Book Rehabilitation for Redevelopment

Download or read book Rehabilitation for Redevelopment written by D. Michael Hellinghausen and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis contends that the rehabilitation of existing building stock is a viable alternative to new construction in the production of housing. Principally, the thesis proposes that old office buildings, built between 1900 and 1930, be rehabilitated and converted for residential use. A specific approach to this rehabilitation and conversion is recommended. A survey was conducted in San Antonio, Texas, of the existing old office buildings within the central business district, in order to identify and define a particular type of building potentially suitable for conversion to housing. The identified building type is described and analyzed. Two examples were selected from the survey for further analysis. The approach recommended for the conversion of the building type consists of two phases, design and construction. In both, recognition of a separation between the public and private spheres in housing production is crucial. Four Levels of Construction are defined, both to aid in the demarcation of these two spheres of authority, and to identify logical stopping-points in the construction of a housing support and individual dwelling units. Within the design phase, the SAR methodology of housing support design is adapted for application to an existing office building structure. To demonstrate this application of the design methodology, and to provide some basis for an evaluation of the suggested approach, the two selected building examples have been taken through the design process in a step-by-step sequence. Based on this demonstration, an assessment is made of the suitability of the building type for this kind of conversion, of the appropriateness of the design methodology in this application, and of the approach in general.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes all aspects of sustainable conversion adaptation of existing buildings and provides solutions for making urban settlements resilient to climate change This comprehensive book explores the potential to change the character of cities with residential conversion of office space in order to withstand the negative effects of climate change. It investigates the nature and extent of sustainable conversion in a number of global cities, as well as the political, economic, social, technological, environmental, and legal drivers and barriers to successful conversion. The book also identifies the key lessons learned through international comparisons with cases in the UK, US, Australia, and the Netherlands. Building Urban Resilience Through Change of Use covers the benefits and aspects of sustainable conversion adaptation through the whole lifecycle from inception, planning, and design, to procurement, construction, and management and operational issues. It illustrates and quantifies, through empirical research, the changes that have been achieved or delivered in sustainable conversion adaptation. The book gives an overview of all aspects of performance characteristics and the conversion adaptation of existing buildings. In the end, it enables planners to make more informed decisions about whether conversion adaptation is a good choice—and if so, which types of sustainability measures are best suited for projects. Provides detailed, empirical knowledge based on real-world research undertaken in five countries over three continents on both a citywide scale and on individual buildings Case studies and exemplars demonstrate the application of the knowledge in North and South America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and in Europe Addresses the key themes of technology, finance and procurement, and the regulatory framework The first research-based book to examine how to improve resilience to climate change through sustainable reuse of buildings, Building Urban Resilience Through Change of Use is a welcome book for researchers and academics involved in building surveying, urban development, and sustainability planning.

Book Building Adaptation

Download or read book Building Adaptation written by James Douglas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-08-11 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As existing buildings age, nearly half of all construction activity in Britain is related to maintenance, refurbishment and conversions. Building adaptation is an activity that continues to make a significant contribution to the workload of the construction industry. Given its importance to sustainable construction, the proportion of adaptation works in relation to new build is likely to remain substantial for the foreseeable future, especially in the developed parts of the world. Building Adaptation, Second Edition is intended as a primer on the physical changes that can affect older properties. It demonstrates the general principles, techniques, and processes needed when existing buildings must undergo alteration, conversion, extension, improvement, or refurbishment. The publication of the first edition of Building Adaptation reflected the upsurge in refurbishment work. The book quickly established itself as one of the core texts for building surveying students and others on undergraduate and postgraduate built environment courses. This new edition continues to provide a comprehensive introduction to all the key issues relating to the adaptation of buildings. It deals with any work to a building over and above maintenance to change its capacity, function or performance.

Book excerpt: This third edition of Green Buildings Pay presents new evidence and new arguments concerning the institutional and business case that can be made for green design. The green argument has moved a long way forward since the previous edition, and this fully updated book addresses the key issues faced by architect, engineer and client today. Green Buildings Pay: Design, Productivity and Ecology examines, through a range of detailed case studies, how different approaches to green design can produce more sustainable patterns of development. These cases are examined from three main perspectives: that of the architect, the client and the user. Completely revised with all new chapters, cases, sections and introductory material the third edition presents: over 20 new researched case studies drawn from the UK, Europe and the USA, written in collaboration with the architects, engineers, clients and user groups examples of office and educational buildings of high sustainable and high architectural quality an exploration of the architectural innovations that have been driven by environmental thinking, such as the new approaches to the design of building facades, roofs, and atria cases which demonstrate current practice in the area of energy/eco-retrofits of existing buildings documentation of the benefit impact assessment schemes such as LEED and BREEAM have had upon client expectations and on design approaches over the past decade beautiful full color illustrations throughout. In the fast evolving arena of green building, the book shows how architects are reshaping their practices to deal with ever more demanding energy standards and better informed users and corporate clients.

Book Sustainable Building Adaptation

Download or read book Sustainable Building Adaptation written by Sara J. Wilkinson and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-04-07 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to adapt existing building stock is a problem being addressed by local and state governments worldwide. In most developed countries we now spend more on building adaptation than on new construction and there is an urgent need for greater knowledge and awareness of what happens to commercial buildings over time. Sustainable Building Adaptation: innovations in decision-making is a significant contribution to understanding best practice in sustainable adaptations to existing commercial buildings by offering new knowledge-based theoretical and practical insights. Models used are grounded in results of case studies conducted within three collaborative construction project team settings in Australia and the Netherlands, and exemplars are drawn from the Americas, Asia, Japan, Korea and Europe to demonstrate the application of the knowledge more broadly. Results clearly demonstrate that the new models can assist with informed decision-making in adaptation that challenges some of the prevailing solutions based on empirical approaches and which do not accommodate the sustainability dimension. The emphasis is on demonstrating how the new knowledge can be applied by practitioners to deliver professionally relevant outcomes. The book offers guidance towards a balanced approach that incorporates sustainable and optimal approaches for effective management of sustainable adaptation of existing commercial buildings.
