Book A is for Asylum Seeker Words for People on the Move A de asilo palabras para personas en movimiento

Download or read book A is for Asylum Seeker Words for People on the Move A de asilo palabras para personas en movimiento written by Rachel Ida Buff and published by Fordham University Press. This book was released on 2020-08-04 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A clear and concise A-to-Z of keywords that echo our current human rights crisis As millions are forced to leave their nations of origin as a result of political, economic, and environmental peril, rising racism and xenophobia have led to increasingly harsh policies. A mass-mediated political circus obscures both histories of migration and longstanding definitions of words for people on the move, fomenting widespread linguistic confusion. Under this circus tent, there is no regard for history, legal advocacy, or jurisprudence. Yet in a world where the differences between “undocumented migrant” and “asylum seeker” can mean life or death, words have weighty consequences. A timely antidote to this circus, A is for Asylum Seeker reframes key words that describe people on the move. Written to correct the de-meaning of terms by rhetoric and policies based on dehumanization and profitable incarceration, this glossary provides an intersectional and historically grounded consideration of the words deployed in enflamed debate. Skipping some letters of the alphabet while repeating others, thirty terms cover everything from Asylum-seeker to Zero Tolerance Policy. Each entry begins with a contemporary or historical story for illustration and then proceeds to discuss the language politics of the word. The book balances terms affected by current political debates—such as “migrant,” “refugee,” and “illegal alien”—and terms that offer historical context to these controversies, such as “fugitive,” “unhoused,” and “vagrant.” Rendered in both English and Spanish, this book offers a unique perspective on the journeys, histories, challenges, and aspirations of people on the move. Enhancing the book’s utility as an educational and organizing resource, the author provides a list of works for further reading as well as a directory of immigration-advocacy organizations throughout the United States.

Book Refugee Pathways to Freedom

Download or read book Refugee Pathways to Freedom written by Janet Mancini Billson and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2024-03-18 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Janet Mancini Billson provides extended interviews with Russian, Bhutanese, Rohingya, and Kurdish refugees, and the resettlement workers who smooth their transition into Canada, in order to paint a complex picture of creating a new life in a new land. Refugee Pathways to Freedom: Escaping Persecution and Statelessness shows how the agonies of losing one’s home and leaving loved ones behind are coupled with the dangers of escaping into unknown territory, and that those who make the journey to freedom know that the dream of a safe and secure future is fraught with risks and disappointment. She argues that refugees and refugee agencies bring powerful ideas for revamping an overwhelmed global system that freezes victims of persecution in years of political and emotional limbo. She examines how shrinking refugee flows by addressing root causes of displacement is critical, but so is speeding up selection processes to reduce despair and lost years. She further posits that drastically limiting time in refugee camps would prevent counterproductive education and work gaps and that reducing language barriers to employment ensures well-being and successful integration.

Book Refugees Self Reliance Development

Download or read book Refugees Self Reliance Development written by Easton-Calabria, Evan and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2022-06-10 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evan Easton-Calabria’s critical history of refugee self-reliance assistance brings new dimensions to refugee and international development studies. The promotion of refugee self-reliance is evident today, yet its history remains largely unexplored, with good practices and longstanding issues often missed. Through archival and contemporary evidence, this book documents a century of little-known efforts to foster refugee self-reliance, including the economic, political, and social motives driving this assistance. With five case studies from Greece, Tanzania, Pakistan, Uganda, and Egypt, the book tracks refugee self-reliance as a malleable concept used to pursue ulterior interests. It reshapes understandings of refugee self-reliance and delivers important messages for contemporary policy making. The first chapter is available Open Access under CC-BY-NC-ND licence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a humanitarian disaster unfolding before our eyes, a global tragedy that affects men, women, and children. We are referring to the largest humanitarian crisis of our generation, which has shaped our world and produced over 100 million people forcibly displaced globally. Amid such a challenging scenario, the global church is called to consider some unavoidable questions, such as: How can Christians respond to the current migration crisis? What are some resources available to Christians to help them transform this tragic reality? What are some strategic approaches for bringing hope to asylum seekers and refugees? In this book, Jairo de Oliveira deals with these and many other related questions based on his interactions with the Fur, a Muslim people group from Darfur, Sudan, living as asylum seekers and refugees in Jordan, in the Middle East. After providing a thorough historical background and cultural analysis of Fur, the author commends a contextualization model and fruitful practices that emerged from his study of the people. Hope for the Afflicted serves as a manual and practical guide for those who feel called to engage the current migration crisis by proclaiming the hope of the gospel and discipling asylum seekers and refugees worldwide.

