Book Reflection

Download or read book Reflection written by Michael Zilbering and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-03-14 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book Reflection contains a short memoir about the forceful containment of a young Jewish boy in Nazi concentration camps from during the Second World War. He is one of millions who went through the burning hell of concentration camps where for the first time he really met up with human grief, put-down, cruelty and fight for survival every day, hour and minute of life. The lesson of Holocaust about the nature of human evil, the need for vigilance and the importance of individual responsibility are needed now more than ever. We live in dangerous times when echoes of our past resonate everywhere. We are again in the world of war, in a world where madmen threaten America and Jews. The latter part of the book is a collection of published articles of contemporary political, economical, and social outlook. These writings are relevant in the present just like they were in the past.

Book The SAGE Handbook of Rhetorical Studies

Download or read book The SAGE Handbook of Rhetorical Studies written by Andrea A. Lunsford and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2008-10-29 with total page 1013 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The SAGE Handbook of Rhetorical Studies surveys the latest advances in rhetorical scholarship, synthesizing theories and practices across major areas of study in the field and pointing the way for future studies. Edited by Andrea A. Lunsford and Associate Editors Kirt H. Wilson and Rosa A. Eberly, the Handbook aims to introduce a new generation of students to rhetorical study and provide a deeply informed and ready resource for scholars currently working in the field. Key Features: Brings together scholars from across the disciplines of Speech, Communication, English, and Writing Studies. While rhetoric is by definition interdisciplinary, self-identified scholars in the field are most often institutionally separated from one another. This Handbook bridges this divide by providing a refreshing range of transdisciplinary views on the nature, status, definition, and scope of rhetoric today. Offers a thorough-going overview of rhetorical studies today. Organized in four sections—Historical Studies in Rhetoric; Rhetoric Across the Disciplines; Rhetoric and Pedagogy, and Rhetoric and Public Discourse—the volume provides a single resource for engaging rhetorical studies. Underscores the importance of rhetoric to education across a wide range of disciplines as well as to effective participation in public arenas. Thus the volume connects rhetoric′s long teaching tradition to an activist agenda for informed civic engagement. Addresses methodological and theoretical difficulties and offers means of negotiating them. Provides one of the first introductions to rhetorical studies across cultures and to the related debates concerning comparative and contrastive rhetorics.

Book Critique Security and Power

Download or read book Critique Security and Power written by Tara McCormack and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-09-10 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to engage with contemporary security discourses from a critical perspective. It argues that rather than being a radical, analytical outlook, much critical security theory fails to fulfil its promise to pose a challenge to contemporary power relations. In general, 'critical security' theories and dialogues are understood to be progressive theoretical frameworks that offer a trenchant evaluation and analysis of contemporary international and national security policy. Tara McCormack investigates the limitations of contemporary critical and emancipatory theorising and its relationship with contemporary power structures. Beginning with a theoretical critique and moving into a case study of the critical approaches to the break up of the former Yugoslavia, this book assesses the policies adopted by the international community at the time to show that much contemporary critical security theory and discourse in fact mirrors shifts in post-Cold War international and national security policy. Far from challenging international power inequalities and offering an emancipatory framework, contemporary critical security theory inadvertently ends up serving as a theoretical justification for an unequal international order. This book will be of much interest to students of critical security studies, international relations and security studies. Tara McCormack is Lecturer in International Politics at the University of Leicester and has a PhD in International Relations from the University of Westminster.

Book Development in an Insecure and Gendered World

Download or read book Development in an Insecure and Gendered World written by Jacqueline Leckie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Millennium Declaration was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2000 and explicit targets were set to eradicate key problems in human development by 2015. This collection focuses specifically on the goals relating to gender issues that are problematic for women. The most relevant and contentious is that of promoting gender equality and empowering women. The book provides an overview of this and investigates literature that considers how gender is central to achieving the other goals. The contributors distinctively consider gender in the context of human security (or insecurity); the reduction and elimination of conflict would seem to be central to achieving targets. One of the major themes of this collection is whether gender insecurity has been exacerbated in an increasingly insecure world. The book considers not only military and civilian conflict in the contemporary era but also security in the broader sense of human development, such as environmental, reproductive and economic security.

Book The United States in a Troubled World

Download or read book The United States in a Troubled World written by Sebastião C. Velasco e Cruz and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-12-06 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an overview of the main changes in the United States' foreign policy in response to the transformations in the international order in the last decades. If, after the end of the Cold War, the USA invested in the universalization of market economy and in the strengthening of its military supremacy, new developments demanded reorientations in the country’s foreign strategy. The controversial military interventions in Afghanistan and Iraq, the 2008 economic crisis, the rise of the BRICs (Brazil, Russia, India and China) and the rise of right-wing populism altered the global political landscape and demanded new responses from the most powerful country in the world. This volume brings together nine essays in which the founding member of the World International Studies Committee, Sebastião C. Velasco e Cruz, analyzes how the United States’ foreign policy responded to the growing challenges posed by this changing international order, discussing topics such as: The evolution of the American geopolitical strategy after the end of the Cold War How US foreign policy reacted to challenges to security and dilemmas of the international order Barack Obama's foreign policy and world politics Donald Trump and the rise of populism in the USA US relations with BRICs and Latin America The United States in a Troubled World: Essays on Interpretation will be of interest to international relations and political science researchers both within and outside the United States.

Book Caribbean Security in the Age of Terror

Download or read book Caribbean Security in the Age of Terror written by Ivelaw L. Griffith and published by Ian Randle Publishers. This book was released on 2004 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The security issues which have come into prominence since the September 11 terrorist attack in the USA provide both the starting point and the focus for this comprehensive survey of contemporary security issues in the Caribbean. This volume assesses the impact of the 9/11 terrorist attack on Caribbean states and examines the institutional and operational terrorism response capacity of security agencies in the region. However, understanding security challenge and change in the Caribbean context requires a broad-based multidimensional approach; terrorism for the small, open and vulnerable nation states of the Caribbean region is a real security issue but even more so, is a range of untraditional threats like crime, drug trafficking, territorial disputes, environmental degradation and the rapid spread of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. How these states adapt policies and practices to adjust to the new regional and global circumstances represent the challenge and the change.
