Book Reflections on the Teachings of Maharishi A Personal Journey

Download or read book Reflections on the Teachings of Maharishi A Personal Journey written by John C. Hornburg and published by 1st World Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-18 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is nothing in this book that one must do. No advice is given and there are no rules to follow. Where certain actions would ordinarily be advised for self-improvement, the emphasis is on how the human organism heals itself through self-awareness. This awareness is both on the level of ordinary day-to-day consciousness-where we are aware of our shortcomings- and ultimately on the level of Absolute Pure Consciousness, the source and healer of all things. Nature knows how to heal the organism it created, and the ability of self-knowledge it placed within us is the activating factor. This is the simple ability we all have to see and know. I give you what I have learned from Maharishi only to help you see. For from seeing develops knowing and-at the level of Pure Consciousness-knowing accomplishes everything. John C. Hornburg has been an educator and writer most of his adult life and considers himself a teacher through his writing. In the 1970s he wrote two book-length manuscripts on Maharishi's teachings: The Absolute Theory of Golf and Transcendental Christianity. In the 1980s, after several years of teaching Maharishi Transcendental Meditation he presented a self-written series of 28 half-hour lectures on Prescott (Arizona) Public Access Television entitled Consciousness: The Final Frontier. During this period he also wrote and taught several non-credit courses at Yavapai Community College in Prescott, including The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind, The Epic of Gilgamesh, and Understanding Stress: Just Say Know. Also at this time he published two articles in Fellowship in Prayer magazine: The Non-Specific Basis of Ideal Prayer and Resolving Christian Paradox. He served in the U.S. Peace Corps as a secondary school teacher in Ethiopia and Malawi from 1964 to 1966. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Government from the University of Texas (1964) and a Master's in the Science of Creative Intelligence from Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield, Iowa, 2000.

Book The Maharishi Effect

Download or read book The Maharishi Effect written by Geoff Gilpin and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2006-10-19 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This penetrating literary-journalistic memoir depicts the clash between promise and reality within the movement that virtually defined alternative spirituality in America: Transcendental Meditation and its iconic guru, the Maharishi. Like hundreds of thousands of young people, Geoff Gilpin entered the Transcendental Meditation movement in the early seventies, when its guru, the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, was fresh in the public mind as the spiritual guide to the Beatles and the man who made "meditation" a household word. The movement's Iowa campus was a center of spiritual idealism and healthy living. Gilpin left after five years, settling into a successful career in the software business. Two decades later, wistful over the past and concerned by the increasingly harsh tone of the Maharishi's public pronouncements, Gilpin decided to return and find out what had become of the spiritual community of his youth. His move back to Fairfield, Iowa, proved both revealing and unsettling. He rediscovered what had drawn his generation to Eastern spirituality - and what he and his cohorts had lost in following the usual path to careerism. But he also experienced disturbing changes in a spiritual organization that - while attracting money, celebrity, and clout - had seemingly drifted from its early ideals. Its inner culture, Gilpin observed, had divided into haves and have-nots, in ways both subtle and obvious. The Maharishi - believed to be in his late eighties or early nineties and now living in Holland - was promoting projects that involved global government, third-world rulers, claims of levitation, and grandiose fund-raising campaigns. The Maharishi Effect is one man's bittersweet chronicle of innocence found and lost in the movement that, more than any other, defined spirituality for a generation.

Book Transcendental Meditation

Download or read book Transcendental Meditation written by Jack Forem and published by Hay House, Inc. This book was released on 2012-10-08 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transcendental Meditation (TM) is a simple, natural method of allowing the mind to go beyond thoughts and gain access to the silent inner field of creativity, energy, peace, and happiness that is our own essential nature, our Self. Widely known and prescribed by physicians for its powerful stress-reducing effects, TM is much more than that. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi (1918–2008), who brought TM to the West, said that TM offers any individual not only a gateway to the highest spiritual unfoldment (Enlightenment), but also "sound physical and mental health, greater ability in action, a greater capacity to think clearly, increased efficiency in work, and more loving and rewarding relationships with others." Five million TM practitioners around the world and more than 360 published, peer-reviewed scientific studies have consistently corroborated these lofty claims. Described as "a great book, by far the most comprehensive on the TM Program" when it was a bestseller in its original version, Jack Forem’s study of TM became a much-loved classic. This updated edition contains all the features of the original plus much more. Clear, easy-to-read diagrams explain scientific research showing TM’s beneficial effect on the brain and a broad spectrum of contemporary concerns, from health, self-actualization, and development of intelligence to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and much more. In these pages: · Oprah Winfrey tells how she has offered TM to everyone on her staff. · Dr. Mehmet Oz explains the benefits of TM for heart health. · School principals describe the dramatically positive effect on their students when TM is introduced in the classroom. Interviews with celebrities as well as men and women of every age, background, and religion provide a lively testimonial to the efficacy of TM in making anyone’s life happier, healthier, and more creative.