Download or read book Forced Migration Research written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2020-01-05 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2018, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees estimated 70.8 million people could be considered forced migrants, which is nearly double their estimation just one decade ago. This includes internally displaced persons, refugees, asylum seekers, and stateless people. This drastic increase in forced migrants exacerbates the already urgent need for a systematic policy-related review of the available data and analyses on forced migration and refugee movements. To explore the causes and impacts of forced migration and population displacement, the National Academies convened a two-day workshop on May 21-22, 2019. The workshop discussed new approaches in social demographic theory, methodology, data collection and analysis, and practice as well as applications to the community of researchers and practitioners who are concerned with better understanding and assisting forced migrant populations. This workshop brought together stakeholders and experts in demography, public health, and policy analysis to review and address some of the domestic implications of international migration and refugee flows for the United States. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.

Download or read book Extremely Violent Societies written by Christian Gerlach and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-10-14 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking book Christian Gerlach traces the social roots of the extraordinary processes of human destruction involved in mass violence throughout the twentieth century. He argues that terms such as 'genocide' and 'ethnic cleansing' are too narrow to explain the diverse motives and interests that cause violence to spread in varying forms and intensities. From killings and expulsions to enforced hunger, collective rape, strategic bombing, forced labour and imprisonment he explores what happened before, during, and after periods of widespread bloodshed in countries such as Armenia, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Nazi-occupied Greece and in anti-guerilla wars worldwide in order to highlight the crucial role of socio-economic pressures in the generation of group conflicts. By focussing on why so many different people participated in or supported mass violence, and why different groups were victimized, he offers us a new way of understanding one of the most disturbing phenomena of our times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Is it OK not to be afraid of losing your country, all your past, all your friends, and to create a new life in a new place?" Civil wars in Africa, the collapse of the central regime in Somalia, genocide in Rwanda, the Persian Gulf war in the Middle East, the collapse of the military regimes in Central America, new ethnic clashes in the former USSR - all these events have resulted in an increased number of displaced people, most of whom never expected to find themselves in such a situation. Their refusal to accept the division of their countries into separate ethnic, religious, or political groups or to participate in dubious political games exacted a heavy price - they lost their homelands and became refugees. These stories show what it means to find yourself a stranger in your homeland and the difficulties to be overcome before you feel at home again. Most importantly, however, these stories tell us about acceptance and the need to bridge differences in language, religion, culture, and traditions. Bullets on the Water makes it clear that most refugees in Canada have an unquestionable belief in the importance of acceptance, tolerance, and respect for difference. Their choice to become refugees was dictated not only by the dynamics of political events but, perhaps even more, by the fact that the culture of animosity, violence, and hatred was completely foreign to them. From the book: "I began to yell my name. This is the only way to announce that you have been arrested or detained and that you might disappear. You have to yell your name, because this is the only way to get this message to an international NGO (non-governmental organization) operating in Guatemala. This desperate gesture worked for many Guatemalans who were detained. In Guatemala itself, there was no information whatsoever about who was arrested and what happened to those in prison." "I did not remember anything. I realized that I was in Yugoslavia. I was transferred to Titograd and later to Belgrade. I spent months in a camp headed by the UN. There I understood what really did happen. Four people were killed. One of them was an eight-year-old child."
