Download or read book Reflections II written by George Manus and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2018-01-17 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Reflections II" has been given its name because as the author, George Manus himself says: My reflections have developed into stories. In the book the author, George Manus, reflects over this and that as well as the somewhat unexpected. No less than 66 reflections have seen the light of day, from those dealing with moral topics such as AMBITIONS and DEPENDENCE, to the enjoyable OSCARs CONFIRMATION SPEECH. Some of the reflections are self-experienced, whereas in others George Manus focuses on general topics. The short stories are presented alphabetically and can thus be read individually.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reflections II By: Allan Edward Young, Ph.D. Reflections II is a continuation of Reflections I, the fact and fantasy of his life, as told by Allan Edward Young, Columbia University, 1967. There have been semi-interchangeable careers in the academic, government consulting, and business investment-advisory fields. There have been both lifelong and brief friendships and relations of both dubious and inestimable value. There's been extended work and travel on each of the world's continents, save Antarctica. There's been some successes and some most regrettable errors on his part which, at times, have greatly hurt others. And what has it all really added up to? This, he does not truly know. But he thought he might better approach an answer by setting some of these things down in story form.
Download or read book The Bad Taste of Others written by Jennifer Tsien and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2012-05-26 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An act of bad taste was more than a faux pas to French philosophers of the Enlightenment. To Montesquieu, Voltaire, Diderot, and others, bad taste in the arts could be a sign of the decline of a civilization. These intellectuals, faced with the potential chaos of an expanding literary market, created seals of disapproval in order to shape the literary and cultural heritage of France in their image. In The Bad Taste of Others Jennifer Tsien examines the power of ridicule and exclusion to shape the period's aesthetics. Tsien reveals how the philosophes consecrated themselves as the protectors of true French culture modeled on the classical, the rational, and the orderly. Their anxiety over the invasion of the Republic of Letters by hordes of hacks caused them to devise standards that justified the marginalization of worldy women, "barbarians," and plebeians. While critics avoided strict definitions of good taste, they wielded the term "bad taste" against all popular works they wished to erase from the canon of French literature, including Renaissance poetry, biblical drama, the burlesque theater of the previous century, the essays of Montaigne, and genres associated with the so-called précieuses. Tsien's study draws attention to long-disregarded works of salon culture, such as the énigmes, and offers a new perspective on the critical legacy of Voltaire. The philosophes' open disdain for the undiscerning reading public challenges the belief that the rise of aesthetics went hand in hand with Enlightenment ideas of equality and relativism.
Download or read book Professor I I Glass A Tribute and Memorial written by Kazuyoshi Takayama and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-10-16 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides personal memories along with description of scientific works written by ex-graduate students and research associates of the late Professor Glass. The described research work covers a wide range of shock wave phenomena, resulting from seeds planted by Professor Glass. Professor Glass was born in Poland in 1918. He immigrated together with his parents to Canada at the age of 12 and received all his professional education at the University of Toronto, Canada. He became a world recognized expert in shock wave phenomena, and during his 45 years of active research he supervised more than 125 master and doctoral students, post-doctoral fellows and visiting research associates. In this book seven of his past students/research-associates describe their personal memories of Professor Glass and present some of their investigations in shock wave phenomena which sprung from their past work with Professor Glass. Specifically, these investigations include underwater shock waves, shock/bubble interaction, medical applications of shock wave, various types of shock tubes and shock tube techniques, shock wave attenuation and different types of shock wave reflections.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This IMA Volume in Mathematics and its Applications MULTIDIMENSIONAL HYPERBOLIC PROBLEMS AND COMPUTATIONS is based on the proceedings of a workshop which was an integral part ofthe 1988-89 IMA program on NONLINEAR WAVES. We are grateful to the Scientific Commit tee: James Glimm, Daniel Joseph, Barbara Keyfitz, Andrew Majda, Alan Newell, Peter Olver, David Sattinger and David Schaeffer for planning and implementing an exciting and stimulating year-long program. We especially thank the Work shop Organizers, Andrew Majda and James Glimm, for bringing together many of the major figures in a variety of research fields connected with multidimensional hyperbolic problems. A vner Friedman Willard Miller PREFACE A primary goal of the IMA workshop on Multidimensional Hyperbolic Problems and Computations from April 3-14, 1989 was to emphasize the interdisciplinary nature of contemporary research in this field involving the combination of ideas from the theory of nonlinear partial differential equations, asymptotic methods, numerical computation, and experiments. The twenty-six papers in this volume span a wide cross-section of this research including some papers on the kinetic theory of gases and vortex sheets for incompressible flow in addition to many papers on systems of hyperbolic conservation laws. This volume includes several papers on asymptotic methods such as nonlinear geometric optics, a number of articles applying numerical algorithms such as higher order Godunov methods and front tracking to physical problems along with comparison to experimental data, and also several interesting papers on the rigorous mathematical theory of shock waves.

Download or read book Structure Reports written by J. Trotter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 970 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past the aim of Structure Reports has been to present critical reports on all work of crystallographic structural interest, whether it is derived directly from X-ray, electron, or neutron diffraction, or even indirectly from other experiments. The reports were in tended to be critical and not mere abstracts, except in some cases when a brief indication of the content of a paper of related interest was included in the form of an abstract. In selecting topics for reporting, the criterion 'of structural interest' was freely interpreted in terms of what was topically interesting. However, the amount of Iiterature covering matters of structural interest became so large that this policy could no Ionger be followed, and from Volume 28 onwards, critical reports are given only on actual structure deter minations. Only in this way was it possible to keep yearly volumes to a fairly uniform and usable size. Starting with Volume 30, Structure Reports is produced in a new format by photo-offset printing from typed manuscript with unjustified lines. At the time when the decision for this change was taken, the cost of setting the manuscript in type was becoming so high as to render the cost of individual subscription prohibitive. At that time automatic typing methods giving justified lines, etc.
