘insider’ audiences, set up music labels, and network with like-minded musicians in Europe, the US, and the Arab world. Several key tracks are analyzed with methods from ethnomusicology, and popular music studies, and contextualized through interviews with the musicians. Discussing key references from belly dance culture (1960s), psychedelic rock in Beirut (1970s), the noises of the Lebanese Civil war (1975-1990), and transnational Pop-Avant-Gardes and World Music 2.0 networks, this book contributes to the study of localization and globalization processes in music in an increasingly digitalized and transnational world. At the core, this music from Beirut challenges "ethnocentric" perceptions of "locality" in music. It attacks both "Orientalist" readings of the Arab world, the Middle East, and Lebanon, and the focus on musical "difference" in Euro-American music and culture markets. On theoretical grounds, this music is a small, but passionate attempt to re-shape the world into a place where "modernity" is not "euro-modernity" or "euro-american modernity," but where possible new configurations of modernity exist next to each other.

Book My Dear Friend

Download or read book My Dear Friend written by Owen Knowles and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2008 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sequel to A Portrait in Letters: Correspondence to and about Joseph Conrad (Rodopi, 1995), this volume collects and annotates letters to Joseph Conrad by his family, friends, admirers, and publishers. An indispensable companion to the writer's own letters, it restores the quality of exchange, interaction, and debate that belongs to a major correspondence. It also leads to a fuller, more rounded picture of Conrad in his personal and professional dealings: both of the mutualities and rituals that underpinned his close friendships and of the terms underlying his mutual disagreements with others. Familiar names are here – Arnold Bennett, John Galsworthy, Edward Garnett, Ford Madox Ford, Bertrand Russell, and H. G. Wells – although in largely unfamiliar form, through unpublished or inaccessible materials. Another notable feature of the volume is the newly recovered correspondence relating to the implementation, by Henry Newbolt and William Rothenstein, of the Royal Bounty Fund grant awarded during one of Conrad's most severe financial crises (1904–06). An essential resource for the scholar, this vivid collection can also be read with pleasure by the general reader for the light it throws on Conrad the man and writer and the rich context in which he moved.

This book was released on 2023-12-19 with total page 904 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 'Raison et Sensibilité / Sense and Sensibility - Edition bilingue: français - anglais', Jane Austen masterfully weaves a tale of two sisters, Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, as they navigate the complexities of love, societal expectations, and personal growth. The novel is written in Austen's signature style, combining wit, humor, and incisive social commentary. Set in the early 19th century, the book provides a window into the lives of the English gentry and explores themes of class, gender, and the limitations imposed by society. The bilingual edition allows readers to appreciate both the original English text and the French translation, highlighting the universal appeal of Austen's work. Her legacy as a trailblazing female author continues to endure, making her a celebrated figure in English literature. Austen's enduring relevance and captivating storytelling make this bilingual edition a must-read for fans of her work and newcomers alike.

  • Pages : 278 pages

Download or read book Autumn written by Philippe Delerm and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 1999-02 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [This book is written in French.] Philippe Delerm draws us into the insane world of the pre-raphaelite painters. A spellbinding adventure in which characters tear each other apart. A destiny in chiaroscuro. It makes us wonder whether splendor is the height of misery, and whether the resort to artificial Edens is simply a mask for other troubles.
