In The Landscape of Architecture the author has remarkably surpassed the contradiction between a necessarily logical-linear explanation, to facilitate the intelligibility of the content, and its vast complexity. This is an inescapable complexity for a trustworthy description and analysis of contemporary knowledge. Commitment to our historical time involves assuming that the logical positivist paradigm has been wrapped, not displaced, by the paradigm of complexity. The principle of causality, and the independence between “cause and effect” of the observer, is questioned by the complex paradigm, for which, in the management of knowledge, the observer is ascribed as data or event of the process itself. In her essay professor García-Hípola leads us to theoretical-critical scenarios through her own experience, including her protagonism in the processes, reflections, and issues that she analyzes. From this complexity, the transversality between author, spectator, teacher and creator is claimed, literally in the quotes of the experiences about Hieronymus Bosch’s work, or in those where the architect is subjected to new roles that come from matter’s behavior, as a true ecologist, or those of the anthropologist who explores human action and its detritus in the landscape, as in her project for Villajoyosa, veritable treatise of “field architecture”.

By midcentury these architects and their students had rewritten the country's architectural history and transformed the capital into a metropolis where new buildings that evoked pre-conquest, colonial, and International Style architecture coexisted. Through an exploration of schools, a university campus, a government ministry, a workers' park, and houses for Diego Rivera and Luis Barragan, Kathryn O'Rourke offers a new interpretation of modern architecture in the Mexican capital, showing close links between design, evolving understandings of national architectural history, folk art, and social reform. This study focuses on one of the first novelists to introduce a version of magical realism and the neo-baroque into Latin American fiction. Original research colours eyewitness accounts of Alejo Carpentier's travels through Spainbefore and during the Spanish Civil War and the inspiration that he drew from the Baroque architecture he encountered there. The origins of Carpentier's uniquely 'baroque' style are found in his endeavour to create a period ambience in his historical fictions through descriptions of visual arts and architectural settings, and parodies of the literary style of Spanish Golden Age writers. 'Medusa's gaze' is used as a metaphor for the petrifying power of theBaroque as a weapon of European dominance. By wielding the same weapon in an act of postcolonial defiance, Carpentier enabled a reassertion of Latin American culture, and laid the foundations for the 1960s 'Boom' in the Latin American novel.
