Book Reflections of a Tortured Soul

Download or read book Reflections of a Tortured Soul written by Eric Mastel and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011-08-01 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With age come wisdom and understanding. It's very unfortunate that we are designed in a way that we have to achieve a certain degree of years before we are able to reflect upon our lives. Only then we can truly appreciate the pain and sorrow that our choices can cause another. This book is a collection of writings, done over the years. Some for joyous moments and others not so. The idea of this book was inspired by the artists I know. I have always written to help process some of my own emotions. Not for a moment do I consider myself an artist or a poet. Others that have read some of my work seem to identify with it for their own personal reasons.

Book excerpt: How do you describe the world around you? How do you make sense of it all? For me, I use the written word. Soul Reflections is my diary of poetry I started at the age of twelve. These poems embody the myriad words and feelings stored in my heart, in my spirit, and in my soul; these poems represent a contemplative introspection of the myriad of thoughts, beliefs, and opinions locked away in my conscious and subconscious mind. In this book, I have included poems of happiness, pain, grief, and joy. With each turn of the page, you will experience poems addressing the human condition, the composition of my world, social and political change, and my philosophy of life. Soul Reflections is a testament to my ongoing dialogue with God and my exploration of Christianity and theology.

Book excerpt: A Holocaust survivor's surprising and thought-provoking study of forgiveness, justice, compassion, and human responsibility, featuring contributions from the Dalai Lama, Harry Wu, Cynthia Ozick, Primo Levi, and more. You are a prisoner in a concentration camp. A dying Nazi soldier asks for your forgiveness. What would you do? While imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp, Simon Wiesenthal was taken one day from his work detail to the bedside of a dying member of the SS. Haunted by the crimes in which he had participated, the soldier wanted to confess to--and obtain absolution from--a Jew. Faced with the choice between compassion and justice, silence and truth, Wiesenthal said nothing. But even years after the way had ended, he wondered: Had he done the right thing? What would you have done in his place? In this important book, fifty-three distinguished men and women respond to Wiesenthal's questions. They are theologians, political leaders, writers, jurists, psychiatrists, human rights activists, Holocaust survivors, and victims of attempted genocides in Bosnia, Cambodia, China and Tibet. Their responses, as varied as their experiences of the world, remind us that Wiesenthal's questions are not limited to events of the past.

Yet literary, film, and video materials illuminate problems and suggest ideas to which teachers can actively respond. This book offers teacher educators a variety of resources for articulating a critical pedagogy and suggests an alternative to the technical, job training approach to teacher education by providing a unique educational curricula that illuminates issues of power, ideology, and culture.

Book Werner Herzog

    Book Details:
  • Author : Joshua Lund
  • Publisher : University of Illinois Press
  • Release : 2020-07-06

  • Pages : 372 pages

Download or read book Werner Herzog written by Joshua Lund and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2020-07-06 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Werner Herzog's protean imagination has produced a filmography that is nothing less than a sustained meditation on the modern human condition. Though Herzog takes his topics from around the world, the Americas have provided the setting and subject matter for iconic works ranging from Aquirre, The Wrath of God and Fitzcarraldo to Grizzly Man. Joshua Lund offers the first systematic interpretation of Werner Herzog's Americas-themed works, illuminating the director's career as a political filmmaker—a label Herzog himself rejects. Lund draws on materialist and post-colonial approaches to argue that Herzog's American work confronts us with the circulation, distribution, accumulation, application, and negotiation of power that resides, quietly, at the center of his films. By operating beyond conventional ideological categories, Herzog renders political ideas in radically unfamiliar ways while fearlessly confronting his viewers with questions of world-historical significance. His maddeningly opaque viewpoint challenges us to rethink discovery and conquest, migration and exploitation, resource extraction, slavery, and other foundational traumas of the contemporary human condition.
