Book Timeless Service in Gamma Sigma Omega Chapter

Download or read book Timeless Service in Gamma Sigma Omega Chapter written by Emma Jean Hawkins Conyers and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2013 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the beginning in 1943, the mission of the Gamma Sigma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority has been to cultivate scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among college women, and to be of service to all mankind. Timeless Service in Gamma Sigma Omega Chapter chronicles the history of the women who sojourned in the life of one chapter of the first Black female Greek letter organization and the events that impacted their journey in Savannah, Georgia, from 1943 to 2012. Emma Jean Hawkins Conyers, former president of the GSO Chapter, begins with the story of Adeline Graham, a white philanthropist who bequeathed funds to the chapter for use in establishing an orphanage for Negro children, and reveals how the chapter responded to the challenge. As she continues the chapter's history through the years, Conyers shares notable details on members, awards, community projects, and events that helped to preserve a legacy that endures to this day. Timeless Service in Gamma Sigma Omega Chapter captures the spirit of unity, sisterhood, and service that still drives the sorority to fulfill the mission after commencing nearly seven decades ago.

Book The Alpha Kappa Alpha Presence in Southwest Mississippi

Download or read book The Alpha Kappa Alpha Presence in Southwest Mississippi written by Lorraine Banks Gayden and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-03-07 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book chronicles the timeless service of Phi Mu Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha from its humble beginnings as Ivy Omega Interest Group in 1998, to its chartering on January 15, 2000, to its present status as a thriving chapter living out the sorority's motto to be "Supreme in Service to All Mankind". This history book was a time-intensive and labor-intensive assignment for women who are already busy, career-minded, and community-service oriented , but it truly became a labor or love which International President Carolyn House Stewart requested of each chapter of the sorority. Without her directive, this book, in all certainty, would never have been written. The project has indelibly etched valuable lessons in the minds of the historian and chapter members--the need for archiving and documenting the chapter's programs, activities, events, and projects. The assignment also refocused attention on previous and current international initiatives issued by each international president. According to historian Earnestine Green McNealey, Ph.D., author of the sorority's definitive history book The Pearls of Alpha Kappa Alpha: A History of America's First Black Sorority, until the lion tells its own story, the story will always glorify the hunter. This project forced chapters across the United States and in other countries to tell our own stories from their perspectives and in the context of historical events and social issues facing the communities we serve. Hopefully, it also reinforced the raison d'etre for every member, every chapter, every region, and the international sisterhood. The beginning and evolving history of Phi Mu Omega is captured for generations of young women yet to come so that it might inspire and motivate them to become women with a desire to serve all mankind.

Book Reflections on an Ageless Wisdom

Download or read book Reflections on an Ageless Wisdom written by Joy Mills and published by Quest Books. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern Theosophy expresses the ancient wisdom tradition found in all religions. When H. P. Blavatsky, founder of the Theosophical Society in 1875, told English journalist A. P. Sinnett she had gained her paranormal knowledge from more evolved beings called the Mahatmas, Sinnett asked to communicate with them himself. The result was a remarkable correspondence carried on from 1880 to 1885 with Mahatmas Khoot Hoomi and Morya. Recorded in The Mahatma Letters to A. P. Sinnett, the answers of these Teachers form an essential part of Theosophical literature. At the time, the Letters stormed the bastions of racial and religious prejudice, and they continue to fascinate those seeking to probe the mysteries of the universe and the nature of consciousness. Here is the most comprehensive, magisterial discussion of The Mahatma Letters since they were first published in 1924. Eminent Theosophist Joy Mills bases her commentary on Vincente Hao Chin’s 1999 edition of the Letters, helpfully arranged chronologically to enable following the exposition as it originally unfolded. Mills quotes Sinnett in emphasizing that the Mahatmas’ purpose was not to put the world into possession of occult knowledge but to train those who proved qualified . . . so that they might ascend the path of spiritual progress. Her focus, then, is on not only knowledge of the magnificent Occult Science but more significantly the ethical and moral values we must embrace to be of service to the world. She offers her reflections on over 140 letters in the hope that they may prove useful to fellow-students on the journey toward the spiritual heights. May these letters call you as they have continued to call me to keep on exploring, for truly there is no other way to go!

There is a rich diversity in range of form, expressiveness, experience, and passion. Reading through this work is a journey through the undercurrents of experience that reflect on living through the charged realities of the ‘post-colonial’ decades of our modern African not only with an intimate Pan-African awareness of history but also with a poignant sensibility of brotherhood, sisterhood and belonging. Clearly evocative of the age the poet has lived through, these poems have both a sharp clear eye on history, and an abiding tender trust in human relationships.” – Abena P.A. Busia, professor of literature, poet, and Ghanaian ambassador to Brazil. “Akwasi Aidoo weaves together in warm and passionate verses our timeless dreams of freedom, dignity and humanity which shall neither be deferred nor deterred regardless of what they say and what their SAPs (‘sanitize African passion’!) and Davos prescribe. Enjoy the dreams of ‘life and joy’ that is the Rhythms of Dignity. Akwasi is one of Africa’s foremost poets. Akwasi, you make us proud as Africans and as a part of humanity in what you sing and what you pen. May your Rhythms continue to inspire us and light the road to freedom.” – Issa Shivji, Emeritus Professor, University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. “In this collection of poems covering Africa, meditation and memory and everything in between, we hear Akwasi Aidoo’s voice mingled with the voices of our ancestors, our past and our future, calling to us to reflect as ‘life streaming hurriedly to us’. Woven within the lyricism of the words, the poems are a political and social commentary on life that evoke Langston Hughes and reminds us of the stories we tell and are told about us. Buy it, read it and be discomfited and comforted in turn.” – Ayisha Osori, author of Love Does Not Win Elections.

Book In Search of Sisterhood

Download or read book In Search of Sisterhood written by Paula J. Giddings and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2009-10-06 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Search of Sisterhood is the definitive history of the largest Black women's organization in the United States, and is filled with compelling, fascinating anecdotes told by the Delta Sigma Theta members themselves, illustrated with rare early photographs of the Delta women. This book contains the story of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority (DST), and details the increasing involvement of Black women in the political, social, and economic affairs of America. Founded at a time when liberal arts education was widely seen as either futile, dangerous, or impractical for Blacks—and especially Black women—DST is, in Giddings's words, a "compelling reflection of Black women's aspirations for themselves and for society." Giddings notes that unlike other organizations with racial goals, Delta Sigma Theta was created to change and benefit individuals rather than society. As a sorority, it was formed to bring women together as sisters, but at the same time to address the divisive, often class-related issues confronting Black women in our society. There is, in Giddings's eyes, a tension between these goals that makes Delta Sigma Theta a fascinating microcosm of the struggles of Black women and their organizations. DST members have included Mary McLeod Bethune, Mary Church Terrell, Margaret Murray Washington, Shirley Chisholm, Barbara Jordan, and, on the cultural side, Leontyne Price, Lena Horne, Ruby Dee, Judith Jamison, and Roberta Flack.
