Book excerpt: A Defense of Poetry argues that literature can be defined - pragmatist and historicist arguments notwithstanding - and that in its definition its unique value can be discovered. In qualified opposition to the most sophisticated Formalist definitions involving redundancy or economy of expression, the author identifies literature ontologically as a sign of the preconceptual, as the "ostensive moment" that discloses neither the purpose nor the structure of existence but existence itself, revealed in its nonhuman register.

Book Triumphant Reflections of the Mind

Download or read book Triumphant Reflections of the Mind written by Jeanne M. Brohl and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-11-20 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Triumphant Reflections of the Mind Poems & Essays “To be or not to be? That is the question.” Shakespeare had posed this question which led me to this exploration of existence vs. non-existence. One way to look at existence is by persistence, after being recognized as a non-existent, human being. Persistence is used as a vehicle through which one is transported to a reality that they feel is true. Existence involves the recognized five senses, i.e. feeling, touching, seeing (viewing), tasting, and hearing. When acknowledging these five senses, one is able to function as a evolutionary human being leaning toward an international understanding of the benefits mankind received through God, our Father. However, one can be self-actualizing by using the senses available to one by the moment he needs the senses. If, for some reason all five senses are not available, then compensation is brought to the forefront by making the other senses more intense, thereby allowing for the maximization of a unified body functioning at its fullest. Constantly reviewing, applying, and directing self, to maximize each sense in accordance with his conscience – leads to the betterment of society. This betterment can be seen as either good or excellent. Mediocrity has no place to focus on the purest of quests. At this present writing, it is felt that there are many loopholes in the systems developing a quasi or even a false sense of well being.. is it is the thought process of the brain and its motivation to excel or fail, that might allow for a leaning of the masses to entice honest and demonstrative leadership Leadership that is existing, to allow its citizens the fullest benefit for societal gain, could occur if the masses are led by ethical, persuasive, and pure reasons. For decisions made by a person in power, to allow the consideration of an architectural mind building a peaceful environment in the land to which he rules –– either by a Republic or not. Is one dilemma in mankind’s pursuit of peace. PAX Praise God for our diversity and welcoming new ideas! Jeanne Brohl

Download or read book Duality written by Shykia Bell and published by . This book was released on 2018-12-16 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Duality is prevalent in nature and humanity, yet all too often our differences are viewed as negative traits. As a means to explore the depths of the human spirit, the author compiled a series of poems, essays, original artwork, and images. She highlights that although we view life through different lenses, we may have more in common than we realize. We're all on a personal journey, paved by our choices, and colored with emotion. Duality considers such journeys from the perspectives of not just the author, but unnamed imagined characters in various stages of life. In Duality, you'll experience the anticipation of a new life and the reluctant farewell of a mature one, the naïve ramblings of an adolescent and the bittersweet musings of an elder, the devastating sting of heartbreak and the intoxicating magic of love, the hollowness of desperation and the empowerment that comes with hope.

The second section brings poetry into relation with ethics, politics and practical deliberation, and the third considers it alongside science and imagination. The last section is an homage to The Hudson Review, for whom she has served as an Advisory Editor for many years. As a philosopher, Emily Grosholz has written and thought about feminism, racism, and mathematics and science, which has led her to admire all the more the distinct wisdom of poetry. • Pages : 391 pages

Download or read book Teaching Writing written by Tessa Daffern and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-25 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 21st century, writing is more important than at any other time in human history. Yet much of the emphasis in schooling has been on reading, and after the early years, writing skills have been given less attention. Internationally, too many children are leaving school without the writing skills they need to succeed in life. The evidence indicates that students rarely develop proficiency as writers without effective teacher instruction. Teaching Writing offers a comprehensive approach for the middle years of schooling, when the groundwork should be laid for the demanding writing tasks of senior school and the workplace. Teaching Writing outlines evidence-based principles of writing instruction for upper primary students and young adolescents. It presents strategies that are ready for adoption or adaptation, and exemplars to assist with designing and implementing writing lessons across the middle years of school. It addresses writing from a multimodal perspective while also highlighting the importance of teaching linguistic aspects of text design such as sentence structure, vocabulary and spelling as foundations for meaning-making. Contributors argue that students need to continue to develop their skills in both handwriting and keyboarding. Examples of the teaching of writing across disciplines are presented through a range of vignettes. Strategies for assessing student writing and for supporting students with diverse needs are also explored. With contributions from leading literacy educators, Teaching Writing is an invaluable resource for primary, secondary and pre-service teachers.

