Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Shipbuilder: June, 1941 The Shipbuilder goes forth into an anxious world, a world concerned with problems of war and self-preservation. Our teachers and many of our alumni have already been called to help our country preserve democracy. If the theme of our year book seems light and inconsequential, it is not because we do not appreciate that it should be a time of deep reflection and thought. We hope that it may cheer the world a bit and send out a hope that war may keep away from our shores. Our class firmly believes in our motto, The More Prepared the More Powerful. May the knowledge that we have gained in Norwell High School prepare us for a future that will bring power to ourselves and our country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journeys With Our Lord: Reflections for the Holy Hour This small volume contains papers written each month for The Messenger of the Sacred H eart. The popularity of the series and the solicitation of many indulgent friends have again induced me to put them into permanent shape. They are intended for those who wish to form the habit of daily meditation and spiritual reading. Possibly devout souls may be aided by their use before and after Holy Communion. At times also they may serve as a companion in visits to the Blessed Sacra ment. It is hoped that the clergy may continue to obtain from these simple papers suggestions suitable for the ever-spreading devotion of the Holy Hour. Again it is a pleasure to acknowl edge my indebtedness to my unselfish confrere, Father Joseph H. Smith, s.j., whose revision has made this little book possible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Years and Late Reflections, Vol. 4 of 4 I new it a duty which I owe to the public and to myself, not to allow this fourth and last volume of my Early Years and Late Re ections to make its 'appearance without a preface explanatory of my motives for combining, so largely as I have done, severer cont emplations with the record of lighter matters. No one, now-a-days, can form any notion of the extent to which atheistical doctrines prevailed at the period of my entrance into life. The storm of the French Revolution was raging at its utmost inten sity, and all birds of ill omen were revelling in the tempest which had long been gathering over the Christian world. Book Zen Brain Reflections

    Book Details:
  • Author : James H. Austin
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 2010-09-24
  • ISBN : 0262260379
  • Pages : 615 pages

Download or read book Zen Brain Reflections written by James H. Austin and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2010-09-24 with total page 615 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sequel to the popular Zen and the Brain further explores pivotal points of intersection in Zen Buddhism, neuroscience, and consciousness, arriving at a new synthesis of information from both neuroscience research and Zen studies. This sequel to the widely read Zen and the Brain continues James Austin's explorations into the key interrelationships between Zen Buddhism and brain research. In Zen-Brain Reflections, Austin, a clinical neurologist, researcher, and Zen practitioner, examines the evolving psychological processes and brain changes associated with the path of long-range meditative training. Austin draws not only on the latest neuroscience research and new neuroimaging studies but also on Zen literature and his personal experience with alternate states of consciousness. Zen-Brain Reflections takes up where the earlier book left off. It addresses such questions as: how do placebos and acupuncture change the brain? Can neuroimaging studies localize the sites where our notions of self arise? How can the latest brain imaging methods monitor meditators more effectively? How do long years of meditative training plus brief enlightened states produce pivotal transformations in the physiology of the brain? In many chapters testable hypotheses suggest ways to correlate normal brain functions and meditative training with the phenomena of extraordinary states of consciousness. After briefly introducing the topic of Zen and describing recent research into meditation, Austin reviews the latest studies on the amygdala, frontotemporal interactions, and paralimbic extensions of the limbic system. He then explores different states of consciousness, both the early superficial absorptions and the later, major "peak experiences." This discussion begins with the states called kensho and satori and includes a fresh analysis of their several different expressions of "oneness." He points beyond the still more advanced states toward that rare ongoing stage of enlightenment that is manifest as "sage wisdom." Finally, with reference to a delayed "moonlight" phase of kensho, Austin envisions novel links between migraines and metaphors, moonlight and mysticism. The Zen perspective on the self and consciousness is an ancient one. Readers will discover how relevant Zen is to the neurosciences, and how each field can illuminate the other.

Book Reflections on the Aesthetic Experience

Download or read book Reflections on the Aesthetic Experience written by Gregorio Kohon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-08-20 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in the relationship between psychoanalysis and art - and other disciplines - is growing. In his new book Reflections on the Aesthetic: Psychoanalysis and the uncanny, Gregorio Kohon examines and reflects upon psychoanalytic understandings of estrangement, the Freudian notions of the uncanny and Nachträglichkeit, exploring how these are evoked in works of literature and art, and are present in our response to such works. Kohon provides close readings of and insights into the works of Franz Kafka, Jorge Luis Borges, Louise Bourgeois, Juan Muñoz, Anish Kapoor, Richard Serra, Edvard Munch, Kurt Schwitters, amongst others; the book also includes a chapter on the Warsaw Ghetto Monument and the counter-monument aesthetic movement in post-war Germany. Kohon shows how some works of art and literature represent something that otherwise eludes representation, and how psychoanalysis and the aesthetic share the task of making a representation of the unrepresentable. Reflections on the Aesthetic is not an exercise in "applied" psychoanalysis; psychoanalysis and art are considered by the author in their own terms, allowing a new understanding of the aesthetic to emerge. Kohon’s book makes compelling reading for psychoanalysts, psychotherapists, art therapists, literary and art critics, academics, students and all those interested in the matter of the aesthetic.
