Book Duelling the Russian Cultural Imagination and Masculinity in Crisis

Download or read book Duelling the Russian Cultural Imagination and Masculinity in Crisis written by Amanda DiGioia and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-12 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, written from a feminist perspective, uses the focus of duelling to discuss the nature of masculinity in Russia. It traces the development of duelling and masculinity historically from the time of Peter the Great onwards, considers how duelling and masculinity have been represented in both literature and film and assesses the high emphasis given in Soviet times to gender equality, arguing that this was a failed experiment that ran counter to Russian tradition. It examines how duelling continues to be a feature of life in contemporary Russia and relates the situation in Russia to wider scholarship on the nature of masculinity more generally. Overall, the book contends that Russia’s valuing of a strong, militaristic form of masculinity is a major problem.

Book The Duel in Early Modern England

Download or read book The Duel in Early Modern England written by Markku Peltonen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-01-30 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arguments about the place and practice of the duel in early modern England were widespread. The distinguished intellectual historian Markku Peltonen examines this debate, and show how the moral and ideological status of duelling was discussed within a much larger cultural context of courtesy, civility and politeness. The advocates of the duel, following Italian and French examples, contended that it maintained and enhanced politeness; its critics by contrast increasingly severed duelling from civility, and this separation became part of a vigorous attempt in the late seventeenth century and beyond to redefine civility, politeness and indeed the nature and evolution of Englishness. To understand the duel is to understand much more fully some crucial issues in the cultural and ideological history of Stuart England, and Markku Peltonen's study will thus engage the attention of a very wide audience of historians and cultural and literary scholars.

In addition to the informative bibliography, the "Notes on Fencing and Duelling" section fascinates readers with its accounts of duels as reported in various publications of the time. One story from the September 21, 1890, edition of the Sunday Times startlingly reveals, "After a French duel, if 'honor has been satisfied, ' and nobody has been assassinated, a grand breakfast usually takes place."

Book The Duel in European History

Download or read book The Duel in European History written by Victor Kiernan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-07-15 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries, duelling played an integral role in the preservation of the aristocratic order in Europe, defying attempts by both church and state to ban the practice. Moreover, the romance and drama of the duel has made it an enduring fixture in films, literature, and the theatre. In The Duel in European History, renowned historian Victor Kiernan writes with his characteristic wit and insight of duelling's evolution from its medieval origins – when it was regarded as a badge of rank - to the early twentieth century, by which time it was seen as an irrational anachronism. In doing so, he shows how the duelling tradition was something unique to Europe and its colonies, and, in its contribution to the development of the officer corps, played a key part in shaping European military power. Drawing on a vast range of historical and cultural sources, this is the definitive account of a violent ritual that continues to fascinate even today.

Book Mock Ritual in the Modern Era

Download or read book Mock Ritual in the Modern Era written by Reginald McGinnis and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-09-02 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mock Ritual in the Modern Era explores the complex interrelations between ritual and mockery, the latter of which is not infrequently the unofficial face of claims to rationality. McGinnis and Smyth consider how the mocking and parodying of ritual often associated with modern rationalism may itself become ritualized, and other ways in which supposedly sham ritual may survive its "outing." This volume traces the evolution of "mock ritual" in various forms throughout the modern era, as found in literary, historical, and anthropological texts as well as encyclopedias, newspapers, and films. Mock Ritual in the Modern Era places famous eighteenth- and nineteenth-century authors in dialogue with contemporary popular culture, from Diderot, Sterne, and Flaubert to the TV shows Survivor and Judge Judy, and from Voltaire to the Charlie Hebdo tragedy of 2015. Ritualistic and mock ritualistic aspects of comedy and ridicule are considered along with those, notably, of sexuality, medicine, art, education, and justice.
