Book American Haiku

Download or read book American Haiku written by Toru Kiuchi and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Haiku: New Readings explores the history and development of haiku by American writers, examining individual writers. In the late nineteenth century, Japanese poetry influenced through translation the French Symbolist poets, from whom British and American Imagist poets, Amy Lowell, Ezra Pound, T. E. Hulme, and John Gould Fletcher, received stimulus. Since the first English-language hokku (haiku) written by Yone Noguchi in 1903, one of the Imagist poet Ezra Pound’s well-known haiku-like poem, “In A Station of the Metro,” published in 1913, is most influential on other Imagist and later American haiku poets. Since the end of World War II many Americans and Canadians tried their hands at writing haiku. Among them, Richard Wright wrote over four thousand haiku in the final eighteen months of his life in exile in France. His Haiku: This Other World, ed. Yoshinobu Hakutani and Robert L. Tener (1998), is a posthumous collection of 817 haiku Wright himself had selected. Jack Kerouac, a well-known American novelist like Richard Wright, also wrote numerous haiku. Kerouac’s Book of Haikus, ed. Regina Weinreich (Penguin, 2003), collects 667 haiku. In recent decades, many other American writers have written haiku: Lenard Moore, Sonia Sanchez, James A. Emanuel, Burnell Lippy, and Cid Corman. Sonia Sanchez has two collections of haiku: Like the Singing Coming off the Drums (Boston: Beacon Press, 1998) and Morning Haiku (Boston: Beacon Press, 2010). James A. Emanuel’s Jazz from the Haiku King (Broadside Press, 1999) is also a unique collection of haiku. Lenard Moore, author of his haiku collections The Open Eye (1985), has been writing and publishing haiku for over 20 years and became the first African American to be elected as President of the Haiku Society of America. Burnell Lippy’s haiku appears in the major American haiku journals, Where the River Goes: The Nature Tradition in English-Language Haiku (2013).Cid Corman is well-known not only as a haiku poet but a translator of Japanese ancient and modern haiku poets: Santoka, Walking into the Wind (Cadmus Editions, 1994).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the landscapes and memory of golf and examining the games nature and appeal, this collection of seventy-two haiku poems and essays aims to lead readers to a fuller appreciation of the culture and history of golf and a deeper awareness of a players place in the game. Be the Pine, Be the Ball also reveals the compelling beauty and power of haiku, the most popular poetic form in the world. Through the brevity of its style, precise language, and ability to reveal how ordinary moments and elements of our lives are pathways to a better understanding of ourselves and the world around us, haiku can have both a meditative and consequential effect on the reader. A key to the connection between haiku and golf is that both foster powers of concentration and detailed observation with a related reduction of distractions. Both seek to cultivate a more tranquil and disciplined mind and to translate that condition into how a life is lived and a game is played.

Book Reflections of a Beachcomber

Gasser's soul to illustrate his errors of thought and emotion that prolonged his many crises. In this personal collection, he recalls how he successfully coped with job losses, divorce, and three disabling conditions. Reflections of a Beachcomber explores ways of thinking and feeling that lead to coping successfully with disability generally and blindness in particular, linking those coping skills with problems with relationships. Gasser combines twenty-five years of teaching college writing and literature and master's level studies in counseling and guidance with a modern existential philosophy to guide you through many of the major crises life can bring. He also provides insight into the different ways of working out effective solutions to personal challenges. Gasser shares his story in Reflections of a Beachcomber to show how you can learn from your experiences rather than being dominated by them.

Book Haiku Moment

Download or read book Haiku Moment written by Bruce Ross and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2011-12-27 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kagero Nikki, translated here as The Gossamer Years, belongs to the same period as the celebrated Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikuibu. This remarkably frank autobiographical diary and personal confession attempts to describe a difficult relationship as it reveals two tempestuous decades of the author's unhappy marriage and her growing indignation at rival wives and mistresses. Too impetuous to be satisfied as a subsidiary wife, this beautiful (and unnamed) noblewoman of the Heian dynasty protests the marriage system of her time in one of Japanese literature's earliest attempts to portray difficult elements of the predominant social hierarchy. A classic work of early Japanese prose, The Gossamer Years is an important example of the development of Heian literature, which, at its best, represents an extraordinary flowering of realistic expression, an attempt, unique for its age, to treat the human condition with frankness and honesty. A timeless and intimate glimpse into the culture of ancient Japan, this translation by Edward Seidensticker paints a revealing picture of married life in the Heian period.

William Hammett, author of John Lennon and the Mercy Street Café "Haiku Reflections is a light hearted collection of modern-style haiku. With themes that exist within seasons, alight with spirited punctuation, the language and moments of reflection are beautiful, gentle, and occasionally whimsical." Haiku Reflections by Geraldine Hartman will nourish your spirit through every season and inspire you to live each day with purpose and gratitude. A beautiful gift." Cam M., a reader from BC, Canada "I confess, I don't know much about the art of haiku, but I do know a lot about words, and Geraldine Hartman uses them in spare, but beautiful, combinations to evoke a whole host of seasonal images and emotions. You wouldn't think a mere three lines--just 17 syllables--could say so much, but if chosen wisely, they certainly can." Marcia Meara, author of Wake Robin Ridge

The story of Murasaki, a Japanese poetess and author living in 11th-century Japan, inspired us to write our own haiku, since woven throughout the book were haiku poems written and sent by Murasaki and her friends. More Reflections of Friendship: Gentle Words in Haiku, the second book of our haiku trilogy, is a collection of the ordinary moments of our lives (from July of 2003 to July of 2004) transformed into the poetry of haiku. We hope you enjoy our contemporary haiku, written with respect to and in the spirit of the ancient poets.

Book Poetry Practical Theology and Reflective Practice

Download or read book Poetry Practical Theology and Reflective Practice written by Mark Pryce and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-13 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking study offers an innovative critical analysis of poetry as a resource for reflective practice in the context of continuing professional development. In the contemporary drive in all professions for greater rigour in education, training, and development, little attention is paid to the inner shape of learning and meaning-making for individuals and groups, especially ways in which individuals are formed for the task of their work. Building on empirical research into the author’s professional practice, the book takes the use of poetry in clergy continuing ministerial development as a case-study to examine the value of poetry in professional learning. Setting out the advantages and limitations of poetry as a stimulant for imaginative, critical reflexivity, and formation within professional reflective practice, the study develops a practical model for group reflection around poetry, distilling pedagogical approaches for working effectively with poetry in continuing professional development. Drawing together a number of strands of thinking about poetry, Practical Theology, and reflective practice into a tightly argued study, the book is an important methodological resource. It makes available a range of primary and secondary sources, offering researchers into professional practice a model of ethnographic research in Practical Theology which embraces innovative methods for reflexivity and theological reflection, including the value of auto-ethnographic poetry.
