Firmly rooted in the landscapes of the Midwest, Kooser’s poetry succeeds in finding the emotional resonances within the ordinary. Kooser’s language of quiet intensity trains itself on the intricacies of human relationships, as well as the animals and objects that make up our days. As Poetry magazine said of his work, “Kooser documents the dignities, habits, and small griefs of daily life, our hunger for connection, our struggle to find balance.” From “March 2”: Patchy clouds and windy. All morning our house has been flashing in and out of shade like a signal, and far across the waves of grass a neighbor’s house has answered, offering help. Ted Kooser is the author of eleven collections of poetry, including Delights & Shadows, which won the Pulitzer Prize. He served as the Poet Laureate of the United States, and is a visiting professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Download or read book How Luther Regards Moses written by Miles Hopgood and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2023-06-12 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though undertreated by modern scholars, Martin Luther's lectures on Deuteronomy are critical to understanding his theological development as an exegete and also the course of the Reformation in the wake of Luther's return from the Wartburg in 1522. In these lectures, Luther engages deeply with Moses, whom he sees as an author, prophet, and ruler. These three ways of regarding Moses allow Luther to forge a new approach to the Mosaic law, shaping his response to what he perceives as the evangelical legalism of Andreas Karlstadt and Thomas Müntzer. By shedding light on these exegetical principles and connecting these lectures to surrounding events, Miles Hopgood brings new clarity as to why Luther broke with Karlstadt and the nature of his dispute with Müntzer, demonstrates the importance of the Hebrew Bible in shaping Luther's mature exegesis, and opens the door for fresh perspectives not only on the events of 1521-1525 but Luther's entire career as interpreter of scripture.

Book The Source of Self Regard

Download or read book The Source of Self Regard written by Toni Morrison and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2020-01-14 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • Here is the Nobel Prize winner in her own words: a rich gathering of her most important essays and speeches, spanning four decades that "speaks to today’s social and political moment as directly as this morning’s headlines” (NPR). These pages give us her searing prayer for the dead of 9/11, her Nobel lecture on the power of language, her searching meditation on Martin Luther King Jr., her heart-wrenching eulogy for James Baldwin. She looks deeply into the fault lines of culture and freedom: the foreigner, female empowerment, the press, money, “black matter(s),” human rights, the artist in society, the Afro-American presence in American literature. And she turns her incisive critical eye to her own work (The Bluest Eye, Sula, Tar Baby, Jazz, Beloved, Paradise) and that of others. An essential collection from an essential writer, The Source of Self-Regard shines with the literary elegance, intellectual prowess, spiritual depth, and moral compass that have made Toni Morrison our most cherished and enduring voice.

Book Warm Regards Inspiration 365

Download or read book Warm Regards Inspiration 365 written by Elvie Guthrie-Lewis and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Devotional - Warm Regards, is full of Elvie Guthrie-Lewis' life stories. As her friends, we recognize ourselves in some of her writing; and in what she writes, we are further blessed by the words she has chosen to tell our stories. Our stories: our successes, and even some of our sorrows, are being used to glorify our Lord and Savior. What a blessing. What a joy. What an honor. Each meditative story concludes with Words of Love. As you read, you can imagine what Jesus is trying to say to each of us, what He is trying to teach us in His loving, contemplative way. There is no judgment, just stories to which we can each relate; stories that will warm our hearts; stories that will nurture us, and encourage us, as we grow in our faith. Elvie Guthrie-Lewis was born to Maurice and Ernestine Guthrie, on the beautiful Island of Jamaica, in the West Indies. She is the last of four children. At an early age, Elvie dreamed of becoming a teacher and a writer. She was an avid reader as a child, and even had her bungalow designed for writing, like some writers she had read about. She achieved her first goal to become a teacher, when she graduated from Shortwood Teachers' College in 1970. Elvie taught at the high school level for eight and a half years and spent two and a half years with the Jamaican Movement for the Advancement of Literacy (JAMAL) as a teacher trainer. Elvie immigrated to the United States in 1982 to advance her studies, and earned BS Degrees in Nutrition and Dietetics, and Institution Management. She went on to earn a MS Degree in Education; all from Alcorn State University. Elvie is a Registered Dietitian, a Certified Public Manager, an Alumni of the South Central Public Health Leadership Institute (Tulane University), and the Rotary Leadership Academy. She is married to Felton Lewis of New Orleans, and they live in Mississippi.

Book Regards From Serbia

Download or read book Regards From Serbia written by Aleksandar Zograf and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the NATO bombs fell on his hometown of Pan♯|evo in 1999, Serbian cartoonist Aleksandar Zograf used his diary comics and e-mail to reach out to the world and offer a glimpse at the effects of the attacks. Over the weeks and months of the war, Zograf documented not only how the bombings shattered the lives of his friends and neighbors, but also how the routine of daily life remained unchanged. The most recent attacks on Pancevo's oil refinery are contrasted with the latest local soccer matches -- and American propaganda flyers are as likely to fall from the sky as American comics are to arrive in the mail. In today's ratings-driven era of globetrotting correspondents and embedded reportage, Regards From Serbia rings with the truth of a man who had the headlines come to him, and offers a comprehensive account of the conflict as only a local could tell it.

Book Regard for Reason in the Moral Mind

Download or read book Regard for Reason in the Moral Mind written by Joshua May and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The burgeoning science of ethics has produced a trend toward pessimism. Ordinary moral thought and action, we're told, are profoundly influenced by arbitrary factors and ultimately driven by unreasoned feelings. This book counters the current orthodoxy on its own terms by carefully engaging with the empirical literature. The resulting view, optimistic rationalism, shows the pervasive role played by reason our moral minds, and ultimately defuses sweeping debunking arguments in ethics. The science does suggest that moral knowledge and virtue don't come easily. However, despite the heavy influence of automatic and unconscious processes that have been shaped by evolutionary pressures, we needn't reject ordinary moral psychology as fundamentally flawed or in need of serious repair. Reason can be corrupted in ethics just as in other domains, but a special pessimism about morality in particular is unwarranted. Moral judgment and motivation are fundamentally rational enterprises not beholden to the passions.

Book excerpt: What makes a certain person's life remarkable and influential? In the case of Carl Rogers, the revolutionary and widely published humanistic psychologist, this book offers several factors: his ideas, his way of relating to colleagues, friends, and family, and simply his way of being. Likewise, the eight other people featured here are notable for the same reasons. Connecting well with people is characteristic of each of them: Thomas Gordon -- Maureen O'Hara -- Ruth SanfordJohn Vasconcellos -- Art Combs -- David RogersNatalie Rogers -- Haruko TsugeInspired in part by knowing or studying with Carl Rogers, they have created their own ideas and ventures to help many others. Their stories make this a multiple biography: a mosaic of stories about people who helped change the world -- and the way we feel about ourselves.
