Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reflections on the Art of War "Peace," says Segur, "is the dream of the wise; war is the history of man." "But such an art is war! So fearful is the consequence of error, so terrible the responsibility of a general. Strongly and wisely did Napoleon speak when he told Joseph he must give himself up entirely to the business, labouring day and night, thinking of nothing else." - Napier. "When I first applied myself to the writing of these Lives," says Plutarch, "it was for the sake of others; but I pursue that study for my own sake, availing myself of history as of a mirror, from which I learn to adjust and regulate my own conduct. For it is like living and conversing with these illustrious men, when I invite as it were, and receive them, one after another, under my roof; when I consider how great and wonderful they were, and select from their actions the most memorable and glorious." "Ye Gods! what greater pleasure? what happier road to virtue?" About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient and Modern History History, for Catholic conception, is a history of Christian civilization, or of the ancient civilizations which preceded, as transformed and resurrected by it. This history converges in ancient times to that centre of ancient civiliza tion which became, and has ever since remained, the focus of the Christian faith. It diverges from that centre to the nations of later time as they became subject to its influence, and have remained to the present day, unconsciously, it may be in some cases, controlled by it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Ancient and Modern History IN bringing out an American edition of this wolk, the publisher were desirous 1 ct only to furnish a valuable work for general readers. But also to make it in point of size and price as well adapted to the wants of public instruction as they believed it to be in intrinsic merit In complying with their request to revise the work with this view, the present editor has made a few slight curtailments - principally in the first part of the volume of Ancient History - which could be made with out suppressing or in any way distorting or impairing any material fact or statement. In the English edition, all that is to be found relating to the history of the United States amounts to two or three pages, interspersed in the history of England. In the place of these meager notices, the present editor has appended to the volume of Modern History a distinct and special chapter, giving to the history of the United States its proportion ate place in general history, and to which 'it is certainly entitled in 1 vork designed for public instruction in this country. He trusts that his sketch will be found to contain a fair and clear view of the leading events of our history. Book The History of Sprinkling

Download or read book The History of Sprinkling written by Louis Charles Wilson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Sprinkling: Being a Compilation of the Best Thoughts of Standard Authors, Historians and Lexicographers of Ancient and Modern Times, Together With Reflections by the Author; Designed to Prove That "Sprinkling for Baptism" Is Not Authorized by the Bible, Making a Valu The following pages contain the testimony of men who have been foremost in recording ecclesiastical history, in criticising what has been written, and in editing lexicons that give us the meaning of words as used by the world's best writers and speakers. If the statements submitted by these men concerning the "History of Sprinkling" are untrue, then their histories and their dictionaries are unreliable, and we are left without the means of proving anything, either pro or con, on this, or any subject on which they discourse. This, no reasonable person can believe for one moment. There are thousands of persons, reasonably well informed on many other subjects, who never thought of the importance that attaches to immersion as taught in the New Testament, nor with what it stands connected. This want of proper information grows out of erroneous teaching and a want of careful reading. Immersion is called "a Church ordinance," a thing that cannot be, since immersion was in practice before the Church was organized, and hence could not have been established by the Church. Christ never gave the Church power to ordain anything pertaining to man's salvation save the appointing of qualified men to fill certain offices. The emblematic grave (immersion) is the womb from which the Church was born. Immersion in the New Testament is never associated with the Church. It is directly associated with "righteousness," with "all authority," with "faith," with "repentance," with "remission of sins," with "the name of Christ," with "the gift of the Holy Spirit," with "regeneration," with "the new birth," with "salvation," with "the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit," with "cleansing," with "a holy life," with "the death of Christ," and with "the resurrection." To tear it away from these divinely associated objects and relate it to the Church only, as an ordinance, is to do violence to the gospel preached by Christ's embassadors.
