Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A. H. Louie’s The Reflection of Life: Functional Entailment and Imminence in Relational Biology is a continuation of the exploratory journey in relational biology which began with his 2009 monograph More Than Life Itself: A Synthetic Continuation in Relational Biology. The theme of his first book was ‘What is life?’; the theme of this sequel is “How do two life forms interact?” Biology is a subject concerned with organization of relations. Relational biology is the approach that advocates ‘function dictates structure”, rather than ‘structure implies function’. It is mathematics decoded into biological realizations. The book demonstrates some of the powers of the approach of relational biology, and illustrates how pertinent problems in biology can be better addressed this way. In the first volume the theory was developed by using partially ordered sets, lattices, simulations, models, Aristotle’s four causes, graphs, categories, simple and complex systems, anticipatory systems, and metabolism-repair [(M,R)-] systems. Here in the second volume, these tools are expanded to employ set-valued mappings, adjacency matrices, random graphs, and interacting entailment networks. The theory of set-valued mappings culminates in the imminence mapping, which equips the further investigation of functional entailment in complex relational networks. Imminence in (M,R)-networks that model living systems addresses the topics of biogenesis and natural selection. Interacting (M,R)-networks with mutually entailing processes serve as models in the study of symbiosis and pathophysiology. The formalism also provides a natural framework for a relational theory of virology and oncology. This book will serve researchers and graduate students in mathematics and biology.

Book Reflections Ii the Magic Beyond the Pain

Download or read book Reflections Ii the Magic Beyond the Pain written by Dalia and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2019-08-21 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reflects life- each and every one of us in our journeys as all of us inevitably end in the same place. It is our journeys, individually and those we share time and space with, along with the many souls on four legs, that define the happiness inside. It is also imperative that we find ways to help the world we live in- for those many starfish that ended on the beach, and for each of those starfish that we can throw back in the water,- well, one more life we have saved. Inevitably, it is the lives we save that actually save us- aren’t they? The fill our souls with energy..with that special feeling that we mean something that we actually are all connected but to live life with purpose- well that is ultimately the most fulfilling of all important feelings. To each of you I hope you fill those moments in the simplist of ways- giving back, and pays forward to become the power and energy that will save us all..

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: J. Stafford Wright calls it the black sheep of the Bible. Some interpreters stumble over the Book of Ecclesiastes; those whose writings appear in this collection see an important, unified message. 'Reflecting with Solomon' gathers some of the best scholarship on Ecclesiastes. The result is a solid introduction to Old Testament Wisdom Literature and more detail for study, preaching, and teaching than is found in most commentaries. Some articles cover the authorship, themes, difficulties, and overall structure in Ecclesiastes; others analyze specific texts. Among the contributors are Roland E. Murphy, Emeritus Professor of Biblical Studies, Duke University; Donald R. Glenn, Chair of Old Testament Studies, Dallas Seminary; Wayne A. Brindle, Associate Professor of Biblical Studies, Liberty University; Michael A. Eaton, Lecturer in Old Testament, Baptist Theological College of Southern Africa; and the late Robert Gordis of Jewish Theological Seminary of America.

Book When Breath Becomes Air

Download or read book When Breath Becomes Air written by Paul Kalanithi and published by Random House. This book was released on 2016-01-12 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • PULITZER PRIZE FINALIST • This inspiring, exquisitely observed memoir finds hope and beauty in the face of insurmountable odds as an idealistic young neurosurgeon attempts to answer the question What makes a life worth living? NAMED ONE OF PASTE’S BEST MEMOIRS OF THE DECADE • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The New York Times Book Review • People • NPR • The Washington Post • Slate • Harper’s Bazaar • Time Out New York • Publishers Weekly • BookPage Finalist for the PEN Center USA Literary Award in Creative Nonfiction and the Books for a Better Life Award in Inspirational Memoir At the age of thirty-six, on the verge of completing a decade’s worth of training as a neurosurgeon, Paul Kalanithi was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. One day he was a doctor treating the dying, and the next he was a patient struggling to live. And just like that, the future he and his wife had imagined evaporated. When Breath Becomes Air chronicles Kalanithi’s transformation from a naïve medical student “possessed,” as he wrote, “by the question of what, given that all organisms die, makes a virtuous and meaningful life” into a neurosurgeon at Stanford working in the brain, the most critical place for human identity, and finally into a patient and new father confronting his own mortality. What makes life worth living in the face of death? What do you do when the future, no longer a ladder toward your goals in life, flattens out into a perpetual present? What does it mean to have a child, to nurture a new life as another fades away? These are some of the questions Kalanithi wrestles with in this profoundly moving, exquisitely observed memoir. Paul Kalanithi died in March 2015, while working on this book, yet his words live on as a guide and a gift to us all. “I began to realize that coming face to face with my own mortality, in a sense, had changed nothing and everything,” he wrote. “Seven words from Samuel Beckett began to repeat in my head: ‘I can’t go on. I’ll go on.’” When Breath Becomes Air is an unforgettable, life-affirming reflection on the challenge of facing death and on the relationship between doctor and patient, from a brilliant writer who became both.
