Book Reflections and Poetry to Ponder

Download or read book Reflections and Poetry to Ponder written by Diane Hicks White and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-08-10 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My poetry can best be described as a personal journey lived through depression. From childhood through adulthood I have existed with depression. I have always enjoyed reading and so with reading, the idea of writing poetry came to mind. Being able to express my emotions has played a big part on my road to recovery. Seeing people like myself has helped me give more understanding of how depression affects the mind. Through my poetry I have been able to talk of these emotions through faith in others who have helped me and through my faith in God who has never left me. I try to end my poetry not in negativity but with a purposeful emotion that will give the reader hope, a hope that he or she will someday reach, that pinnacle in their lives that will help them to see beyond that hopelessness of depression. Book Now Do You Know Where You Are

Download or read book Now Do You Know Where You Are written by Dana Levin and published by Copper Canyon Press. This book was released on 2022-07-05 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Levin’s luminous latest reckons with the disorientation of contemporary America. . . . Through the fog of doubt, Levin summons ferocious intellect and musters hard-won clairvoyance.”—Publishers Weekly, starred review Dana Levin’s fifth collection is a brave and perceptive companion, walking with the reader through the disorientations of personal and collective transformation. Now Do You Know Where You Are investigates how great change calls the soul out of the old lyric, “to be a messenger―to record whatever wanted to stream through.” Levin works in a variety of forms, calling on beloveds and ancestors, great thinkers and religions―convened by Levin’s own spun-of-light wisdom and intellectual hospitality―balancing clear-eyed forensics of the past with vatic knowledge of the future. “So many bodies a soul has to press through: personal, familial, regional, national, global, planetary, cosmic― // ‘Now do you know where you are?’” “Dana Levin is the modern-day master of the em-dash.”—New York Times Magazine "The book weaves in and out of prose, and it’s no wonder that the haibun is the generative form in these pages. A form invented by Basho so that he could move from the prose of his travelogues to the quick intensities of haiku, back and forth. Emily Dickinson does the same thing in her letters. And because this is a poet of the western United States—born outside of Los Angeles and raised in the Mojave, then two decades in Santa Fe, now in middle America, St. Louis—maybe it’s right to think of her work in terms of storm clouds: if the prose is an anvil cloud, the flash of poetry at the end is lightning.”—Jesse Nathan, McSweeney’s

Book excerpt: Railsplitter, the seventh collection from Pulitzer Prize Finalist and Guggenheim Fellow Maurice Manning, envisions the role of poetry in the life of Abraham Lincoln. Manning, who writes each piece in Lincoln’s persona, provides a lasting reflection on how poetry guided and shaped the President’s mind while leading a divided nation. Equal parts prophetic and rich in both rural folklore and literary allusions—from Shakespeare, to Whitman, to Poe, to the comedic—Railsplitter transcends the darkness of Lincoln’s time, to imagine a new lore entirely—one comprised of buzzard feather quills, horse treats in a top hat, and finally, a fateful bullet. Lincoln, who was born nearby to Maurice Manning’s childhood home in Kentucky, is alive again, in new form.

Download or read book Poetry Reflections written by JB Frost and published by BookRix. This book was released on 2020-09-27 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 155 Poems A reflection is a distorted rendition of that which casts the reflection. A reflection is a mirrored image that defies the physics of its counterpart. A reflection is a chance to appreciate something, in a different light. I have previously released books 1 & 2 for my “From the Mind & Imagination of J.B. Frost” series, but something wasn’t right. As I looked back on the content, and the timing, I realized I had to assemble a better assortment of my poetry that would better appeal to the poetry market. This E-Book edition of “Poetry Reflections” contains many of my poems from my first two books, and several new ones that were originally slated to be in book #3 of my earlier-mentioned series. In my study of poets through the ages, I’ve learned that most had written things that never made it to print, or put out for public inspection and/or approval. I had taken a more daring road in my first two poetry ventures, and included just about everything I’ve written over the last few years. I wanted a collection that best mirrors the more positive messages I’ve written. I wanted a better representative of who I am as a writer, and as a person. I believe poetry is therapy, and I believe we all can benefit from its sessions. I hope you enjoy my work.

Palmer comes a brave and beautiful book for all who want to age reflectively, seeking new insights and life-giving ways to engage in the world. “Age itself,” he says, “is no excuse to wade in the shallows. It’s a reason to dive deep and take creative risks.” Looking back on eight decades of life—and on his work as a writer, teacher, and activist—Palmer explores what he’s learning about self and world, inviting readers to explore their own experience. In prose and poetry—and three downloadable songs written for the book by the gifted Carrie Newcomer—he meditates on the meanings of life, past, present, and future. Book excerpt: This is Diane deHaan's first poetry book. Reflections is the published collection of poems in a variety of genres. Poetry is the chiseled marble of language; it is a paint spattered canvas, but the poet uses words instead of paint. The poems in this book offer a reflection into the poet's soul. They touch on a myriad of themes that are common to all; whether it is through laughter, love, loss, or friendship, that is inspired by the canvas of our imagination. It is the author's desire that the reader will be able to identify with each expression from her heart, and to gain insight into their own soul from these poems through the reflections that are shared within the pages of her verses.

As with Echoes, the message is from the heart inspired by life, love, and whispers of yesterday. In contrast, it reflects an emotional journey through childhood days, recalling facets of family ties, camaraderie, and adversity. While some thoughts are fact and others fiction, the recollections are rooted in moments to evoke a personal emotion, set a purpose for tomorrow, and provide an insight for reflection. It is a means for sharing love, dreams, and inspirations to send a heart racing, free a heart of grief, or perhaps even offer a path for forgiveness. Open your mind and begin remembering . . .

Book Poetic Thinking Today

    Book Details:
  • Author : Amir Eshel
  • Publisher : Stanford University Press
  • Release : 2019-11-05
  • ISBN : 1503610527
  • Pages : 261 pages

Download or read book Poetic Thinking Today written by Amir Eshel and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2019-11-05 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thinking is much broader than what our science-obsessed, utilitarian culture often takes it to be. More than mere problem solving or the methodical comprehension of our personal and natural circumstances, thinking may take the form of a poem, a painting, a sculpture, a museum exhibition, or a documentary film. Exploring a variety of works by contemporary artists and writers who exemplify poetic thinking, this book draws our attention to one of the crucial affordances of this form of creative human insight and wisdom: its capacity to help protect and cultivate human freedom. All the contemporary works of art and literature that Poetic Thinking Today examines touch on our recent experiences with tyranny in culture and politics. They express the uninhibited thoughts and ideas of their creators even as they foster poetic thinking in us. In an era characterized by the global reemergence of authoritarian tendencies, Amir Eshel writes with the future of the humanities in mind. He urges the acknowledgment and cultivation of poetic thinking as a crucial component of our intellectual pursuits in general and of our educational systems more specifically.
