Book excerpt: Paul: Windows on His Thought and His World examines key aspects of Paul's thought contained in his authentic letters, and the social, ideological and historical factors that shaped it. The book considers some of the more controverted issues in Pauline studies, such as his views on the Jews and the Jewish law, sexual ethics, and women. Each topic is treated in a clear, concise and engaging manner. Chapter overviews, photographs, maps, diagrams, sidebars, and reflection questions enhance the book, which is a solid introduction to Paul and the modern relevance of his work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present St Paul's Cathedral, Christopher Wren's masterpiece, is the fourth religious building to occupy the site. Its location in the heart of the capital reflects its importance in the English church while the photographs of it burning during the Blitz forms one of the most powerful and familiar images of London during recent times. This substantial and richly illustrated study, published to mark the 1,400th anniversary of St Paul's, presents 42 scholarly contributions which approach the cathedral from a range of perspectives. All are supported by photographs, illustrations and plans of the exterior and interior of St Paul's, both past and present. Eight essays discuss the history of St Paul's, demonstrating the role of the cathedral in the formation of England's church and state from the 7th century onwards; nine essays examine the organisation and function of the cathedral during the Middle Ages, looking at, for example, the arrangement of the precinct, the tombs, the Dean's household during the 15th century, the liturgy and the archaeology. The remaining papers examine many aspects of Wren's cathedral, including its construction, fittings and embellishments, its estates and income, music and rituals, its place in London, its library, its role in the book trade and its reputation.

Book Looking through the Glass

Book excerpt: Windows, shadows and reflections have always fascinated me. We both look at windows, through them and past them. They bring light and a new vista but also allow us to peep at that which is beyond - the everyday and horizons yet unexplored. In playing my very small part in the shaping of the windows in the porch of Our Lady and St Thomas Church in Willington, Co. Durham., and the miracle of grace that a book by Sister Dorcy, which was the inspiration for the pictures, and fell into my hands, I entered into yet another journey. I pondered not just the mystery behind each picture but in the way they reveal the scene beyond. Beautifully etched, they take the eye and heart beyond the surface to the Altar and how Jesus is present to us today. Drawn to write on these I did so when a bout of serious illness visited me. This was a graced period for reflection. I pray the maybe a little sentence can bring a new light to that wonder that is our Mother who points to the source of all light Jesus HImself.

Book Teachings for an Unbelieving World

Download or read book Teachings for an Unbelieving World written by John Paul II and published by Ave Maria Press. This book was released on 2020-03-20 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of a first-place award for English translation editions from The Catholic Media Association. Teachings for an Unbelieving World is a newly discovered work written by St. John Paul II—then Archbishop Karol Wojtyła of Kraków—in the years just after Vatican II. He uses St. Paul’s sermon to the people of Athens in Acts 17 as a framework for articulating the faith in a culture of skepticism and unbelief. These thirteen brief reflections provide compelling teaching for Catholics in today’s post-Christian world and give fresh insight into JPII’s pontificate. This is the first English-language publication of this important work. St. John Paul II composed these thirteen reflections at a unique point of convergence in history—the closing of Vatican II in 1965 and the 1966 observance of one thousand years of Christianity in Poland. Teachings for an Unbelieving World is an extended meditation on Acts 17 where Paul speaks to the cultural elite of Athens after he observed an altar of an unknown god in the city. Quoting from both the Bible and the documents of Vatican II, John Paul II draws timely wisdom from the apostle’s mission to bring the truth of the Gospel to a worldly culture of sophistication and disbelief, one not unlike our own. The future pope reveals Paul’s memorable encounter as an enduring framework to boldly present the core truths of Catholic faith to those living under Poland’s communist regime. In so doing, JPII demonstrates how relevant Paul’s words are today and equips us to meet the challenges of proclaiming the faith in our times. Teachings for an Unbelieving World affirms the continuity of Catholic faith about: humanity’s place in God’s creation; our search for meaning, truth, and freedom; addressing a culture of unbelief; the gift of redemption in Jesus Christ; the grace of the Holy Spirit; the role of the Church in the world; the power of the Eucharist; the redemptive and self-giving nature of human love; and the importance of prayer.

Book Minneapolis Madams

  • Author : Penny A. Petersen
  • Publisher : U of Minnesota Press
  • Release : 2013-06-20

Download or read book Minneapolis Madams written by Penny A. Petersen and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2013-06-20 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sex, money, and politics—no, it’s not a thriller novel. Minneapolis Madams is the surprising and riveting account of the Minneapolis red-light district and the powerful madams who ran it. Penny Petersen brings to life this nearly forgotten chapter of Minneapolis history, tracing the story of how these “houses of ill fame” rose to prominence in the late nineteenth century and then were finally shut down in the early twentieth century. In their heyday Minneapolis brothels were not only open for business but constituted a substantial economic and political force in the city. Women of independent means, madams built custom bordellos to suit their tastes and exerted influence over leading figures and politicians. Petersen digs deep into city archives, period newspapers, and other primary sources to illuminate the Minneapolis sex trade and its opponents, bringing into focus the ideologies and economic concerns that shaped the lives of prostitutes, the men who used their services, and the social-purity reformers who sought to eradicate their trade altogether. Usually written off as deviants, madams were actually crucial components of a larger system of social control and regulation. These entrepreneurial women bought real estate, hired well-known architects and interior decorators to design their bordellos, and played an important part in the politics of the developing city. Petersen argues that we cannot understand Minneapolis unless we can grasp the scope and significance of its sex trade. She also provides intriguing glimpses into racial interactions within the vice economy, investigating an African American madam who possibly married into one of the city’s most prestigious families. Fascinating and rigorously researched, Minneapolis Madams is a true detective story and a key resource for anyone interested in the history of women, sexuality, and urban life in Minneapolis.
