Book Reformer of Basel

Download or read book Reformer of Basel written by Diane Poythress and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unjustly forgotten for centuries, Johannes Oecolampadius of Basel was a prolific pioneer reformer. As a linguist and exegete he was matched only by Calvin, for whom his writings were a valued resource. But here, at least, is a worthy survey of his life and work. Exhaustive without being exhausting, and solidly learned while easy to read, this is a volume of major importance for all students of Reformed thought. J. I. Packer, Board of Governors Professor of Theology, Regent College'Johannes Oecolampadius is one of the forgotten heroes of the Reformation. Diane Poythress has put the modern church in her debt by recalling his great achievements in the city of Basel and more widely through his influential biblical commentaries. It is a fascinating study.' - Gordon J. Wenham, Old Testament Professor Emeritus, Trinity College Bristol

Book excerpt: For 500 years, John Oecolampadius, the great linguist, biblical scholar, theologian, preacher, and pastor of the Swiss-German Reformation has remained relatively unknown by the English-speaking church. Thanks to a new generation of scholars, however, his seminal and pivotal work is finally emerging from the shadows cast by better known figures. In this short vita of the Reformer of Basel, first printed in 1864, biographer Theophil Stähelin declared, Oecolampadius "has pulled the light of the Gospel out from under the bushel and has set it on the candlestick, so that it shines to all those who are in the house, and by God's grace it has shone forth to this day and Basel has become a city on the mountain, from which the rays of the Gospel spread far. ... He is worthy of his name and his work will not be forgotten, and to that end may the following short description of his life be of service."

Book Teaching the Reformation

Download or read book Teaching the Reformation written by Amy Nelson Burnett and published by OUP USA. This book was released on 2006-10-12 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though the Reformation was sparked by the actions of Martin Luther, it was not a decisive break from the Church in Rome but rather a gradual process of religious and social change. As the men responsible for religious instruction and moral oversight at the village level, parish pastors played a key role in the implementation of the Reformation and the gradual development of a Protestant religious culture, but their ministry has seldom been examined in the light of how they were prepared for the pastorate. Teaching the Reformation examines the four generations of Reformed pastors who served the church of Basel in the century after the Reformation, focusing on the evolution of pastoral training and Reformed theology, the theory and practice of preaching, and the performance of pastoral care in both urban and rural parishes. It looks at how these pastors were educated and what they learned, examining not only the study of theology but also the general education in languages, rhetoric and dialectic that future pastors received at the citys Latin school and in the arts faculty of the university. It points to significant changes over time in the content of that education, which in turn separated Basels pastors into distinct generations. The study also looks more specifically at preaching in Basel, demonstrating how the evolution of dialectic and rhetoric instruction, and particularly the spread of Ramism, led to changes in both exegetical method and homiletics. These developments, combined with the gradual elaboration of Reformed theology, resulted in a distinctive style of Reformed Orthodox preaching in Basel. The development of pastoral education also had a direct impact on how Basels clergy carried out their other dutiescatechization, administering the sacraments, counseling the dying and consoling the bereaved, and overseeing the moral conduct of their parishioners. The growing professionalization of the clergy, the result of more intensive education and more stringent supervision, contributed to the gradual implantation of a Reformed religious culture in Basel.

Book Theology of the Reformers

Download or read book Theology of the Reformers written by Timothy George and published by B&H Publishing Group. This book was released on 2013-09-01 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First released in 1988, this 25th Anniversary Edition of Timothy George’s Theology of the Reformers includes a new chapter and bibliography on William Tyndale, the reformer who courageously stood at the headwaters of the English Reformation. Also included are expanded opening and concluding chapters and updated bibliographies on each reformer. Theology of the Reformers articulates the theological self-understanding of five principal figures from the period of the Reformation: Martin Luther, Huldrych Zwingli, John Calvin, Menno Simons, and William Tyndale. George establishes the context for their work by describing the spiritual climate of their time. Then he profiles each reformer, providing a picture of their theology that does justice to the scope of their involvement in the reforming effort. George details the valuable contributions these men made to issues historically considered pillars of the Christian faith: Scripture, Jesus Christ, salvation, the church, and last things. The intent is not just to document the theology of these reformers, but also to help the church of today better understand and more faithfully live its calling as followers of the one true God. Through and through, George’s work provides a truly integrated and comprehensive picture of Christian theology at the time of the Reformation.

This book was released on 2017-09-25 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps the most consequential series on 1John ever preached and one of the earliest examples of a complete expository series from the Swiss Reformation, these sermons mark Oecolampadius' arrival as the leading voice of the evangelical movement in Basel. As Ernst Staehelin noted, here in the 1John series the Reformer "for the first time organizes the reformatory message in a comprehensive manner." Preached over the course of twenty-one consecutive evenings in Basel's St. Martin's Church in December of 1523, this popular Advent series ran through six print editions in two years. More than any single series, it set the standard for Basel's program of lectio continua preaching which, with allowance made for the main feasts of the Christian year, became the norm for the Sunday service as well. In these sermons, modeled after the Reformer's important translations of Chrysostom and delivered concurrently with his famous lectures on Isaiah, he explains the pressing doctrines the congregation asked him to address: Are we indeed justified by faith, and if so, then what is the role of works in the Christian life? In response, Oecolampadius provides, among other things, a biblically rich and theologically lucid Johannine complement to Luther's labors on the Pauline doctrine of justification and a strong claim, ringing even in the final sentence, that the presence of Christ issues in works of love. Anyone seeking a fresh perspective on the preaching of the Reformation, an understanding of the chief homiletical corrective of the age, a clear articulation of basic Christian doctrine and the ordo salutis, or even (in the words of the Reformer himself) "an enchiridion for the Christian life," will find fresh and ample inspiration in this vital but forgotten classic which, after 500 years, appears here in English for the first time.

Book The Prayer That Turns the World Upside Down

Download or read book The Prayer That Turns the World Upside Down written by R. Albert Mohler and published by HarperChristian + ORM. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Our Father, who art in heaven….” The opening words of the Lord’s Prayer have become so familiar that we often speak them without a thought, sometimes without any awareness that we are speaking at all. But to the disciples who first heard these words from Jesus, the prayer was a thunderbolt, a radical new way to pray that changed them and the course of history. Far from a safe series of comforting words, the Lord’s Prayer makes extraordinary claims, topples every earthly power, and announces God’s reign over all things in heaven and on earth. In this groundbreaking new book, R. Albert Mohler Jr. recaptures the urgency and transformational nature of the prayer, revealing once again its remarkable, world-upending power. Step by step, phrase by phrase, The Prayer That Turns the World Upside Down explains what these words mean and how we are to pray them. The Lord’s Prayer is the most powerful prayer in the Bible, taught by Jesus to those closest to him. We desperately need to relearn its power and practice. The Prayer That Turns the World Upside Down shows us how.