Book Reflections of Tasawwuf

Download or read book Reflections of Tasawwuf written by Charles Upton and published by Sophia Perennis et Universalis. This book was released on 2008 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sufism is the practice of remaining aware of the real presence of God in every circumstance, until Certainty is reached. The dizzying complexity of Sufi metaphysics, the passionate beauty of Sufi poetry, and the profound Sufi science of spiritual psychology, are all based on this. The Sufi Path is the process of spiritual transformation, ultimately resulting (God willing) in self-transcendence, produced by the Certainty of God's presence. In traditional Muslim society, many different moral, intellectual and spiritual functions were performed by those 'estates' responsible for maintaining them. Parents, imams and 'grammar school' teachers transmitted the fundamental ritual and moral principles of Islamic society. The madrasas took care of such traditional sciences as Qur'anic exegesis and the study of prophetic ahadith. The schools of fiqh maintained and applied the shari'ah. The mutakallimiin developed and taught kalam, Islamic 'scholastic theology'. The falasifa or philosophers carried on an intellectual tradition largely inherited from the Greeks. The ishraqiyyun developed a mystical theosophy based on direct spiritual insight. Physicians employed systems of healing derived in part from metaphysics. Poets often transmitted sophisticated spiritual lore; many other traditional craftsmen did the same. The mathematicians, astronomers and other scientists sought to uncover the Signs of God in numbers, in geometrical shapes, and in the heavens. And the alchemists worked on the reconstitution of the original human form (al-fitra) in psycho-physical terms. So when a seeker applied for admittance to a Sufi tariqa, he likely knew his Goal. The lower rungs of the ladder of moral, intellectual and spiritual aspiration were clearly defined and largely taken care of; consequently the aspirant to Sufi initiation could be more certain than he was seeking God Alone. In modern 'semi-Muslim' societies, however, things are not so clear. And as for those Sufi tariqas that have emigrated to the West, and the individuals who seek admittance to them, the situation is even more ambiguous. The traditional supports for a collective worldview that places God first and sees His hand in everything are no longer readily available, and no one whose worldview is basically secular can follow the Sufi path as the great Sufis of the past once did. In the secular West especially, Sufi tariqas lack the exoteric religious culture in relation to which they could be truly esoteric; without the Zahir, one might say, there can be no Batin. Therefore This book is not so much a text on Sufism itself as an attempt - woefully inadequate-to indicate certain elements of the original context that allowed Sufism to be what it is.

Book The Crying Book

Download or read book The Crying Book written by Heather Christle and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2019-11-05 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bestselling "lyrical, moving book: part essay, part memoir, part surprising cultural study" is an examination of why we cry, how we cry, and what it means to cry from a woman on the cusp of motherhood confronting her own depression (The New York Times Book Review). Heather Christle has just lost a dear friend to suicide and now must reckon with her own depression and the birth of her first child. As she faces her grief and impending parenthood, she decides to research the act of crying: what it is and why people do it, even if they rarely talk about it. Along the way, she discovers an artist who designed a frozen–tear–shooting gun and a moth that feeds on the tears of other animals. She researches tear–collecting devices (lachrymatories) and explores the role white women’s tears play in racist violence. Honest, intelligent, rapturous, and surprising, Christle’s investigations look through a mosaic of science, history, and her own lived experience to find new ways of understanding life, loss, and mental illness. The Crying Book is a deeply personal tribute to the fascinating strangeness of tears and the unexpected resilience of joy.
