Book Critical Reflections on Cities in Southeast Asia

Download or read book Critical Reflections on Cities in Southeast Asia written by Tim Bunnell and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critical Reflections draws together the multi-disciplinary research of scholars working in/on cities across Southeast Asia. The fourteen essays collected in the volume are organised into three thematic sections: (re)conceptualisation, competition and intervention. Collectively, these reflections contribute to and interrogate the expanding urban and regional studies literature. The volume constitutes a critical corrective to the existing literature which all-too-often seeks to diagnose contemporary urban trends everywhere from a small number of, mostly Western, "paradigmatic cases". Yet, while acknowledging the increasing interconnectedness and shared global orientation of most cities in Southeast Asia, the volume is wary of positing an equally generalising regional model. Individually, these essays attend to the diversity of contemporary urban experiences in Southeast Asia.

Book Region Nation and Homeland

Download or read book Region Nation and Homeland written by Miriam Coronel Ferrer and published by ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute. This book was released on 2020-01-20 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Movements tell stories of oppression and liberation. They critique the power relations that exist. They offer alternative visions of the homeland they hope to build. This volume looks at the Moro and Cordillera movements as told in their own words. Within and among these movement organizations in the Philippines, their constructed identities and claims for demanding the right to self-determination differed and evolved over time. The author shows the significant intertextuality in the discourse of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, which broke away from the Moro National Liberation Front. She traces the drift to heightened ethnonationalism in the case of the Cordillera Peoples’ Liberation Army when it split from the national democratic Cordillera People’s Democratic Front. She reflects on where these mobilizations are now, and the strands of discourses that have remained salient in current times.

Book Democracy and Nationalism in Southeast Asia

Download or read book Democracy and Nationalism in Southeast Asia written by Jacques Bertrand and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-29 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jacques Bertrand offers a comparative-historical analysis of five nationalist conflicts over several decades in Southeast Asia. Using a theoretical framework to explain variance over time and across cases, he challenges and refines existing debates on democracy's impact and shows that, while democratization significantly reduces violent insurgency over time, it often introduces pernicious effects that fail to resolve conflict and contribute to maintaining deep nationalist grievances. Drawing on years of detailed fieldwork, Bertrand analyses the paths that led from secessionist mobilization to a range of outcomes. These include persistent state repression for Malay Muslims in Thailand, low level violence under a top-down 'special autonomy' for Papuans, reframing of mobilizing from nationalist to indigenous peoples in the Cordillera, a long and broken path to an untested broad autonomy for the Moros and relatively successful broad autonomy for Acehnese.

Book The Routledge International Handbook of Language Education Policy in Asia

Download or read book The Routledge International Handbook of Language Education Policy in Asia written by Andy Kirkpatrick and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-17 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This must-have handbook offers a comprehensive survey of the field. It reviews the language education policies of Asia, encompassing 30 countries sub-divided by regions, namely East, Southeast, South and Central Asia, and considers the extent to which these are being implemented and with what effect. The most recent iteration of language education policies of each of the countries is described and the impact and potential consequence of any change is critically considered. Each country chapter provides a historical overview of the languages in use and language education policies, examines the ideologies underpinning the language choices, and includes an account of the debates and controversies surrounding language and language education policies, before concluding with some predictions for the future.