Book excerpt: Enlightenment has fascinated people for millenia. *Let Your Soul Sing* overturns the commonly held belief that enlightenment is a state of consciousness possible only for a few rare individuals living in a forest or monastery. It points out that enlightenment is in fact the most natural state of life, available to everyone through simple, effortless meditation techniques that expand human awareness and perception of the truly unified reality of life. This book follows the author s journey on the path of enlightenment and also gives accounts of athletes, artists, musicians, and people from all walks of life who have had spontaneous experiences of higher states of consciousness at some point. Many never had a framework to understand their experiences or to systematically develop them. *Let Your Soul Sing* lays out the systematic knowledge of seven states of consciousness and how they can be easily unfolded through the experience of transcendence. It highlights extensive scientific research that confirms the development of health and brain functioning gained through meditation, and also explains how individuals experiencing inner peace simultaneously contribute to the creation of world peace. The style is easy reading, with anecdotes, quotes, short poems, and analysis of recent world events woven throughout. Dr. Keith Wallace Founding President and Trustee of Maharishi University of Management, Dean of the College of Perfect Health and Professor of Physiology, and author of The Neurophysiology of Enlightenment. "This book is a profound gift. Beautifully written, it gently opens our eyes to who we truly are and guides us in accessing the divine wisdom, peace and bliss within each one of us. Ann Purcell weaves the teachings of Maharishi with her personal journey to provide the keys to transformation." Amy Hatkoff Child and family advocate, parenting educator, filmmaker, and author of The Inner World of Farm Animals; You are My World: How a Parent's Love Shapes a Baby's Mind; and How To Save The Children. As such, it is a roadmap to personal fulfillment, creative expression, and a gentler, kinder, more balanced world. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by Paul Brunton's years spent with sages in Asia, The Wisdom of the Overself and its companion volume The Hidden Teaching Beyond Yoga were written at the request of these remarkable teachers, who recognized that Brunton had a significant role to play in the transmission of traditional wisdom to the West. Here is a profound re-creation of these teachings, brought to life and made accessible by Brunton's insights. In print since the 1940s, Brunton's works are considered to be among the most comprehensive, clear, and practical guides on the path to enlightenment. Brunton unfolds the grand vision for human development by investigating consciousness as the source of all experience; how to move from ego-centered life to the transcendent reality; the interplay of karma, free will, and grace; the nature of evil and suffering; how to awaken intuition and penetrative insight; the passage through death to rebirth; and psychic experiences and mystic visions. He also provides seven ultramystic exercises to open the door to higher consciousness, including a healing meditation on the sun; practices for transforming the future, dream, and sleep; and a meditation on the timeless self. These techniques lead to the deepest spiritual realizations—to the true "Wisdom of the Overself." This new edition has been updated to incorporate Brunton's final revisions. It includes a new foreword plus supplementary reading material selected from the author's archives by the Paul Brunton Philosophic Foundation. Book excerpt: The hidden meanings of the Beatles’ most esoteric lyrics and sounds are revealed by a rare insider who spent two decades with the man who made “meditation,” “mantra,” and “yoga” household words: Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. “I absolutely love this book. Between the stories and the pictures, many I’ve not seen before, this is truly a spiritual journey.” —Chris O’Dell, author of Miss O’Dell, My Hard Days and Long Nights with The Beatles, The Stones, Bob Dylan, and the Women They Loved The spiritual journey of the Beatles is the story of an entire generation of visionaries in the sixties who transformed the world. The Beatles turned Western culture upside down and brought Indian philosophy to the West more effectively than any guru. The Inner Light illumines hidden meanings of the Beatles’ India-influenced lyrics and sounds, decoded by Susan Shumsky—a rare insider who spent two decades in the ashrams and six years on the personal staff of the Beatles’ mentor, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. “With clarity, depth, and impeccable research, an exceptionally comprehensive book filled with engaging tales and fresh insights that even diehard Beatles fans will find illuminating.” —Philip Goldberg, author of American Veda: From Emerson and The Beatles to Yoga and Meditation, How Indian Spirituality Changed the West This eye-opening book draws back the curtain on the Beatles’ experiments with psychedelics, meditation, chanting, and Indian music. Among many shocking revelations never before revealed, we discover who invented "raga rock" (not the Beatles), the real identity of rare Indian instruements and musicians on their tracks, which Beatle was the best meditator (not George), why the Beatles left India in a huff, John and George’s attempts to return, Maharishi’s accurate prediction, and who Sexy Sadie, Jojo, Bungalow Bill, Dear Prudence, Blackbird, My Sweet Lord, Hare Krishna, and the Fool on the Hill really were. “This book reminds us in illuminating fashion why Susan is the premier thinker about India’s key influence upon the direction of the Beatles’ art. In vivid and stirring detail, she traces the Fabs’ spiritual awakening from Bangor to Rishikesh and beyond.” —Kenneth Womack, author of John Lennon 1980: The Last Days in the Life Half a century later, the Beatles have sold more records than any other recording artist. A new generation wants to relive the magic of the flower-power era and is now discovering the message of this iconic band and its four superstars. For people of all nations and ages, the Beatles’ mystique lives on. The Inner Light is Susan Shumsky’s gift to their legacy.
